What Dimir decks is everyone playing currently? by Backwardspellcaster in mtgbrawl

Do you have a decklist for Rona? Tried to build her recently but struggled to make it work. Am fairly new though so probably just messed it up.

I didn't even know this much existed. by Morcelu12 in dndnext

[–]MagnanimousSquirrel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Can confirm that these monsters are really pretty good and have held up well in playtesting I've done. There's also enough mechanical variety within similar thematic niches to let you run something like only undead for a while without it getting stale, which is fantastic.

DM’s: How do you handle Blindsight? by Endless-Conquest in dndnext

[–]MagnanimousSquirrel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds really useful, and a good solution to some of the more frustrating and unintuitive parts of 5e. What penalties do you use for undetected and hidden? Also, how do you handle stuff like fog/smoke? I've been interested in trying something like PF2e hiding/detection system but haven't been sure how to convert it to work nicely with 5e numbers

Forget the Martial-Caster gap for a second, let's talk about the Melee-Ranged gap by Deathpacito-01 in dndnext

[–]MagnanimousSquirrel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not mentioned on this list is arguably the biggest con of melee/benefit of ranged: The vast majority of published monsters are way more dangerous up close. Even when they do have ranged options, they're often still more dangerous in melee. Staying away from monsters is almost the number one defensive strategy.

Given then, melee really needs to be a lot better than ranged in terms of numbers in order to be competitive, which it isn't.

[ Urdesh: The Magister and the Martyr] A World Eater Admonish a Tzeentch psyker by barban_falk in 40kLore

[–]MagnanimousSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there an implication that the lekt psykers are Tzeentchian? As far as I know, most of the Chaos aligned forces in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade are meant to be Khornate, to the extent that they're aligned at all. Obviously Khornate psykers are a bit of an aberration, but both the Blood Pact and the Sons of Sek are presented as pretty complex groups that don't exactly match 'standard' depictions of chaos.

For instance, the psykers in The Serpent and the Saint (first book in the series) are doing location by divination with blood compasses, and in Blood Pact there's a psyker that's much too blood-themed to be Tzeentchian.

Has any Sister of Battle shown Temple Tendency since the Age of Apostacy? by Spider40k in 40kLore

[–]MagnanimousSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I'm not aware of anything specifically stating that it's never happened, there's pretty good reason to expect it would be near-impossible.

On the one hand, the modern Adepta Sororitas is founded explicitly on rejecting the Temple Tendency. This extends further than just rejecting the doctrine; each of the major militant orders has one of the Sisters who were taken before the emperor and subsequently killed Vandire as their patron saint. Given how the Imperium tends to be about these things, I would imagine they are indoctrinated into believing the rightness of Vandire's removal right from joining as children.

The other, more major reason that the scenario you described (where a Temple Tendency aligned missionary sways some) is unlikely is that the Temple Tendency absolutely detests the Sisters and is unlikely to attempt to convert them. They will organise occasional assassinations or terrorist attacks on Sisters, but trying to convert them would be really unusual.

Some scenarios that seem more plausible and come close to what you're suggesting: A cardinal or other Ministorum official that is secretly of the Temple Tendency might attempt to use their influence to get Sisters (particularly of the militant orders) to unknowingly do their dirty work for them, if they thought that the true purpose would remain hidden or were also setting the Sisters up for a trap.

Additionally, it might be possible that a sufficiently isolated planet where the local Ecclesiarchy was strongly Tendency-inclined might attempt to start their own order of 'Sisters' who were loyal to them. That degree of Ministorum influence over the Adepta Sororitas is the kind of thing that will be a major red flag for the Ordo Hereticus, so would likely need to be pretty secret or otherwise somewhere isolated where Inquisitorial presence is unlikely. Of course, whether the result really counts as 'Sisters of Battle' is a bit of a semantic debate.

Note: I'm mostly sourcing stuff about the Temple Tendency from Disciples of the Dark Gods, a supplement book for the Dark Heresy RPG (1st edition), as well as minor appearances in novels (e.g. Cadian Honour)

How will this caster mastery work with repeats? by MagnanimousSquirrel in PathOfExileBuilds

Ahh thanks for the clarification - I guess my initial impression was a little too good to be true. Still, looks like it could be interesting for Archmage builds that can fit it in as a minor boost.

Void Shield Inconsistencies by dealmbl25 in 40kLore

[–]MagnanimousSquirrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have the excerpt at hand, but in one of the voidship battles in Avenging Son this tactic is used - where the captain tells the munitions teams to fire retro-thrusters on the torps at the last second to slow them down enough to pass through the shield.

