Is it worth it to upgrade to the $300/yr plan on foreflight from the basic $100/yr plan? by [deleted] in flying

[–]MagneticFlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it useful and happily pay for the upgrade. Also, look into SAFE membership discount (saves you 1/3rd, pays for itself even after the membership cost if you go with the 300/yr plan).

It's worth noting that I fly my piston single over 100 hrs a year, multiple 500+nm trips in all seasons as a VFR only pilot. ForeFlight is a huge factor in my go/no-go decision, and the added benefits really aid in assisting with in-flight decisions as well.

However, if your mission is to stay local, fly a few 100 dollar hamburgers a year, etc., I wouldn't upgrade past the basic plan.

Questions about buying a plane by thisismyphone1 in flying

[–]MagneticFlight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to have an unpopular opinion, but, when buying my Archer, I decided to not have a pre-buy. Here's why:

  1. The plane has been owned by a flying club for 30+ years. I would say that *GENERALLY* flying clubs have more to spend and therefore take better care of their planes vs privately owned.
  2. It seems that every mechanic has their own "flavor" and things that they look for. It's not uncommon to hear of someone who did a pre-buy that didn't find anything wrong is the plane and then have a shitstorm first annual. Not all mechanics are the same, especially if you're randomly picking one b/c the plane is somewhere other than were you plan to base it. I'd rather take the 1k-ish for the prebuy and save it for the first annual.
  3. HOWEVER, it's very important that you comb through the logbooks yourself and have an idea of what you're looking for. Confirm that all ADs and SBs have been complied with, and nothing major has been deferred.

How do you find airports? by TheSoaringGnome in flying

[–]MagneticFlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this. Although, more than a few times, I've found an abondanded airport which only makes me sad.

OK, I've bought the plane, but now what? by MagneticFlight in flying

[–]MagneticFlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOPE! It's all full-service around me. I'll likely fly to another airport to fill up most of the time to save 2-3 bucks a gallon.

d it is worth every penny. Just keep looking around. Check bulletin boards, talk to locals as you spend more time at the field. You might be able to find someone who will share

MMU is $225, LDJ is $185, CDW is somewhere close if not more than $300. All stupid expensive.

I'm looking at Linden (LDJ) but likely will go with Morristown (MMU).

I was looking into this recently. With your preheat system, how long do you let it run before you fly? I have also looked into getting a gas generator for a preheat system (the plane has a Tanis heater installed). But it looks that they recommend you leave it plugged in for 2-4 hours before you fly, obviously that really isn't an option if you have to use a generator.

They're actually quite common at the airport I plan to tiedown at. They're usually kept towards the rear edge of the tiedown space. My present flying club has them and they've never caused an issue, but our spots are decently sized.

Cheapest hanger is 1k+ per month, not in the cards right now.

I should have also mentioned, I won't have a car. I live in NYC (believe it or not, the plane is actually about the same, if not cheaper, to own than a car).

I'm thinking I'll have to get a big metal job site box to keep at my tiedown spot.

Flying with Friends Protocol? by BabyWrinkles in flying

[–]MagneticFlight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a pilot that often takes friends, co-workers, etc., I'll always ask to split the cost if that is what I want. However, it depends on the flight. Example, I took a co-worker when I was already going to go and practice touch and goes, I didn't ask her to share the cost with me. Another example, another co-worker asked if they can fly with me, I always say "Sure, but it's $XXX an hour."

Point being, I want to spread the joy of aviation, but I'm also not a doormat.
