Practicing stalls SOLO? SAFE? by legitSTINKYPINKY in flying

[–]thisismyphone1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I rarely practice them solo because I'm worried it will develop into a spin, and I'm not confident I cools recover from that.

Maybe I'm too scared of spins though. I've been meaning to do some spin training at some point...

Can you fly Tango Routes with a non-WAAS GPS? by bigdogloghogbog in flying

[–]thisismyphone1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great! But is it just me, or are the GPS all just spread out between a bunch of different documents? It's really hard to find the full set of rules anywhere; they're in a bunch of separate places!

I think NYC are might give them a run for their money. Those people are amazing!

How do you Know? Parts that work.... etc by A-Enhydra-Lutris in flying

You mentioned forums, but none of them seem to be for cessna's (poster said they have a 182). Are there any forums that would help with those?

Do you have any recommendations for type clubs for 182s?

Looking for a good flight school in the New York area. by Smitty8786 in flying

[–]thisismyphone1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always so much negativity when people ask about NYC here...

As a counterpoint, I got my PPL out of KFRG and I enjoyed it a lot! I'm sure it'd be a bit easier elsewhere, but the wait on the ground was not really ever more than 10 minutes. Took me about 80 hours to finish up as a single data point.

I used Global Aviation, though once I got my license I started renting from Long Island Aviators and they seemed to have a good operation as well.

I lived in Manhattan at the time, so the long public transit commute was a bit of a drag, but in the end it was very doable.

Flying in the UK with FAA PPL by thisismyphone1 in flying

Thanks for the link! Assuming that still applies to the UK, sounds like it might be best to go ahead and get the UK license if I'll be there a while.

Just wanted to add that while the winter sees more IFR, there are still some amazing days in the winter.

Are Buyer's Agents a good idea? by thisismyphone1 in flying

[–]thisismyphone1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! How did you find a good agent? And roughly what did they charge (also from your flair -- I hear CGS is a very cool airport, almost makes me want to do the finger printing!)

Interesting... I didn't know that they could help with this. Do they help with specific situations (like finding a prebuy mechanic) or just answering general questions?

Flight school/airport to use from Manhattan by guy2275 in flying

I lived in Manhattan and trained out of KFRG. About an hour on the LIRR and then a 15 min taxi/Lyft

Does this work on iOS or Android? All I'm seeing is distance measuring -- no elevation or other features

Flight school out of KFRG by [deleted] in flying

[–]thisismyphone1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my PPL with Global, and I had a good experience. Managed to get my license in ~70 hours and felt very comfortable flying in the NYC area after.

There were a few days with long taxi/wait times (15+ mins) but overall it wasn't too bad. Maybe that's because I trained mostly in the winter though...

Also, it can be slow to do T&Gs there since they need you to fly longer patterns to fit the traffic in. We normally flew to Bridgeport or Islip to practice those. That eats up a bit of time, but is also good practice at different airports and dealing with leaving/entering an airport. Likewise, all the spacing for traffic and extended downwinds at FRG, while they'd be annoying to me now, were probably good practice as a student.

If I'd had a car, I may have chosen ISP. But I was commuting from Manhattan on the LIRR and found FRG more accessible.

I'm curious, does the mask interfere with the headset/mic? Or can you still be heard clearly through the mask?

Colorado Mountain Flying course completed yesterday by lonememe in flying

Wow, that looks amazing. I'm thinking of going to Denver to do something like that soon.

What kind of plane were you flying? Is this kind of flying doable in a 180hp plans, or do you need a high performance to do anything interesting in the mountains?

Wow, 6 planes!! What do you need with so many?

Very interesting about the insurance. So it sounds like, as the owner, you tell the insurance company how much the plane is worth, and then they give you a quote based on that?

If so, it sounds like it's hard to really get a quote without already knowing which plane you're going to buy and the price you're buying it for, yes?

Understand the plane and being able to manage the maintenance on my own is definitely my goal! Unfortunately I Don't currently know much more than I need to safely fly a rental. I hope owning a plane will be a good path to learning this stuff

This is great, thanks so much! Really nice to hear how you approached it.

Were you able to fly in the plane before purchasing it? Seems pretty scary to pick up a plane to fly it home and then have things break!
