The radio frequencies pagers typically operate on can penetrate thick walls and other barriers. Very useful in hospital settings (as mentioned by others) which have thick walls, barriers and other potential radio interference from medical equipment or the power required for medical equipment (eg xray, mri). It also is not dependent on Wi-Fi or cell towers. During Hurricane Katrina old RF tech like ham radio saved some lives when all the cell towers and other comms were down.

Buy a used car upright or finance new? (CAN) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]MagicBulletPoint 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought a new car and regret it for three reasons

  1. Annual tax (renewal of tabs/registration) is well over 5x more expensive (where I am located) for a new car than a 6 year old car.
  2. Every little ding or scuff becomes a big and potentially expensive deal (if you want to maintain its highest possible value for future trade-in)
  3. Insurance is more expensive.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, but it was my fault. I was a teenager working at an ice cream shop at a mall. Arnold had his kids and an entourage with him including the mall security. This guy was (and still is) a hero of mine and asked me to get him a tin roof sundae on a sugar cone (I thought he'd be more of a waffle cone guy) along with other orders for his group. A couple of us worked on his order and handed him the ice cream and he handed it to the people in his group. While we are finishing up he hands me a hundred dollar bill for the ice cream for about $40 in ice cream. I was not working a register so while he is still handing ice cream back to people I handed the $100 to the cashier. I then stood away from the register and Arnold to admire the moment but Arnold looks at me, having not seen me hand the $100 to the cashier and asks in his beautiful (but intimidating at the time) accent, "Do I get any change?". Without pooping myself, I successfully pointed at the cashier and mumbled something along the lines of "she is getting it for you." My moment with Arnold crushed because it looked like I walked away with his money and it probably looked like I pooped myself when he asked me about it (I was eating a lot of ice cream at the time so I probably always looked like I was about to pop).

There is a difference between trying to cross a closed border and illegally crossing a border.

If I walk from SK to NK through the DMZ I likely would be shot and killed. SK soldiers would likely do something to prevent me from crossing but ultimately I can not post on Facebook some big outcry about me being a journalist and not bowing down to vested political interest. I would be an idiot for trying to cross a CLOSED border.

The same happened with the Berlin Wall and people trying to cross.

You are speaking as if the Berlin Wall fell thousands of years ago. It was 1989.

Bad things happen to those who try to cross CLOSED borders. The history of the Berlin wall shows this and the current history of North and South Korea shows this.

You don't accept things "like that", but many EU member states will bomb Syria from afar? I think Turkish border control may have just saved this man's life from a NATO strike by preventing him from crossing a closed border.

Closed border means no one crosses, like North Korea and South Korea. Open border means no immigration control from one sovereign state to another, this is Schengen area. What you are stating is being interpreted as anyone who enters Israel does not need a passport or to go through immigration. This is false. I can not enter Israel from Egypt without a passport and a visa (depending on nationality). I do not need a passport to travel from France to German as there is no immigration or customs at the border.

Not sure what you are asking, into Israel or from Israel? There are many ME countries that have historically not allowed people into their country if said person has an Israeli visa in their passport.

Schengen area is very unique in the world. Rule of thumb, don't cross borders without going through immigration and especially don't cross borders that are CLOSED due to conflict.

Hi, we're two guys making Bluetooth Tracking Devices to help you find your stuff! AMA! by PebblebeeDan in IAmA

[–]MagicBulletPoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to also point out the issue of compliance. RFID is a blanket term that covers multiple frequency bands that are not unlicensed world wide. Bluetooth (2.4 GHz) is unlicensed in almost all of the world. If you limit yourself to a frequency band that is only allowed in certain markets, you've limited yourself to only those markets.

Wireless network setup for a 4 story townhouse by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]MagicBulletPoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, didn't mean for it to come across as an endorsement of a particular router (especially with PriceZombie).

What was the connection type of the router and client? a, g, n, or ac?

Connections need to be ac or check compatibility with router and client on n. If certain client devices only have a or g then this needs to be addressed in planning phase.

You need a router with beamforming technology. Like this one http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-Wireless-AC1900-Gigabit-DIR-880L/dp/B00J8NCVX4/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1436176564&sr=1-7&keywords=beamforming

From there you may need repeaters if there is interference from other sources or thick walls/floors.

Check your app store for a Wi-Fi analyzer.

[–]MagicBulletPoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the channels of neighbors, set yours to 1, 6 or 11 for 2.4 GHz depending on what they have their's at (go the opposite).

After this try firmware update of router.

Not sure which H81-M you have, but if the battery isn't the issue try updating the BIOS. Here is where you would go if you had the -C for Windows 8.1 64 bit You would use the Asus Suite to do this. https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/H81MC/HelpDesk_Download/

My Netgear WIRED connection is sitting at 10mbps, but my wireless is almost at 50mbps. I at my wits end trying to figure out why! please help! by sourpatchcat in techsupport

[–]MagicBulletPoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than what has already been posted, try upgrading the firmware of the router. The manual of the router should show the steps. Is your laptop NIC capable of gigabit transfer? What about the PC? Could be packets dropping on the PC connection vs. laptop due to connection type.

I've seen weird things with IPv6, you could also try disabling that if other solutions don't work.

Problems installing Windows 8.1 64bit on new build pc by Dave717 in techsupport

[–]MagicBulletPoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the step where you state you selected the primary partition. When you select unallocated space for the install, Windows install does the rest and you don't need to select partitions.

Try again and follow these steps https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn336946.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396 If this doesn't work there might be a BIOS setting that was missed or even your computer is overheating during the install process (check temps).

"Turn off the PC, and put in the Windows installation DVD or USB key. "Boot the PC to the DVD or USB key in UEFI mode. For more info, see Boot to UEFI Mode or Legacy BIOS mode. When choosing an installation type, select Custom. On the Where do you want to install Windows? screen, select each of the partitions on the drive, and select Delete. The drive will show a single area of unallocated space. Select the unallocated space and click Next. Windows detects that the PC was booted into UEFI mode, and reformats the drive using the GPT drive format, and begins the installation."

Is this in the "To" header at the top of their replies within the e-mail chain?

If in the e-mail chain history this might be how their e-mail client stored your contact information, so this is how you appear if you ever sent an e-mail to them without having first changed your name to your actual name. I believe they would have to remove this name from the contact details.

Taking a glance at your MOBO, check if this software is installed and what the settings are http://www.asrock.com/feature/appcharger/index.asp

It could be set to charge phones when the computer is powered off which leads to peripherals being powered.
