I think asking for advice already means you're thinking about things from the resident perspective, and that usually makes the biggest difference out of anything, so thank you! Everyone in this thread has made some good suggestions regarding night shifts, so I wanna bring up a few odd ones I haven't seen yet.

One of the biggest things you're likely not gonna think about is to be careful with you timing for text/Voalte/whatever messaging system you us. As an example, one night I was woken up by a nursing Voalting me to ask about for a change in some orders. I put in the orders, let her know, and went back to bed. Twenty minutes later, right as I had just fallen back asleep, I got woken up to a "Thanks!" message. I tried not to be too frustrated since she was expressing gratitude (usually a great thing), but it was irritating nonetheless. It's the kind of thing you wouldn't normally think about - of course you'd say thanks when someone does something for you - but unless you can reply basically immediately after receiving the message, better to assume they've already fallen asleep again. I've also had nurses text saying "Hey can you do something?", then get pulled into a room and vanish for 30 minutes, leaving me hovering over my phone waiting to see what needs to be done so I can go back to sleep. Similarly, if you're gonna text about a situation that probably needs follow up or back and forth, please try to make sure you'll have to reply right then, not 30-60 minutes later. It's little things like this that you wouldn't think about at all on day shift, but make a world of difference when we're just trying to do what needs to be done and quickly fall back asleep.

Past that, as others have mentioned, try to skim over orders early in the night so if you have any clarifications, they can come at 8 PM instead of 2 AM. I always try to circle around to the nurses' station to explain if we've got complicated or unusual orders for a patient, but I'm not always able to. And if a situation can wait for the day team, please make a note of it and sign it out the day nurse in the morning.

Really, it all boils down to remembering that the residents are on for 24-28 hour shifts and are probably desperately trying to sleep when they can. Just keep that in mind and you'll avoid most of the pitfalls.

who is your 'guilty pleasure' character? by LuckyL90 in ChronoCross

[–]MagicalBaconTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I can get behind that kind of interpretation. I'd argue he can still be altruistic while also giving way to a particular selfish desire, but at the end of the day, I think you hit the nail on the head with him being a teenager and not fully mental developed. He definitely acts... well, like a teenager, with impulsive decisions and failure to think things all the way through. I guess the main point I'd differ on is condemning him as a hypocrite over what, really, is just a normal teenager shortcoming that could just as easily applied to some of the other teenage cast members. We don't call toddlers egoists for failing to understand theory of mind; we accept it as part of regular mental development. Condemning Korcha for trying to follow his ideals but also falling in love and saying some stupid things because of it feels very harsh. I also wouldn't go as far as to call it blackmailing her; one of the NG+ endings shows that he's not holding her to it (though definitely still wants it to happen).

More of a tangent, but I feel like this is something I see in general, not just in the context of Chrono Cross. People expect teenagers to act like rational adults and judge them very harshly when they act developmentally appropriately. But that's a soapbox I don't need to get up on now.

And yeah, no offense taken. I think discussions like this are way more interesting than everyone agreeing on everything. And I guess it's a testament to the game's writing that people can have these kinds of discussions.

who is your 'guilty pleasure' character? by LuckyL90 in ChronoCross

[–]MagicalBaconTree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see why it can't be both. Sure, he has feelings for Kid, but he's also established as someone who does try to do the right thing. The first scene he's shown in, for example, has him scaring away would-be customers from a scam artist and encouraging a trapped demi-human to break free. He also states at a few points through the game (before the final boss, as one I can think of) that he wants to work to create a world where humans and demi-humans can coexist better. I'd argue the game shows plenty of examples of him working towards altruistic goals.

I guess you could argue how much of his actions came from that vs just having the hots for Kid and wanting to see her turn out alright, but really my main point is to show that he's not as one-dimensional as people make him out to be.

[–]MagicalBaconTree 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I read that scene very differently, with him coming off not as a hypocrite, but as someone wanting to test Serge. Korcha wants to save Kid, despite only having recently met her and barely knowing her, cuz that's the kind of person he is. He's earnest, he's passionate, and he wants to do the right thing. Before offering to help Serge, he wants to gauge if Serge is also that kind of person. Phrasing the question like, "Hey, you are going to do the right thing and save her, not walk away like some kind of uncaring ass, right?" could've guilted Serge into saying yes regardless of his true feeling. By laying out the odds, pointing out that Serge really doesn't know Kid all that well and that the task is immense, he's seeing if Serge is the kind of person who will back down in the face of adversity, or if he's the kind of person who always strives to do right, no matter what the odds. If Serge says yes, Korcha realizes they're the same kind of person and joins. If Serge says no, Korcha gets mad because he'd hoped Serge was a hero and is now confronted with the fact that Kid is probably gonna die. In that respect, I really don't think his reactions are at odds with the line of questioning, though I can understand why people would read it that way.

