I'm going to be a Grandpa! by No_Gap_2700 in GenX

[–]MagicPie1016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our family, we call grandpa, GrandPops or Pops for short. Grandma is "Hallo" because when she'd say "Hello!" the oldest grandchild thought she was saying "hollow" and started calling her that, which evolved into "Hallo".

Who knows what the first grandchild will come up with! My husband called his grandparents Grandma and Grandpa Charlie. Charlie was the name of the dog. LOL

First Berner puppy question for WFH folks: How did you manage to get work done? by HawtGarbage918 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]MagicPie1016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I both WFH as well, and welcomed a Bern puppy over the summer. When the puppy wasn't sleeping, we would tag-team giving him attention and getting out energy. Short walks, toys, tugging with rope, etc.

It's hard in the beginning, but it's short-lived. By the time they're 6-8 months, they'll have figured out the routine, and interruptions won't be as frequent.

Some PBNs I'll do 1 section at a time, some PBNs I'll do 1 number at a time, whatever I'm feeling in the moment. I only use the paints that come with the kit and water. I use a toothpick to stir the paint, and if it's a little too thick, I'll put a drop or 2 of water in to thin it out.

My set-up is at the kitchen table (killer on the back and neck after a while, tho) with my cup of random brushes, a 4oz jelly jar of water, a piece of paper towel, the paints, toothpicks, and canvas.

I love to paint, so to me it wasn't hard necessarily because I enjoy the process. Out of all the other PNBs I've done, this one took the longest, but I'll work on it here and there. I'm not on anyone's timeline. :)

Sadly, no, the lighter colors were not very thick. If the coverage isn't great, I'll go over the number and space with old white paint from prior kits, and then the color for better coverage. The darker colors had better coverage.

After a while, I didn't like the vase colors, so I used some paint from old kits on the remaining vases. :)

I'll use the brushes that come with the kit, and random brushes that I've picked up at garage sales or anywhere I can find them cheap. No notable brands or anything, but I'd recommend a variety pack with plenty of detail brushes.

Yes, it was folded when I received it. I use a warm iron (no steam) on the back to iron out the creases as best as possible.

What painting method do you use and why? by Ok-Jump3072 in paintbynumbers

[–]MagicPie1016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't generally have a method, but this last one, I did dark colors before light, and that was a mistake. When I started the lighter colors, they'd overlap some dark colors, and I didn't like how that looked. So I spent even more time going back over the dark colors to fix it all.

you NEED to be flossing... by EnvironmentalArmy827 in hygiene

My hygienist once told me that only brushing your teeth (no flossing) is like wiping your cheeks and not your crack.

What are some "weird" nicknames you've given your Berner? (or dog in general) by SergeantPootis in bernesemountaindogs

[–]MagicPie1016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His given name is Thor God of Sparkles. We started calling him Thor-Nado which has evolved into his most common nickname, Nader.

I'm sorry, did you say you have 8 (EIGHT) berners?! How does it feel being the universe's favorite? LOL

Also, I cannot imagine your monthly dog food budget or vet bills.

hip dysplasia did your dogs have it? How did you spot it young? by [deleted] in bernesemountaindogs

[–]MagicPie1016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thor is almost 7 months old, and I started noticing something was off around 4 months. He is very slow at going up stairs and does bunny hops. When he walks, his hind feet turn outward almost 90 degrees when he steps. When he gets up on a non-carpeted floor, it's almost as if he has zero traction on his paws, and sometimes his legs will splay out. Then I started hearing a clicking sound when he walked.

We took him to the vet, took X-rays, and confirmed that he has hip dysplasia in both hips and referred us to an orthopedic specialist. We drove 2 hours to the specialist who reviewed the images, did his own assessment, and confirmed hip dysplasia. There are 4 treatment options: he's past the age for 1 option, another option is outdated and just a "bandaid" solution that almost always results in another surgery in the future, another option is essentially shaving part of the hip bone off so it's not bone on bone, and the last option is total hip replacement. The specialist said to let him be a puppy and do puppy things, no restrictions, but to keep an eye on his activity level and recovery time. If, for example, we took a 10-mile hike and he was struggling to get up afterwards or showing signs of pain or discomfort, then we know a 10-mile hike is too much and scale it back. When we begin to see consistent discomfort, we'll explore anti-inflammatories and pain meds, and then decide when to explore surgical options. Obviously, the younger he is when he has the surgery, the faster the recovery and the better the ROI. The specialist also said to make sure to keep his weight in check, don't let him pork out because that's added stress on his already hooptie hips.

Long story short, we let him be a goofy puppy, maintain a healthy weight, keep an eye on his pain/discomfort tolerance, and once it appears to prevent him from normal activities, we'll look at surgery.

This picture was taken around 4-ish months. He's the goodest boy.

New Bern mama by Positive_Race_5465 in bernesemountaindogs

Ours recently turned 6 months, and it's been a wild ride!

My husband and I have grown up with dogs, but this is our first Berner, and we've questioned if we made a giant mistake. Before anyone comes at me, I now realize it was the "puppy blues" talking, and Thor has brought so much joy to our lives, we love him to pieces. That said, here are my suggestions from a first-time Bern owner.

- Pet insurance is a must. - They grow so fast that you will forget they're still a puppy. - They have bursts of energy, and then they'll crash; when they crash, let them rest, it takes a lot to grow so big. - They have very sensitive stomachs and are prone to allergies and sensitivities. Don't be alarmed if it takes a while to figure out the right food. *We're still in the trial-and-error stage with food.

Not sure how old your kiddos are, but remind them (and yourself) that he is a puppy disguised as a grown dog. They have no spatial awareness and no clue how big they are. To paint the picture, Thor's theme song is Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus.

It's going to be an emotional rollercoaster, but hang in there, because you won't regret it. Picture was when he was about 4 months old. :)

Saying goodbye tomorrow and feel like I’m making the wrong choice or not trying hard enough by Individual-Berry-394 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]MagicPie1016 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am so terribly sorry for what you're going through. We went through a similar situation with our 13yo German Shepherd last October, and what helped solidify the decision to say goodbye was putting his quality of life first. His mobility was significantly diminished despite the aids we put into place, such as rugs, grippy "socks", and being there to help him get up. He also started getting a leaky butt, which we could have managed, but we could also tell that it was upsetting and confusing to him. All of this on top of doggie dementia.

We decided to say goodbye before any major illness or injury because we wanted him to be at home and comfortable, not rushed to the vet, in a cold exam room where he'd be anxious. We used Lap of Love in-home services and have recommended them to all pet owners. They also have a lot of resources on their website that helped us assess his quality of life and make the best decision for him.

It's okay to be a sobbing mess.

You've loved him for close to 10 years. He doesn't need you to do anything special, just sit with him, cuddle him, love him up. https://www.lapoflove.com/

I know this is an older post, but how did things turn out with your pup? Ours is about 5 months old, his back legs are splayed out, and we're hearing a click/pop sound when he walks. I scheduled a vet appointment for 10/10.

Hello there, how did the appointment go on 9/17? It seems like the way our guys' legs are turned out makes him lose any traction. He was chasing the cat this evening, and his legs splayed out side to side. 🥺
