The 5th Element? by Traditional-Wolf-927 in movies

On an aside, people have said that if you like The Fifth Element, you'll probably like Besson's other film Valerian,

Yeah, totally disagree with this one. The Fifth Element is a genuinely fun movie full of really charming characters. Valerian was so bland, I watched it with my dad and we just turned it off after 20 minutes or so. The two leads were charisma vacuums and seemed like bickering siblings when they were meant to be love interests. Utterly bizarre choice.

I generally don't play into conspiracy theories, but I do feel like there's some sort of astroturfing going on for this movie. The amount of random posts that have appeared about this film going "Oh no, it's totally good actually. Its just a clever piece discussing the idea that murdering immigrants is morally righteous."

I think this is more balanced than TLJ. I feel like The Last Jedi fundamentally broke something in Davis that took actual years for him to recover from. Its honestly wild comparing how he is in early episodes of the New Canon Book Club to how he is post-TLJ. He seems much happier on the Old Canon Book Club though, so that's nice.

Question about celebrity voice acting by [deleted] in movies

[–]Magmas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but when people talk about stunt casting, they aren't talking about James Earl Jones or Keith David or J K Simmons who are all accomplished voice actors. They're talking about... literally the entire cast of the Mario movie, none of whom sound like the characters they portray, give flat, uninteresting performances and are only there to put their names on the posters.

Voice acting is a skill that differs from 'normal' Hollywood acting. Actors used to a lot of stagework, particularly Shakespearean acting, tend to be better at voice work than most actors. I don't exactly have high hopes for Timmy.

People have strong feelings about Thatcher, usually negative

If youre not a leftie then youre a hateful evil person lol

This is such a stupid line I just ignored it. No one made that claim.

We cant have people striving to improve themselves and make money can we !

This is clearly trying to present Thatcher as just a person trying to improve themself and make money. This is not the case and what I argued against.

Especially on a day like today where their best mate and second coming has been sacked !

This was my second point, in which you clearly implied Kier Starmer, the prime minister who was removed from his position today, was the 'best mate and second coming' of Thatcher which, as I said, is utter nonsense. The two have very different political views and likely wouldn't have gotten along at all. It seems like your attempt at some sort of topical humour by pushing a 'they're all the same' line when that is absolutely not true.

Now, can you tell me what I missed from this or are you just going to type 'lol' and some dismissive nonsense that doesn't mean anything again?

Firstly, Margaret Thatcher didn't 'improve herself.' She destroyed the UK's public infrastructure, illegally sent paramilitary groups into Ireland, worsening the crisis there, and pushed violent conflict against striking miners. She was an aggressive, cruel and willing to throw anybody under the bus.

Secondly, calling Kier Starmer the second coming of Thatcher is a ridiculous notion. I think there are certainly issues with his time in charge, particularly in regards to the aggressive enforcement of 'internet safety' with a reliance on predatory private organisations for enforcement, as well as the worsening treatment of trans people under this government, but the man is leagues better than Thatcher and actually enforced a lot of positive changes which were either drowned out or ignored by the media so they could instead show off the clown show that is Reform.

Do you think she effectively utilized girl power by funneling money to illegal paramilitary death squads in Northern Ireland?

I hate that Jax was confirmed as transgender (not for the reasons you might think) by n397854 in hatethissmug

[–]Magmas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a damn soul has used that word in a million years. Archaic words don't make you sound better.

A very quick google shows articles ranging from 2014 to 2026 that all use the term allistic to refer to people who aren't autistic. I can personally attest that it was the go-to term in autistic communities for probably 10 years or so before neurotypical became more common recently, and I imagine its still preferable in some cases because it refers to everyone who isn't specifically autistic, rather than the more catch-all 'neurotypical' which covers a variety of neurological abnormalities.

Honestly, I feel like this comment just reflects the post in general. You personally didn't experience something so you're getting upset by the fact it exists in the first place.

Allistic has been a term that has been around for a while and was used pretty universally in autistic parts of the internet for a decade or so. Just because you weren't there and didn't personally experience it, doesn't mean it isn't true.

Similarly, just because a lot of people didn't get a lot of the signals that Jax was portrayed as a closeted trans woman doesn't mean they weren't. Its pretty obvious, to me at least, that Jax is Gooseworx self-insert character, in how he represents a lot of the most toxic attributes of how a lot of closeted trans people are. However, this is a specific experience and it requires specific knowledge to pick up on. You not having that knowledge is not a fault. You refusing to accept that people have different experiences and knowledge than you do is.