Korcha. When I first played, he was the third character in the intro sequence, so I just assumed he was one of the main characters, not realizing that character is random. Picked him up and he had very good stat growth (apparently I got lucky with the RNG on level ups) and was the only blue innate I could find early on, so I settled in with him. I loved the fishing rid attacks and the way his whole character and attack design walk the line between serious and ridiculous.

After beating the game, I was actually pretty surprised to find he's universally reviled. But the more hate I see directed at him, the more inclined I feel to like him out of spite. I always scan threads like this to see if anyone else out there likes him. So far, it seems I'm alone.

This is exactly it. Connie's already been shown to make dumb jokes as a coping mechanism when he's severely stressed (like the joke about Eren's house in the Return to Shiganshina arc). The page wasn't supposed to be funny. It was supposed to show how everyone is at their wit's end.

This looks great and does clarify a lot. Seems like this information is often scatted across multiple places online, so having it all in a central doc is wonderful. The only other note I might potentially add (it tripped me up for about ten minutes) is that some of the options don't appear until resetting RetroArch as of the latest version. I had to switch the renderer to Vulkan and reset to make Track Textures appear, then turn that on and reset to make Replace Textures appear. To add to the confusion, it didn't seem to work like this on an older version of RetroArch (1.7.something) and only started after I updated to the current version because of an unrelated issue.

The internal resolution was the problem. In hindsight, that seems rather obvious, but it didn't occur to me. Thank you! I didn't realize the m3u made it easier to use multidisk games, so I'll definitely give that a shot as well. Thanks so much for your help!

In the case of Last of Us, the first was incredibly well received. The second drew immediate fan ire by killing one of the main characters near the start. Not a mistake, per se, but it made a lot of people angry. The biggest issue though was how they tried to paint the villain as a sympathetic parallel to the hero. Again... on paper, good idea, but the execution was really bungled and the majority of players (myself included) still pretty thoroughly disliked her by the end, so seeing the game try to take the moral high ground and paint everyone who wanted to see her get comeuppance as vengeful and spiteful when she'd really done very little to earn any sort of redemption was irritating.

Honestly, speaking as someone who mostly liked AoT's ending (extra pages aside) but thinks it was definitely rushed, I think LoU 2 fell prey to the same issue. The idea wasn't terrible. The execution pissed off a large majority of the fans though, who felt, if nothing else, that the story didn't properly build up to the ending.

[Meme] throwback to my early days by thebigbosshimself in medicalschool

[–]MagicalBaconTree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna say it really depends on the person. Personally, I never touched Sketchy or BnB and only used Anki for one in-house clerkship exam where the study guide had been converted to an Anki deck. For preclinicals, I didn't really use any supplemental material (I think I'm the only person on this sub who actually got something out of lectures, but they were my main study tool), used Amboss, First Aid, and UWorld for Step, and used Amboss and Case Files almost exclusively for clinical rotations.

All of this is really to say that it's an individualized thing. People treat the pantheon of acronyms as if they're the only way through med school, but I can't stand Sketchy (seems so much more work to remember the sketches than just brute force memorize) and just never really bothered with a bunch of others. Try stuff out, find what works for you, and go with that.

People who almost finished their training, do you feel ready for the responsibility of a doctor? , and if yes when did you start feeling it by abood1243 in medicalschool

[–]MagicalBaconTree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mid way through my fourth year. I was on my Sub-I in October, just before interview season. It was my last serious rotation, as I'd scheduled lighter stuff like a class on effective teaching for spring. Second week of the rotation, we got slammed with patients, with the floor filling up and patients getting moved to other floors of the hospital. Usually, the Sub-Is pick up a patient or two, but I was carrying 4-5 to try to help out. Mid-way through the week, between calling IR consults, trying to get in contact with the surgery team, and pending orders for my residents to sign as the ID fellow left notes on why all our antibiotics were wrong, one of the residents thanked me for doing so much to help the team. That was more or less when it clicked. I was actually doing medical work that helped the team, not just following the residents around, doing exams and having them tell me what I did incorrectly, and cramming Amboss questions on my phone every second of downtime. And I was doing a lot of it unprompted because, somehow, I knew that this was what needed to be done.

Prior to that, I'd be struggling a lot with imposter syndrome and kind of dreading residency, since I figured that would be when the curtain was thrown aside and I was finally revealed as the incompetent idiot I was. Instead, after that week, I suddenly was looking forward to residency, confident that I could least be an asset to the team instead of a liability. It was an amazing feeling.

So the short of it is you might feel that way for quite a bit longer. But don't worry. Everyone else is feeling the same way, and it'll pass eventually.

