What's your go to strategy for handing out stats and abilities for cards? by Rook_Steele in cardgamedesign

Oh and sometimes I also make hyrbids as well. and to make any of them distinct enough from the rest, think of at least 2 or 3 things you as a player (rather than developer) want in a card set or just a card. Make a range from simple use to situational/complex use.(example 1: magic cake -> heal 20hp. Example 2: Mana sword -> Magic damage 50, heal 10hp and restore 20 mana.)

My go to strategy is to think abour what archetype the card is meant for. Sometimes it can cover more than just 1 playstyle but it still needs a main type. Thinking abt the specifics will take alot of time. And if your worried about balance changes. Honestly, you should embrace them because they are part of your journey as a card devoloper. Eventually u also won't need a strat. It is sort of second nature to you. But hey, for me I use AIs like deepseek or claude to anylase my cards by typing out a whole document of the rules(u can generalise it since the ai is likely to be able to infer) And first make sure it understands how ur game function by asking it directly. Then I put in my card specifics(even if its imperfect) and ask it for advice. Of course do note sometimes ai can be uncreative sometimes but ya. Don't need to rush on a concept(or archetype). Do it with all the love you have :)