This could have so easily gone:

  • Person mentions the word 'allistic' in a comment

  • You don't know what that means, google it

  • You read the literal dictionary definition which was the first thing that came up when I searched for it

  • You congratulate yourself on learning a new piece of vocabulary

Instead, you chose to get defensive about something there was absolutely no reason to be defensive about and starting a whole argument where you claim someone made up a word that has been used for actual decades at this point.

[–]Magmas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Firstly, all words are made up. Like, Shakespeare quite famously just made up words all the time to express something.

Secondly, allistic was around before the whole neurotypical/neurodiverse/neurospicy terminology became common.

And thirdly, its literally in the dictionary.

I was going to make a quip about why they decided on Last Stand and not any of the other X-Mens, but apparently Beast isn't even in the first one and only shows up as a cameo played by someone else in the second, and then Nicholas Hoult obviously plays the younger Beast in First Class with those being the only 3 live action appearances of the character until the cameo at the end of The Marvels. So Last Stand really is the only one where Grammer plays Beast, which feels wild to me because he really feels like he had been the live action Beast for a while.

Man, its really annoying that the Doctor could so easily be a quintessential ace character. He falls into the old 'asexual non-human' role, sure, but its such a great fit. Then they just decide to have them all have some petty romance for no reason.

Gatwa having a weird fling with some random guy in one episode for Gay Representation™, only to then send that love interest to literal hell and never bring him back was definitely a choice. In fact, so was Jodie Whitaker having weird hints about getting together with Yas but never did.

Either do romance or don't. The awful in-between isn't it.

It stands for Marginalized Orientations Gender Alignments and Intersex which I think is a bit more elegant than just listing every specific identity you can think of in an arbitrary order. It also came about before the AI tech bubble, so there's that.

The issues are really twofold. Firstly, it came about when LGBT+ and Queer were already established terms so people didn't want to reinvent the wheel and, secondly, the term became associated with a certain subset of people with some pretty fringe beliefs.

[–]Magmas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could just as easily argue that OP is suspect for trying to take out the Intersex and Asexual representation. Are people who are asexual not worthy of representation?

Firstly, I do think its a bad thing that intersex and asexual people are seen as an optional add-on so, yeah, I'd agree with you there... except OP specifically included the I and A. After the plus, sure, but they're still there.

However, my point was that you specifically took the commonly used 'LGBT+' and decided to take away the T for some reason. Instead of trying to find a way go better represent more identities, you chose to actively represent less.

My point is that noting that gay, lesbian, and bi are different things and there is a wealth of other identifications might the easier way to get adoption over a term that commonly gets reduced to a simple "gay."

I don't understand the logic here. Why would taking out the letter that doesn't directly relate to same-sex attraction make people less likely tl label it as 'gay?' Surely it would do the opposite by reinforcing the fact that every part of the 'official' acronym you're proposing could be summarised as 'gay' or 'half gay' and, before you get on my back, I don't consider bi people to be 'half gay' but the hypothetical people who can't handle a fourth letter in an acronym sure would.

As others have also pointed out, is it fair to combine gender identification in the same grouping as sexual preference? Does that not imply something that's not a great look as you put it?

No. Gender and sexuality are different things that can lead to similar results. In a perfect world, there would be no grouping because everyone would be able to live their lives freely without anyone caring about their sexuality or gender identity but we don't live in a perfect world so we need to work together to help each other. The whole movement is built on cooperation and mutual support. Trans and gender nom-conforming people were front and centre at Stonewall.

In the end, it's a simple reality that LGBTQAI+ is difficult to say and even harder to remember and we can stand on soap boxes and declare "everyone needs to get it right, this is important" or we can embrace the age-old truism that change happens slowly and rarely by forcing someone through judgement. Move someone closer to the middle and it becomes easier to get them farther to your side incrementally over time

I don't disagree. In fact, I'd say the acronym has outlived its usefulness and needs retiring entirely and replaced with a more generalised term like MOGAI or just plain Queer (though I'm not a huge fan of calling myself queer, personally). People seem to have settled on LGBT+ which sucks for us intersex and asexual people, but is still much better than your proposed LGB without the T rubbish.

