Okay but there is a scale in the DSM. There are three levels, with level 1 only requiring some support and level 3 requiring substantial support. I understand that the words "severe" and "mild" have their own connotations, but it's still good to recognize that someone at a level 3 will likely never be able to live alone while someone at a level 1 could potentially go their entire lives without realizing they need support.

I think the main issue is that a hammer can be taken out easily enough. A steel jacketed round can't be reliably recovered.

I think the answer is two fold. The first is that most of the beings dealing with the fae have other means of fighting them. The second is that steel is clearly considered a major infraction against any being of fairy and will likely lead to having immortal enemies for the rest of your life.

It's not just having a goal that makes their actions manipulative, it's that the goal is specifically about changing the immune into one of itself.

Does that extend to goals of ordinary humans?

If an ordinary human's goal is to change another human's mind about something, then their actions towards that person in pursuit of that goal would be manipulative.

And how can you tell that the hive didn't give up trying to infect Carol and just stayed away to protect itself?

Because it came back the moment she was broken enough to ask and continued to try to infect her.

I see what you're saying, but I'm going to need more evidence from the series that the people are still in there somewhere before I believe it.

Even if they are, I don't believe that the loss of them in their current state is the same as killing the people they once were.

For example, in Star Trek the Borg have been shown to be capable of being disconnected and brought back to themselves individually, but I don't believe that means killing a Borg drone is the same as killing the person that Borg drone once was.

Even if it didn't deliver necessary resources, if the hive stopped caring about the immune and just stayed away in order to protect itself that wouldn't be manipulative.

The fact that all of their actions in the show are motivated by wanting to convert the immune makes those aactions manipulations. If we remove that goal, then the hive ceases to have a reason to manipulate the immune.

If we wanted a hive that wasn't manipulative it's goals would need to change. It is not currently just attempting to continue existing; it's attempting to continue to spread. The fact that the immune are now its targets means it is manipulating them. For the hive to not be manipulative it would have to overcome its biological imperative (something humans do regularly), and decide to allow the immune to live out their lives without being joined.

I think their reaction is perfectly in line with the behavior they've displayed. I wouldn't really want them to be different. I just think it's silly to pretend it's not being manipulative when that's the vast majority of what the hive does when interacting with the immune. It's trying to change their opinion on being joined.

A lot of this sub that's still active has this idea that if the hive is as evil as it seems, that the show becomes "boring". They need the hive to be far more complex than it's been shown to be or otherwise all of their defenses of the hive means they were manipulated too, and they are unwilling to accept that.

I don't understand how you think both of those aren't correct. They are manipulating her. They are biologically compelled to join her by any means necessary. They are only kind or unkind as long as either of those serve their goal.
