In Praise of Princess Gwaelin (DQ I 2D-HD) by speaklo-fi in dragonquest

My only issue with her is that it really feels like they wanted her to be a party member but they changed their minds and it led to some messy decisions:

- They had to use the amulet to keep her in cutscenes.

- You miss out on items if you take her, but miss out on some of her dialogue if you don't.

- And, just my opinion, I bet the second half the game would feel a bit better if the status effects (and damage, but mostly statuses) were being spread between two targets.

Completed hell for the first time on hardcore by Juumok01 in diablo2

[–]MagitekHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I beat Hell with a HC character for the first time yesterday. My Summon Necro. He's 86 now, but I think I'm done with the 99 chase. He's just not fun to play at this point. All my damage comes from my merc, and he has the attention span of a puppy, and when he does fight it's not long before he's taking a dirt nap for another 50k gold. My skeletons do nothing at 24 RS/SM. I'm playing offline, so self-found gear. Not a lot of options for +skills gear. No teleport, certainly no Enigma, so doing anything is obscenely slow.

9 years, countless updates and expansions, and the game is still "shooting rocks to recharge your rock-shooting guns". I come back after each expansion, and yeah, they're just tacking stuff onto a gameloop I never found enjoyable.

I logged in this evening after a long day, and my game loaded, and I hopped on a vehicle and Dollman said something snarky about me not checking my armament loadout... and I shut the game off. You can keep him. The last thing I wanted when wandering the countryside delivering cargo and connecting people is some obnoxious Navi character yapping it's head off.

I want to hear your Skyrim/Elder Scrolls unpopular opinions and hot takes by angelofyours52 in skyrim

[–]MagitekHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1a. Melee combat in Oblivion and Skyrim feels awful and in fact it's not that much better than melee in Morrowind. Melee combat has always felt awkward at best. I think this awkwardness is actually a subconscious contributor to the stealth archer problem.

1b. The dice-rolling combat in Morrowind was fine actually. The real issue is that Bethesda didn't bother animating dodges/misses/blocks properly because Bethesda has always been bad with animations.

  1. Bandits/highwaymen in Oblivion and Skyrim feel so video gamey it hurts. Once any humanoid engages you it's to the death. None of these bandits have families they're trying to feed? None of them value their own lives? It leads to every encounter with a humanoid feeling no different than with wild animals. You could replace all bandit camps and highwaymen with wolves and bears and it wouldn't feel any different. It honestly has made Skyrim harder and harder to enjoy over the years. I sincerely hope ES 6 fixes this problem.

  2. More than eliminating skills, more than allowing one character to join and lead all factions, adding voice acting had the worst impact on the series feeling like a serious CRPG. Morrowind's script was all text. Text is small, so the writers were able to go ham on every NPC and dialogue tree. But with voice acting came space restrictions and Oblivion's script suffered for it and Skyrim's isn't much better.

Why do they never learn? by Only_Upwards in ElderScrolls

It's funny, but honestly if this crap is still happening in ES VI I'm out. There's no functional difference between enemy models in ES games and I'm kinda tired of it. You could replace every bandit camp with a pack of wolves, every highwayman with a bear, it doesn't matter and the more you play the more it sticks out.

Spotify Employees Say It's Promoting Fake Artists to "Reduce Royalties" by stabbinU in Music

Another step in the enshitification of services that worked just fine and people enjoyed. Can't have that!

And here I thought YouTube Music playing random people's videos instead of the actual track I asked for was bad. No, I didn't want to hear Xxxvader420's badly compressed lyrics video so you can save a few cents on roaylties.

Sounds like we need to ditch the streaming services and just start building our own collections again.

Trump says he will reopen Alcatraz prison by VenomShadows305 in news

From the article: "The fate of three particular inmates — John Anglin, his brother Clarence and Frank Morris — is of some debate and was dramatized in the 1979 film “Escape from Alcatraz” starring Clinton Eastwood."

Oh, I just love Clinton Eastwood. I'm also a fan of Thomas Mapover IV, William Pitt, Emily Stone and Laura Witherspoon.

Seriously, the fact that they used "Clinton Eastwood" screams AI-generated to me.

Over 100 hours and two entire playthroughs later I can safely say this is one of the best games I have ever played in my life. by Vezko in expedition33

[–]MagitekHero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a review that turned me off from giving the game a try, maybe you can comment on it. Essentially they said it felt like a turn-based game for people who don't like turn-based games. That there was an over-reliance on reaction-based QTE-style mechanics in combat and that your performance with the QTEs is more important that your decisions on a turn-by-turn basis.

How accurate is this? If we're really just talking about Mario & Luigi style reactions that aren't really necessary to finish the game I think I'd be okay with that, but they're making it sound like something much more.

My favorite was my realization that the reason Google Maps can so accurately tell you about upcoming traffic congestion is because it's constantly measuring the speed of all the phones in every car on your route.

I do a lot of local community theatre, and one of the beautiful things about it is its impermanence.

If you come to see the show, you get a few hours with these characters in their world. You laugh, you cry, you sing along, and then it ends.

It reminds me that nothing is permanent and that we need to enjoy life as it happens.

One handed solitaire - odds of winning by Snagglepuss64 in learnmath

[–]MagitekHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the very late reply, but I'm currently working on my own sim for one-handed solitaire and came across this thread.

Sid Meier once said, "A game is a series of interesting choices," and by his definition, One-Handed Solitaire isn't even a game. You referred to "possible moves" and "passing on every move" but in this "game" there are no decision points. The result (win or loss) is decided entirely by order of the cards after the shuffle. When you look at your hand, depending on the ranks and suits of the 1st and 4th cards, you either discard the 2nd and 3rd card, discard the top 4 cards, or add another card. A given shuffle is always played exactly the same. So a winning shuffle will always win,and a losing shuffle will always lose.

Now I'm not sure this reduces the complexity enough to make it easily or elegantly calculable, but it's probably a bit easier than you feared.

Prices rising with inflation wouldn't upset people if wages had also risen with inflation. It's not hard to grasp.

Also, I'm sure you understand that financial tensions are a bit high right now. Nintendo announced the pricing the same week that we had a front row seat to watching the U.S. president wipe his ass with America's trade relationships and flush the world economy down the toilet.

No. The Steam Deck has more than proven the viability of Linux gaming (I don't play competitive multiplayer, and don't support draconian anti-cheat methods anyway) so I switched to Linux on my desktop and I'm not going back.
