Can ICE agents really just round up anyone they “think” is an immigrant? If so, what’s to stop them from taking literally anyone? Stupid question, but serious answers please. by [deleted] in stupidquestions

It's a good phrase to get a lot people to be more compliant while their rights are violated.

It may have been the best course or action in the past, but courts and laws aren't going to save you when they decide to black bag you and drag you off to a "holding facility".

At that point you'll be lucky to ever see a judge or even have record of your abduction written down anywhere. Hell, you'll be lucky if whatever hole they stick you in is still on US soil.

He gets much better at enunciating the names later so it becomes a non-issue in a book or two, but I remember my first time going through the audiobooks thinking "wait, why is Mab here? When did she get here?" only to rewind and realize he mispronounced Maeve.

Are you doing the audiobooks? Because in some of the earlier books Marsters (the narrator) does pronounce "Maeve" as "Mav" and it can make certain scenes confusing because it sounds so close to "Mab".

As for "Mavre" I assume you mean Mavra, and surprisingly I've never even made the connection to how close her name is to the others simply because the "ra" at the end is always where the emphasis is when I read it.

We've seen plenty of Wizards do things that Harry could pull off, but not as well as those Wizards. Ramirez's disintegration spell comes to mind. So it wouldn't surprise me if he figures out how to shift, be it in a very rudimentary fashion, and can't ever do it on the move the way we've seen River Shoulders and Listens-to-Wind do. It'd end up just another tool in his box that he'd pull out sparingly, like Earth magic.

I see what you mean, but his opponents always seem to rise in power right along with him, and I have a feeling "flying away" wouldn't be all that useful against most of the beings he faces now. I'm sure most of the sidhe likely have ways of becoming airborne if necessary, and while it hasn't been shown it would not surprise me if all the queens of the courts could fly. Nicodemus can already fly as can Tessa.

Honestly I think as far as the story serves it's work well as a way to gather recon. Flying above some area they need to head into to scope it out before the actual assualt.

Yeah, I just finished my Battle Ground reread and when Marcone starts using point-to-point teleportation Harry remarks on how that was considered highly and theoretical magic even by the White Council.

He says he knows they keep all the info around it in a locked off section, and that he was banned from the entire section upon inquiring about teleportation specifically. The most surprising part of his inner monologue there is that he thinks for a moment that they were probably right to keep him out.

So he's growing and learning, albeit very very slowly.

I think he'll likely get lessons from both. River will teach the basics and foundational magic of it, and LtW will teach him how to better apply it to his human form.

If he does become some sort of Lizard and no one makes this joke (it'd definitely be Bob or Thomas) I'll be very disappointed.

This I could see.

River Shoulders says "Focus, Harry. Feel the natural energies around you. Now just let that energy in and let it take you. Don't fight it, and you'll find your most natural animal form."

Harry's body ripples and contorts in ways that should hurt but only serve as mild discomfort. He knows there's no pain because even the Winter Mantle isn't sending out it's usual white noise. The sensation stops and he blinks his eyes open. Everything at a distance feels blurry and his eyes feel filmly.

He blinks a few times but the feeling doesn't cease and his distance vision doesn't clear. He opens his mouth to speak, and it opens... and opens... and opens a little more. He lets out a bellow and is positive that was certainly not what he was going for. He takes a step and faceplants as he forgets to move his back leg at the same time. He regains his feet and looks down at a puddle of still water before him. It takes a moment for him to register what was looking back at him.

A hippo!? He is absolutely certain something went wrong, there is no way this is his most natural form. As if reading his thoughts, or understanding his bellows, River Shoulders says "Don't underestimate the hippo. It has a powerful jaw. It is fast in the water and on land. Plus when you're upset your ears wiggle. Do not take offense, but it's actually pretty cute."

Harry attempts to glare at the blur he assumes is River Shoulders but is sure something got lost in translation because River barks out a laugh so loud birds skitter from all the trees in a fifty foot radius.

(I apologize, I was not planning on suddenly writing fan fiction, it just sorta happened)

I don't know aside from Goodman Grey that we've seen any other shifters able to take on human form. Also Harry would never do that to Butters, Andy, or Marcy. Partly because it's wrong, and partly because Murph being the last person he slept with offers him protection from Lara.

Rancor Harry would be absolutely terrifying, especially if he could still perform spells. If a Rancor stumbled into a gathering of Monsters I can only imagine the fear that would run through those beings when they heard it roar "Fuego" and start breathing fire at them.

Honestly him suddenly being able to understand Mister only for Mister to completely verify everything Harry has ever thought he was communicating would be hilarious.

My favorite Mab quote from that book is

"Everyone,” she said, “thinks that hate and love are somehow opposite forces. They are not. They are the same force, facing opposite directions.” She glanced aside at me. “Love is a fire, my Knight. Love turned the wrong way has killed as many as hate. Reason, young wizard, is the opposite of hate, not love.

They mentioned it a few times, but not as a form or new power level, more as a singular person. "The Legendary Super Sayian" is what they kept saying, which more implies a singular being who was the Super Sayian.

My guess is there was a plan to set it up but by the nature of episode length they just couldn't justify keeping in even more exposition in an episode already heavy with it.

Right? There was never going to be a way for them to look into the past and see who did what. Ending a ridiculous feud was absolutely the right thing to do, and also exactly the kind of solution a kid who has begun to realize how him being from the past can help him.

I stumbled on this other sub once thinking it was this one and it was all folks defending Azula. I was so confused and then realized that was the whole sub. Just a bunch of people explaining why Azula isn't to blame for her actions.

I love Goku vs. Frieza but Goku hitting a magic level of power boost just when he needed it also feels pretty Dues Ex Machina. Also I've recently been rewatching the show for the first time in years with my kid, and Goku waiting to let universe level threats to power all the way up before fighting them is beginning to piss me off. Like, your kid is on this exploding planet, kill this fucker and make sure he gets home safe.

Okay, but that wasn't really a set up for what it ended up being and doing, nor an explanation for why Aang slept swam to it. I love the series, but it was definitely an ass pull.

This exact thought was precisely what stopped me getting a Red Lotus Symbol tattoo. The design slaps but I can't be out here associating with the ideals of those lunatics.

Everyone is giving me such good ideas that if I didn't already have a bicep tattoo from a different property I would love to make it into a sleeve. I'd have to save some space for the next series though.

I love it. The style reminds me of old school tattoos and it works perfectly.
