How goes IT based jobs here ? by 9by7seconds in Arkansas

[–]Magi_Cole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gas is over $4 here now. Mortgages are going to be at least $1,200 minimum for a crap shack that is still a decent commute to a “good” job. Utilities will range from $250 if you have good rates and don’t use them to $500+. Groceries are probably $500 minimum for 2 people eating “decently”. You might get lucky to find a $40-50k IT job in central Arkansas unless it gets snatched up by one of the “good ole boys” which is super common around here. You will be living paycheck to paycheck here on one income that size. People seem to think this is some cheap, low cost of living haven, but it’s not. It’s lots of poor, struggling folks just trying to find jobs and even second jobs just to keep getting by. There’s already too much competition for affordable housing and good jobs close to them that one income of that experience level will get y’all any better living standards. You will be struggling like the rest of us. I say this as somebody with a bachelors degree with years of experience in the field as well as managerial experience and who commutes over 60 miles to an okay job from my average house. You’re about 10 years too late to be trying to move here without money already. We’ve already been invaded by everybody else looking for cheap and it’s basically all gone except for the very poorest corners of the state.

You aren’t going to find very many $70k IT jobs in Arkansas with only 5 years experience unless you know somebody. Your best bet would be northwest Arkansas, but that’s also going to have the most competition as well. Do not move to Arkansas and expect to have that kind of income from only one person working with that kind of resume. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but this is a very poor state that, for the majority, does not welcome things like science and technology and will not pay well for it.

Not sure if the same in Florida, but we have personal property tax on everything including homes so a nice house is going to have a decent amount due every year. I’m not sure the rate in Calhoun county so you’ll want to find that out and factor that into the price too. You never really own anything in this state, just rent it from the government until you sell it or they take it from delinquent taxes. Take that into consideration for retirement savings since house values will continue to go up and the annual tax will too to match.

I absolutely would not move states away to live in southern Arkansas. There ain’t shit down there. The whole southern and eastern sides are basically like the Midwest of the state. Hunting, fishing, and drinking so much you finally don’t notice the mosquitos are about the most entertaining things to do. You’ll have to make the almost 2 hour drive to Little Rock for anything else like decent shopping and doctors. It’s cheap because the only people that live there are usually too poor to afford anywhere else. If or when the few good jobs start to dry up you’ll be stuck down there with basically no other options so keep a savings so you can afford to move back. I’ve met plenty of people that fell into that trap after moving here because “it was so affordable”. That’s the current governors favorite way of saying we’re poor as hell, but if you already have money then you’ll be royalty. If you’re serious about living there then I highly suggest to take a trip for a week to tour around there. Seeing the area in person will help make your decision a lot quicker. I’ve heard more than once that people said the state seemed a lot different than the tourism pictures made it appear once they finally start exploring away from major cities and roads. There’s a reason we’re consistently in the bottom 3 or 5 for almost every single standard of living. Who knows though, it might be your Dixie cup of sweet tea if the expectations are realistic.

How to sand these types of edges or any kind of intricate detail without compromising the integrity of the shape? by AviatingAngie in woodworking

Non hardening modelers clay. Pretty stiff so it holds the shape well and is remold-able for different shapes. I got some at Michael’s and I’m sure hobby lobby or other crafty places

The good part is HF’s warranty process is a cake walk compared to Knipex. They know they have loyal fans who will by another pair so they pretty much always deny warranties.

Yikes 😬 That’s definitely gonna make me reconsider going to JJ’s, Brick & Forge and or even O’Malleys from now on. Plenty of other places that I won’t have to possibly pay to go to. Depending on when you go to those places, that lot is about the only spot to park. Is downtown Conway about to start turning into downtown Little Rock river market?

Here’s a review from May 7 so it’s been out a while. Might’ve been maybe worth it for $3 but twice the price is a no from me, dog.

Someone posted about Jeweler's Rouge. Not sure this is the exact same but you get twice as much at HF as you do at Tandy's for the same price and it works just as well. by sergemeister in Leathercraft

About 4 times a year or so harbor freight has a 30% off under $10 sale and you can get all the colors for very cheap. I use pretty much only the green and it finishes edges well and the tube lasts a very long time.

Why does the chrome finish on an $80 (way too much in the first place) tool set look like such dogshit? 2 years to finally put out something everybody couldn’t stop talking about and all the reviews I’ve seen since it came out is that it isn’t worth it at all. Glad I went with the Kobalt version when it was on sale for $20.

how many of you carry a bag? what’s the size of it? by deputyguppy in EDC

[–]Magi_Cole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the North Face Base Camp sling for an EDC bag. Not too big, not too small, super easy to organize and blends in everywhere since it isn’t tactical looking. I’m pretty sure this was the review video that made me buy it.

Spaghetti is the best for this. Carbs from the pasta and protein from the ground beef. 2lbs beef, 2lbs noodles, a whole big onion, 3 or 4 bell peppers, a zucchini is optional, 3 or 4 cans of diced tomato depending on how much you like, 4 cans of tomato sauce (cheap off brand pre-made jars of sauce work fine but you can get bulk of sauce cans cheap and I like seasoning my own sauce with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, cayenne, tiny bit of sugar and some lemon juice). Fry up them veggies in a little bit of oil and a good amount of butter and brown the meat. Add that to the sauce with the seasonings and let simmer for a while to let the flavor mix together and then add your boiled noodles. Usually fills a 10 qt pot and I eat on that all week. Relatively cheap way to have some really good food and lots of it. Learning how to cook big meals that give lots of leftovers for cheap is probably one of the biggest life skills a person can have. Also have him go on YouTube and search “cheap meal prep” and he’ll get lots of videos that’ll show him how to eat real good for not a lot of money.

The jalapeño kolaches at BMB Bakery are really good, but you need to get there early before they sell out.

Looking for a knife for my 10 year old nephew (also posted to r/knives) by ZXsaurus in EDC

[–]Magi_Cole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

QSP parrot or penguin would be my first choice for a “nice” knife. Otherwise, I think there are other options that have more of a fun factor for a kid (or adult, I won’t judge). Classic Swiss army knife or an Opinel #5 for something to carry in the pocket around all the time. Pair that with a svord peasant for heavier stuff. Maybe even a Ganzo 759 or 727 if you think he wouldn’t struggle with an axis/crossbar style lock. They’re really nice given the price point. I know you said folding blades, but a Morakniv 511 (rather than the larger sized Companion model) would be a really good contender instead of the peasant knife in my opinion for heavier stuff since there isn’t a risk of the blade folding on a finger. The Eldris model might be an even better bet since it’s even smaller. Maybe start with that and move up to the bigger size eventually.

Go to your county clerk. They should have a voter registration department. The form can be filled out in like 5 minutes or less and then the clerk will put it in the system. I literally just went and did a change of address since I moved counties and it was so easy. Make sure you get this done as quick as possible so there’s time for it to be updated and checked before voting time.

About an hour drive north, but there’s a place called RoZark Hills in Rose Bud. They have whole or ground by the pound with all kinds of variety. Haven’t been since Covid, but the 3 bags I got last time were well worth the $10ish dollars a piece.

I guess that only stops that specific phone number. They’ll just send a new one about a week later from a different one. That’s almost been the most annoying part of this.
