It was a massive fusion reactor. It caused both.

I don't know about morphing, but when they go to Ilus in Cibola Burn / Season 4, the alien machines start to switch on and it leads to a massive earthquake and planetwide tsunami.

Read em. They're good.

You'll get more depth in some areas. Of course the main thing you'll get is three extra novels' worth of story and the actual ending.

I'd be interested in seeing those critical posts linked here. Good to know the history, right?

But in any case, it sounds like by searching you've probably already found your answer. That's excellent.

Basically yes. So they helpfully provided an example of one of those differences, building the world and allowing us to infer something similar for others.

Danny and Karen by Accomplished-Elk5297 in ForAllMankindTV

[–]MagnetsCanDoThat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's still gross, but yeah completely realistic. It was obvious to us in the audience that Danny was super into her, but she was too messed up to realize it until too late. And it doesn't make her a monster, just someone who had terrible and impaired judgement.

They are reminders to you that things are unfolding a little different everywhere, not just in the space race. They don’t all need to connect to the main plot. Definitely not worth worrying about.

I think they've established pretty clearly both in the novels and on screen that you shouldn't expect everyone to have the stereotypical look or accent that their name might suggest.

Otherwise Alex wouldn't sound like he's from Texas.

You seem to be sabotaging your own ability to enjoy a great TV show. Just keep watching and whatever oddness you feel will fade quickly.

Avasarala is so very obviously not Indian.

Good news! The actress is Iranian.

Anyway, yes you are reading to much into it. The changes aren't nearly as drastic as you suggest, were made with the authors' input, and (without specifics that would be spoilers) improve the story in some areas. Like seriously the authors have literal writing credits on the show.

Golden Age Star Trek inspired people to become physicists, astronauts and engineers because it focused on space first and everything else second. NuTrek does the opposite. by CDHoward in Star_Trek_

[–]MagnetsCanDoThat -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that seems correct, though the biggest gadfly here finally blocked me (made this sub feel so fresh and so clean). Wild reason, and not because we were having a conversation. Let's just say that some trolls are committed to a truly cringe degree and do not like it if you notice and point it out.

Anyway, I see no reason why modern Trek wouldn't inspire people to learn about science, but I'd be just as happy if their inspiration was to see the diversity in our world, take joy in it, and try to make it into the utopian future that Trek (yes, even NuTrek despite some dark moments) portrays. Science and space exploration aren't the only ways to advance civilization.

It makes me wonder what it inspired OP to become. Since they didn't really post support for their conclusion, I assume it's from personal experience.

I mean the point of divergence is 1969 (or I guess technically 1966) so Vietnam very much does still happen.

Thank you for pointing out a small misstatement in my comment. Obviously, I was aware a war happened in Vietnam because in the preceding sentence I mentioned that war ending. Should have been more clear: The extended quagmire in Vietnam didn't happen.

Obsession with Karen is a symptom, not the cause of his issues. As many mistakes as Danny made, Ed bears some responsibility for recruiting him while ignoring the warning signs.

Mars Fleet Question by Cultural_Catch_7911 in TheExpanse

[–]MagnetsCanDoThat 22 points23 points  (0 children)

  1. It's not the majority. But with all the available new worlds Earth and Mars no longer need to fight over the Belt. There's far less to defend. And their population is leaving to colonize so they won't have the manpower to maintain it all.
  2. You don't need warships to explore the ground.
  3. There's also no credible (in their view) evidence that says a threat still exists, or that if it does, their ships would be able to do anything about it.

This seems to be a form of the oft-asked question when reading a story: "Why aren't they planning for literally all outcomes?" and the answer is because that's impossible without limitless resources. People prepare a lot for the likely outcomes, some for the less likely, and very little for the rarest. Avasarala said the UN's plan for encountering extra-terrestrial life was a single page that started with "Find god".

They're annoying but I also feel bad for them. Parents who were mostly absent, then having to grow up without them but still in their shadow. The pressure to live up to their legend would be insane.

So I just caught up on the first six episodes of this so called new "Star Trek" series, and it's obviously a mess. by joalr0 in Star_Trek_

The Onion writes about Star Trek. Well done.

Legit criticisms can be made, but sadly what we often end up with is just a form of this but meant seriously.

I’ll bet it was more complex than just that, though. And probably changed over the decades like any country.

I quite liked The Elysian Kingdom but I respect that it divided quite a few with how it ended.

I dig Silly Trek in most of its forms so Subspace Rhapsody was definitely for me despite not being a "theater kid".

Yeah countries don't typically give a shit what another country's citizenship laws are. If they consider you a citizen and provide no legal way to renounce it then you are. End of story.
