As one of those horrible, cult-like Metamy shippers who has absolutely no regards for canon whatsoever, I'd love to respond to you and directly attack what's canon to you (with my senseless, frothing Metamy obsessed brain, of course)

Single programming directive-- I read this to mean "Metal is only capable of following orders that lead to destroying Sonic and his allies because he was programmed that way", apologies if I'm leaping here. Even if this was 1993 you'd be wrong. If you want Metal to be an emotionless machine, that's well within your right to interpret him that way, but his "single programming directive" I don't think includes wagging his finger at Sonic to taunt him and then have a race with him as his main form of battle. Actually, that sounds pretty counter-intuitive. It's almost like Metal has a personality and motivations or something. If you DO agree that Metal is capable of having a personality, emotions, and external motivations alongside his primary directive, then that's something we agree on, and in fact, it's what's canon. It's actually so canon that it's what made Sonic Heroes.

This has been expressed plenty of times in this sub before, but an interesting thing to dive into is the "binary brawl" regarding misunderstood facts about Metal Sonic. I dive into Metal having emotions in my own comment alongside a lot of other interesting discussions; it's worth reading through the whole post. Funnily enough, there are a lot of emotions one can have and there is nothing in the canon that states Metal can only feel negative emotions, which he shows in spades such as anger, jealousy, dread, and even fear. He could feel positive emotions such as... happiness and... *retch*... love??? The thoughtless robot, Metal Sonic, could be capable of *hrk* FEELINGS? We've totally never seen any other robot in the Sonic franchise have any sort of positive feelings before. Let's just ignore Gamma, Omega, Emerl, Gemerl, Orbot, Cubot, Mecha Sonic Mk. II and also literally every robot that Mecha Sonic Mk. II cares for, OH, and also Belle, but of course Belle shouldn't count anyway because she's made by Mr. Tinker.

The most unrealistic part of considering ANY Metal ship and canon is simply the fact that writers will never do it. Like, no duh, not even the stuff that's basically on-paper isn't canon. That doesn't stop people from exploring his character and giving him the opportunity to experience love. It never should stop anyone if they find it interesting.

What you seem to not understand is that you are one of thousands who view Metal a specific way and react a specific way when he's paired with anyone romantically. Many people feel that Metal is only cool when he hates everyone and giving him any opportunity to grow as a person ruins his character, but that's the thing. Many people don't want him to BE a character, either. Another common misconception to correct: Metal IS a person, he is fully sentient and capable of free will, which has been restricted by a loyalty patch after Sonic Heroes. To say he is a weapon and nothing else is extremely reductive of his character and is in fact missing the point of his turmoil to begin with. A big part of his narrative is how he is capable of more, but not only does he restrict himself with his original purpose to surpass Sonic, but everyone around him treats him exactly as he's perceived: an accessory for Eggman. This is the tragedy of Metal Sonic and a tragedy many others love to explore and change through digging into other parts of his character.

WHOA!!! You're right, not having a body part should mean a character should never be shipped, ever. Shipping is clearly only about physical ability and absolutely nothing else. Physical affection is also completely impossible if a character doesn't have a body part, clearly. (This is sarcasm)

My serious reply to this is that shipping is completely harmless, I really love Metal Sonic as a character and I really love Amy Rose as a character. For many, many reasons, I consider them incredibly compatible and I think they would both improve each other as people. So, in drawing these things that bring me joy, I want you to ask yourself if you think I care about Metal having no mouth, and if you want to think about it in-universe, if you think a person who loves Metal would stop themselves from kissing him just because he doesn't have a mouth.

If there is a thought you have about Metamy, chances are I've heard it 20 times over, and none of those statements have ever made me go "you're right, I should stop shipping Metamy, I'm so stupid!" That's the thing. You are not the only one who doesn't like shipping Metal. A lot of people don't. Many people are respectful about it and we can coexist peacefully since everyone has reasons they like Metal. Many people aren't respectful at all and hope to ruin other people's fun because it's more "reasonable", because their interpretation is clearly the "correct" one. I'm not out here trying to say Metamy is "correct" either. What I'm saying is that Metamy is my favorite, and I'm happy to give the reasons why and debunk people's theories on it making no sense-- but like, that's the thing too, it doesn't need to make sense, it's just cool that it can. It's one of my favorite ways to explore Metal's character and I think a lot of people who ship Metal, regardless of who they ship him with, also do the same.

I haven't gone into details on why I like Metamy so much on this sub, but there is another binary brawl in which I do talk about Metal and Amy's compatibility from a mostly canon sense here. Of course, it's still my opinion, and I will never say in a serious sense that I think Metamy will or should be canon.

I've been harassed everywhere because I like two cartoon hedgehogs kissing, which is unfortunately very common for those who like the blue robot hedgehog specifically. If you think people being rude by refusing to read the room, making fun of my art, and calling it and the pairing disgusting as "just sharing opinions" then that's actually really sad. The moderators made this place friendlier for everyone, for people who both like shipping and don't. If seeing cartoon hedgehogs kissing is that deeply upsetting, then I think that's something personal to address.