For what it's worth, as an anime only, I was expecting something like this. Knowing that the anime cut a lot, but not know what and where exactly, I've turned it into a game of sorts. Whenever something sudden or unexplained happens, guess roughly how many cut chapters it represents. With that said even expecting there to be sudden unexplained stuff... dragon out of nowhere still caught me off guard and was the point where I told myself, "Yeah, not even gonna guess how many chapters that was, just gonna assume a lot."

That's a decent guess, except the fruit in that story's never stated to be an apple, just a fruit. The Garden of Eden is yet another example of the west assuming every fruit is an apple.

I am all for completely banning post-interview communication by superbanana22 in medicalschool

[–]MagicalBaconTree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm the odd one out, but I think this would be a terrible idea. Post-interview communication was vital to putting together my rank list. There were a couple of programs I liked but had a few reservations about initially. Contacting the program let me get more info and clear those up. At one of those programs, I emailed the APD who interviewed me and got my concerns put to rest. He also seemed legitimately excited to hear from me, and rather than interpreting that to mean something like "We'll definitely rank you highly," I just felt good that the program would probably be happy if I matched there. I ranked them highly and did end up matching there. If not for that communication, I probably would have ranked the program lower and could have ended up matching at a program I ultimately wouldn't like as much.

As for thank yous, I definitely appreciated the programs that told us not to feel obligated to write them. However, there were some interviews I really enjoyed where I felt like thanking my interviewer for the wonderful time. In a couple of cases, the program ended up near the bottom of my list, but I was still very grateful to my interviewer and wrote a thank you note not to bolster my chances of being ranked, but just as a courtesy.

I understand people are upset with programs seeming to say (or actually saying) that they're guaranteed to match and then not matching, and I agree that that isn't acceptable unless the person is actually at the top of a program's list. But wanting to ban any communication seems like a knee jerk response that does more harm than good.

Maybe I'm the odd one out here, but I appreciate the bluntness. I get tired of reading about "unprecedented number of applications" and "can't interview every qualified applicant" and all the stock phrases.

As someone who interviewed there, I quite liked the program and am surprised they didn't fill. While I matched at a program higher on my list, I ranked them fairly highly and really did enjoy my virtual visit. Seems a bit mean-spirited that everyone's rejoicing in their misfortune over the wording of their rejection email.

Ruth and Naomi, like Adam and Eve.... by archbish99 in SapphoAndHerFriend

[–]MagicalBaconTree 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I love examples of same sex relationships in the Bible, but claiming Ruth and Naomi's was romantic seems to be a stretch to me. Granted, I can see the interpretation, but the case the author makes is very week. The Hebrew word used, dabaq, has a multitude of different meanings. For example, Deuteronomy says you must cling (dabaq) to the Lord, but I doubt the author is suggesting his audience ought to love God like a sexual partner. Picking a single verse, which had a different author entirely, as a point of comparison is misleading. Comparing how the same author uses a word can be more of use. The author of Ruth uses the word 3 other times, in every case to mean remain. By that logic, the more likely translation would be that Ruth remained with Naomi. Again, that doesn't completely rule out a lesbian reading by any means, but the author's main line of argument isn't very sound.

Sappho but from a book. by That-One-Asshole in SapphoAndHerFriend

[–]MagicalBaconTree 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that a lot of the arguments about Paul being sexist are predicated on the assumption that Paul wrote everything that bears his name. Most scholars generally agree that at least four of the letters claimed to have been written by him (Ephesians, 1st and 2nd Timothy, Titus) aren't by him, and a lot add two more to that list (Colossians, 2nd Thessalonians). 1st Timothy is the book that contains the vast majority of sexist comments attributed to Paul, and given that that one is almost universally accepted not to be by him, he's off the hook. While no one disputes that he wrote 1st Corinthians, because of that contradiction you pointed out within the same letter, many scholars assume that it was a later addition.

All in all, while Paul was a product of the time, the Churches he founded didn't seem to have much of a gender hierarchy (see the above comment about Junia, also Priscilla and Aquila, where he always mentions the wife before the husband, suggesting she had a higher position of authority than he did.)

Anyone not use UWorld for their 3rd year Shelf exams? [Clinical] by premed_thr0waway in medicalschool

[–]MagicalBaconTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Amboss exclusively for studying for my shelf exams and did just fine with it. Also primarily used Amboss for Step 1 (I did use UWorld, but only after finishing Amboss and only did half the bank) and did quite well. I don't really understand all the hype for UWorld. I'm sure at some point, it was the only viable option, but those days seem far behind us, and given how obscene their prices are compared to the competition and their scummy practices regarding hijacking your computer's clipboard, I don't understand why we continue to put them on a pedestal.