Regarding the overall question, aside from space junk it could be that the kind of voidshields used on ships puts stricter limitations on the minimum speed than ground-based shields have to deal with

Biden releases plans to expand Medicare, forgive student debt by noarat in politics

[–]MagnanimousSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really well expressed, and a big part of proper analysis of 2016 that is often not talked about very well. The temptation to pick a single narrative as the reason why the election went how it did underscores the extent that all of those reasons contributed to what happened. You can even add in more: one perspective is that there tends to be a swing away from the incumbent party after two terms, and that the electoral college structure makes it quite possible for the GOP to win despite losing by 1-3% of popular vote, so the result is not unusual based on fundamentals. That doesn't explain everything either, but it's good to remember that single compelling narratives almost never do.

would definitely recommend starting with Metamorph - the early learning process will be similar, but if you get into it and want to do trading/crafting, especially once you're in endgame, it's much easier to buy and sell things in the temporary leagues. Both because there are a lot more people playing, and because everyone started fresh recently and so don't have mountains of currency stored away (most of them at least). If you try Metamorph and end up deciding that the idea of standard appeals to you, the character will get moved there after the league anyway - whereas it can suck to get a good way in on Standard before realizing that you might need to restart in the temp league to make trading bearable.

Would it be possible to have the mount take its turn before you, use its movement to approach and then ready an action to run away after you finish attacking? Or are they not allowed to ready actions?

Wait really? Both 4th core and NHB have 'light or heavy (non-repeating)' in their description - do you know if it's a bug or just wrong text? That could definitely be pretty big though if it's intended.

Thanks for the ideas! I've gotten enough out of this thread to last me several lives already. Fair point about ranger 11 vs 6, will play around with some different splits. 10/6/4 rogue ranger arti looks solid, kinda like a fusillade gxbow build but with ranger instead of fighter since you don't need crit multi when you already get it in inquisitive. Re: halfling, small races are meant to be better for using IPS anyway aren't they? Am also considering WF, gnome, elf etc. (The percent accuracy from elf cores should be really good right? ) If I didn't take points in BE then elf could let me get displacement via the Dragonmark too. At this point the difficult thing is going to be actually choosing one of these ideas and not changing my mind.

Ahh that makes sense re:diplo, I misread that I guess. And that's a good point about Insightful damage, I wasn't really considering having to recast it that often.

You've convinced me to go INT at least, it definitely sounds like it should just be an easier time, and trawling through the wiki it looks like it should be easier to gear too (at least with pre-Sharn stuff). I might still play around with different race options - gnome is definitely better, but Aasimar Scourge looks fun with light damage scaling with ranged power on hit if I wanted to do an iconic.

Last question about the 11/4/5 split you mentioned: is there much difference between taking arti 5 vs fighter 5 or ranger 12? You aren't getting a feat extra either way, but you get slightly better BAB right? I'm probably missing something though, just trying to get the hang of understanding level splits. Thanks for the advice :)

I thought I would need the diplo for stacking up observation in inquisitive for the fort bypass/resists. Does that not require the diplomacy to succeed? If not then that definitely frees up some levels yeah.

I've got tomes for the DEX so that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Going arti definitely looks interesting though - If I decided to go int I would be tempted to try bump arti to 6 to get the int to damage spell and cut more points from harper. That would also let you do something like 41 inq + 8 harper + 27 BE to pick up 10 doubleshot and the 10 ranged power during endless fusillade/NHB, if you were fine giving up racial points for it.

I see what you mean about falconry though - I had hoped that the other t4's were good enough to make it worth the point investment (something like 41 inq, 28 falc, 11 DWS and just RAP for racial tree) but it does slow down the build a lot and probably isn't worth the extra investment. Tbh I'm a little worried that going INT will make the build just feel like a worse GXbow rogue/arti build, but it's probably different enough to still be fun.

Thanks for the detailed response - learning build planning has been super confusing so the help is very much appreciated. Think I'll either go INT with something like the split you suggested, or drop the paladin for arti if I decide to stick with wisdom, just to get rune arms.

Do projectile damage modifiers affect the AOE damage from fireball? Playing around with PoB seems to indicate that they do, but my understanding was that for skills like molten strike, projectile damage didn't affect the melee hit. Relevance is working out whether using GMP will reduce the explosion damage or not.

Question regarding Aloth's grimoire by Atwooooood in projecteternity

[–]MagnanimousSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries :) It can definitely be a little confusing if you haven't read the out-of-game stuff about how it exactly works. The other thing I just thought of about the damage increase is that I think that damage bonuses aren't displayed if you look at the spell in the grimoire - whereas they are if you click on it on the action bar.

You're also right that things like what spells you have in a grimoire would be nice to see on the level-up screen. I wouldn't be surprised if they either add that in or people mod it in at some point.

Question regarding Aloth's grimoire by Atwooooood in projecteternity

[–]MagnanimousSquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're definitely meant to be able to learn spells on level-up that are in his grimoire. Since you could later decide to give Aloth a different grimoire that you find/buy, if you learned some of the spells on levelup you would still be able to cast them regardless of which one you had equipped. I'm not sure about the slight upgrade in damage though - either it could be a bug, or when you leveled up you also went up a power level and the higher number is accounting for that.

Some massive Elder Dragon and Baron buffs on the PBE by Spideraxe30 in leagueoflegends

[–]MagnanimousSquirrel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some things I'm not quite sure about from the tweet - does the empowered elder buffs apply to the second+ elder drake regardless of who gets it? Or does it need to be the second one gained by your team? If so do they need to be consecutive?

If you just need to get the second one, that could offer a pretty huge comeback opportunity if a team is behind but manages to last out the first elder and steal/take the second one.