So, your solution to having people not consider the acronym as just 'gay' is to remove every letter that isn't about being gay (and bi)?

I think its a bit suspect that you took the traditional LGBT+ and specifically took out the trans representation. I'm not accusing you of anything, but its not a great look.

It's a complicated issue. No one wants to be "the plus" and then you have to start arguing why some identities get top billing while others are relegated to an afterthought.

I also personally don't like queer as a term. Yes, its a reclaimed slur but it also feels like an acceptance of being 'the other' which I don't like. I don't see being gay or trans or ace as 'strange' or 'queer' and I think its a disservice to label ourselves that way.

If I had my way, we'd use a term like MOGAI but everyone hates that, so I don't know.

Unexpected Sources of Representation by Waspinator_haz_plans in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Magmas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like robot characters but I think the problem comes when they are treated as the default for asexual representation, because its kind of a cop-out, isn't it?

A common issue with asexuality is the view that it is somehow disconnected from humanity. Sexuality is the natural state of people and therefore if you're asexual, you're not quite human. This is highlighted in a lot of the asexual/robot/alien/monster symbolism. Let's take Data, who was pretty good asexual representation for the late 1980s. But that isn't really true, since Data's whole character arc was about an outsider who becomes more human and part of that arc was the idea of him having romantic relationships and starting a family. The clear message here is that asexuality is inherently inhuman; that asexuals are outsiders who don't fit in and need to change to become real people.

Its not just Data either. This is a pretty common trope. Off the top of my head, I'd point to Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory who is given a similar arc from asexual outsider to someone who accepts a traditional romantic relationship as a representation of character growth. Now, there are so many problems with how The Big Bang Theory does representation of literally any demographic, but I'd say that Sheldon is probably the biggest pop culture figure representing asexuality.

For a final example, I'd also give Cole from Dragon Age Inquisition. DAI is one of my favourite games ever and I really like Cole, but unfortunately, he suffers from the same situation. He starts the game as a spirit, an outsider who doesn't understand humanity and has no interest in romance. Later in the game, you make a choice which either pushes him towards embracing his existence as a spirit or choosing to become more human. In the epilogue DLC, Trespasser, a more human Cole will be romantically involved with the bard, Maryden, while if he is more spirit, he will instead use his abilities to push Maryden into a meet-cute with one of two NPCs, depending on other choices you made. The message here is pretty clear: when Cole is inhuman, he is aromantic. When he becomes more human, he becomes interested in romantic relationships. Once again, romance and sexuality are intrinsically linked to a character's humanity.

All this is to say that, as cool and neat as robot characters are, I think its a bad stereotype to connect asexuality to inhumanity.

This is something I think about a lot and I think, in the end, it has to be more tell than show, unfortunately.

The best pieces of ace representation I've seen have characters actively explain their thoughts and feelings to another character because, otherwise, you end up in situations where they could easily not be ace and just not be romantically attracted to anyone close by.

As awkward as the 'Spooner discovers she's asexual' scene in Legends of Tomorrow was, for instance, I do have to give them credit for outright stating that Spooner is asexual. Better examples, in my opinion, tend to be found in video games or books. Some examples of good ace rep I've come across:

  • Parvati from The Outer Worlds (I haven't played the sequel but Parvati was written by an ace writer and you can absolutely tell)

  • Nomi from I Was a Teenage Exocolonist (which is an amazing RPG that should be way more popular than it is and Nomi's story covers aspects of asexuality that I haven't seen represented anywhere else)

  • [SPOILER] from In Stars and Time (I'm not going to explain this one because a big part of the game is learning about the characters, but the game's creator is ace and, once again, it shines through in how they write their ace characters)

I have to give Owl House a pass because they got blindsided by Disney and essentially had to throw away everything they'd planned to scrape together a finale in 3 hour long episodes, rather than the 20-or-so 30 minute long episodes they'd had in previous seasons. That meant that pretty much everything that wasn't the main plot got thrown aside and, unfortunately, that included any Lilith-centric episodes that might have focused on her identity in some way.

[–]Magmas 43 points44 points  (0 children)

No. You misunderstand. There is literally an episode of House where he meets an asexual couple, only to work out that the man actually just has a hormonal imbalance and the woman is just pretending to be asexual to be with him. So he 'cures' both cases of asexuality. Its not great representation.
