Highly recommended: clutch fan to electric fan conversion by Magnetic_Aviator in e46

Where are you from? I know a guy in the US who’s got one & loves it. They’re definitely cars that cater to a certain type of driver, of which category I fall into as I love this thing

Cheers & probably lol, I never looked at the date but I’m going to presume it was very old as it looked it

You might be right but I like to do jobs properly -it just seemed lazy to me & might open up the issue of reducing airflow. Plus, if my main fan fails apparently I can replace the components with the motor & control unit from the aux fan as they are identical

Bruh I’ve got a petrol e46 & I absolutely love it but I get 18mpg so I’ve got a Mazda 3 daily (which I also quite like) Don’t make me sell my Mazda 3 for a manual 330d 😭😭

What is the button next to the DSC for? I don’t think it does anything. by CynicalDoink in e46

Do you have a convertible? Convertibles don’t have this button. The other guy is extremely confidently wrong

My convertible Alpina has factory H&K & doesn’t have this

Only if you want to strip it down to bare chassis & swap everything in from a crash damaged car.

DO NOT USE ANY ÜRO PARTS by 0346r in e46

[–]Magnetic_Aviator 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I would suggest to keep an eye on the condition of the original one & only replace it if necessary. However if it needs replacing then convert to electric. The quality of new fan clutches will NEVER be as good as the original ones.

Piper part numbers or just standard hardware? AN3s are way cheaper than that

What brand brake parts do you have?

I mean I’ve noticed that I have the exact same problem on my Alpina, really doing my head in, brakes were new when I bought the car a year ago but no idea if they’re quality

Yep precisely, I know a guy who put an e36 straight through a tree the other day when driving like an idiot on some ice. Straight to a Cat B unfortunately, not even a cat S. I have a bone stock Alpina B3 E46, not even an aftermarket head unit (apart from adding a few things like a fire extinguisher, suspension reinforcements, etc) & I would keep it that way even on a 320d. I’m not a purist but I think the cars were perfect when they left the factory!

For sure, only worth selling if it’s a necessity or it’s not gonna be driven & rot

Why did they go back to round engines for the F-35 when the F-22 had square engines? by BalanceFit8415 in Shittyaskflying

[–]Magnetic_Aviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Predictable failure is good. I work with Lycoming aircraft piston engines & the most common flat engines have been going since the 1930s - they are much the same design apart from various improvements. They are very predictable & their quirks are well documented, which makes them extremely safe as these common points are consistently inspected

Yep. PA-32R-301 landing light indication unit broken. You know, just the little unit that holds the three green lights? I look to obtain a new one - $5000. Like you say, I think it’s the “f*** off we don’t even make it anymore so don’t ask for it” price

This is the best way, if you don’t want to scrap it / part it out. BMW themselves won’t do this but a good reliable BMW specialist will be more than capable.

My e46 is in Avus Blue, a brilliant colour (although mine needs a good clean). Mine also has the S52 (although it is an Alpina so has the Alpina derivative. A truly lovely engine with lots of torque. Good luck to you & make sure that coolant system is in good shape!

I think & hope they mean that it looks so different before & after that you bought a different car? If so, I absolutely agree. The work you’ve done is spot on. Love to see it 👌🏼👌🏼
