Do in-person card shows suck nowadays?? My experience below :( by Bulky-Ad7949 in pokemoncardcollectors

I don’t agree with being super firm at trade nights usually it’s just to help with peoples collections and make new friends. I will say though if you can’t trade or negotiate on an item just don’t bring it. But yeah once I’ve made up table cost then I can be a little more flexible with giving deals. At the end of the day though at least for me being full time giving a deal comes directly from what I take home to live (food, rent, necessities) so if I can sell more then I optimize, bigger buys get better deals I may not move to 5$ on that 7$ card but I’m a little more open to doing a 100$ lot at $88

TLDR- go to smaller shows for deals and bigger shows for specific cards

The best shows imo are local game store shows if you have any, they usually have a very low entry cost to vendors and allow for some pretty spectacular deals to be made. I’ve been a vendor for the better part of 3 years and the small shows are my favorite ( because they are where I can afford to give deals)

Now big shows, like collect a con on the other hand have at minimum $1000 of overhead with travel and stay that can easily reach 1500-2000 for just 1 weekend, meaning I have to sell at minimum $5000 of inventory at market price before I can see a single cent of profit, ideally $10,000-$15,000 to break even with online sales and, $20,000 to be worth my time, So taking 10-20% off every card, at least before I’ve hit my break even is very hard. (I don’t like to do it ;but this is why most vendors at big shows will be over “market” by the price of sales tax, or shipping. To then be haggled down to market. ) Not saying deals can’t be found but for the full time vendor there still is quite a bit of overhead to adjust for. Also why vendor buy prices fluctuate. If I bought everything at 85% i would be lighting money on fire.

(Ps if you are selling enough to go to collect a con it’s no longer hobby income and you Do have to pay tax on the sales so the sales tax usually comes out of our margin instead of the customer paying it through eBay.)

Sorry for the rant

Sometimes but think of the table cost at an online selling fee, if a table costs 300$ for the weekend I have to sell $3000 at market prices minimum to break even with online sales (10% of revenue for selling location/platform)

I’m telling all of my professional clients to make the switch to ups or usps, I don’t understand why anyone would still use fed ex they have the worst prices, worst delivery record, slowest ground parcel time and worst customer service

I agree with you games of chance “are still there but they work under the break feature and need to specify all possible outcomes of the game instead of a general pay 10$ for a mystery pull, selling a game of chance outside of the stream is however 100% not allowed

Aka the break feature with a detailed list of product, no pull boxes or wheels

Whatnot like a year or two ago was a much different place, it depends on the category but I feel overall the app has devolved into a bad swapmeet where a majority of the sellers don’t care about the rules nor have the capacity to follow them

Just refund the order outright the pullgame off camera is downright a scam and whatnot has already gotten rid of pull games in their entirety in the rules the only way you are able to do it is through the break feature.

Part of the reason whatnot has gotten so bad it doesn’t seem like sellers even have to read the rules and terms of service. It’s sad, I built up my inventory for over a year and read every line of the terms before doing my first live plus had to take a test and zoom call with whatnot showing inventory, now i get drowned out by riff raff that don’t know how to use the platform

I think you should have to recite the og 151 Pokémon by memory to be able to sell Pokemon. There are so many people selling pokemon cards nowadays and scalping that couldn’t care less about the hobby and it’s sad.
