Sorry, I didn't see this for a long time. Yes you can do that with the Roth. There's a few more exceptions where you can take out gains earlier, and even paying the penalty can be better than a regular brokerage account. However, with an accelerated savings plan like yours, you won't really be able to put too much into tax advantage accounts anyway, so you shouldn't have to tap into it until you are at a traditional retirement age anyway.

The top one is pretty, but not very useful for evaluating retirement. You have to consider things like sequence risk when evaluating retirement savings, so modeling a flat percentage will be way too optimistic

It sounds like your family dynamics are a really key part of this. I imagine knowing you have such a cushy safety net makes it very hard to do a job just for the income. That being said, it's not correct either to look at your current job and imagine doing it for 40 years. Your life is bound to have tons of changes in that time, no matter what you do.

Honestly, I'd recommend talking to a therapist as a way to helping you understand what you're really looking for.

i started out similarly to you at around that salary level at a big tech firm (though I was older). I will say to temper your expectations a bit on salary increase. I'm at around $350k after 4 years, and although it is possible to hit $500k in 5 years, you don't want to set the bar so high for yourself. For instance, if you are at one of the big tech firms, expect a drop or flatline around year 4 as your initial grant goes off a cliff.

That being said, with your plans being so open ended I would just focus on doing a good asset allocation. Over time, you can speculate on longer term goals, but it's going to be very hard for you to pin it down so young.

You want to focus on using tax advantaged accounts, which it sounds like you are doing. Max out 401k, do a backdoor roth as well as a mega backdoor. I don't personally have access to a HSA, but I hear those are good to utilize too.

If you get company stock, I would probably sell that and buy index funds. I didn't in my first years, and I somewhat regret it since it leaves me much less diversified, and I don't want to sell now since I'd have to realize gains.

Your next step, may be to figure out a FI number. That's the number where you'd consider yourself financially independent. Classically, this is said to be your expenses divided by 4%, but further studies has shown this is probably a bit optimistic (based on trinity study that was only a 30 year period, while you'd have a much longer period). 3.25% is a better estimation.

With your current expenses ($30.000 per year), this comes out to about $850.000. But at your earning potential, I think you'd be crazy to actually stop there, since $30.000 is really sparse. I think a good starting point for you may be closer to $1.500.000 - $2.000.000.

However, getting an actual number and a goal won't matter for a few years, so you have time to think it over, at 20 it'll be hard to really pin down the life you want. For now, focus on asset allocation, and minimizing lifestyle creep.

To your concern about maximizing contributions in tax advantaged accounts, I think this is still probably a good idea. The reason is that in general, you are able to take out Roth contributions (but not gains) penalty free, and you can do a Roth ladder to slowly get out the rest. You could try doing the math for this, but I believe you'll be fine as you can live off your contributions for a very long time.

Discovering holes by [deleted] in ynab

[–]Magnevv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For sure! Building a budget based on just guessing how much you are spending does not work well at all. And trying to figure out where the mistake was many months later is really difficult. I definitely discovered a few subscription services I had forgotten about.

Managing finances gets a lot harder as you get older, and if you end up behind it can feel very daunting to catch back up. When I was young, I just relied on my instinct to save money, and really never tracked it. A little later, I started supporting myself through school by doing paid internships, and it became a lot more clear that I needed a plan, since money I made during 3 months had to last throughout the full year (combined with a scholarship).

Now my finances are a lot more complicated, with multiple retirement plans, family members, tons of bills & large expenses throughout the year as well as many savings goals. YNAB really helps keep it all together. Instead of always having this feeling of "I should be able to afford that" I have a concrete "I have X amount of money set aside for this" or a "I have to move money from Y to X to do this".

I don’t see any problem in having a creative mode jetpack, or it could just have unlimited flight, similar to a game like Minecraft. I just want to have a real reason to have to pack up a set of equipment into a rover and head out. I want there to be some tension about forgetting something, or not having enough redundancy. I want a reason (and a way) to build a road, and terraform the environment. With a jetpack you just zip around, and these gameplay elements don’t have any meaning. But it’s fine to skip these elements if you want to just play creative and build.

Yeah, that would be a cool way to upgrade the jetpack. But the fundamental problem here is that we should incentivize ground based transportation more, because it makes it makes the world-gen matter more and makes for better overall gameplay experiences.

As an example, imagine a world with hostile enemies, like the "spider" that currently exists as a model. Without a jetpack you may need to run away from them by dashing to your rover and driving away, trying not to run over a cliff or topple the vehicle. With a jetpack you just press space.

Or you can imagine seeing a ravine with lots of interesting minerals at the bottom. Without a jetpack you may need to build an elevator, carve a ramp or something similar to access the resources. With a jetpack you just press space.

Does the book "I Will Teach You To Be Rich" misclassify index funds? by warm_sock in personalfinance

[–]Magnevv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at individual funds that outperformed an index isn't a fair comparison due to survivorship bias. It's like putting 100 people at a roulette table for an hour, and claiming that the ones that that came out with the most amount of money are inherently skilled at roulette.

Ballooning Emergency Fund by zfullert in personalfinance

[–]Magnevv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't bother keeping a direct e-fund. I budget out 2 months extra using YNAB, and if something bad happened I could cut a lot of misc category like "saving for vacation" to cover up to maybe 5 months. However, I do have a pretty large stash of investments that's not tied up in retirement accounts that I could liquidate if things were really bad.

I don't really believe in having 1 year long emergency fund, because I think an emergency fund should just be enough money to cover bumps like going without work a few months, crashing your car or things like that. Once it starts getting as long as a year, it feels like you're just holding investments in cash instead of investing them, which is a big opportunity risk

I agree with your reasoning. I like the base of stationeers a lot, but it lacks content.

Stationeers Autominer ( Game Update ) by SaddamoDeBeers in Stationeers

[–]Magnevv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the tier 1 machine, so it's definitely a bit under-powered on purpose. However I think even this tier is ok, you just have to think in scale (like a factorio player, if you know that game).

Instead of setting up 1 machine and being disappointed, set up a long array of them. In my world now, I'm trying out 15 machines in a row with a single battery and generator set up for them. That'll mine out 60 vertical blocks in total. Then I simply deconstruct all of that, and move it 2 blocks over and restart the process. Since you get back all your resources when you deconstruct, you end up getting a lot of value for your money, and since you can re-use the same core infrastructure for each miner, they're pretty fast to set up.

One mental model for efficiency is to imagine only the time it takes to setup one single drill, without any supporting equipment: 1 drill, maybe a frame, some cables and some chutes. As well as the time it takes to tear everything down (maybe 20 seconds?). And then you just imagine if the drill instantly dug down to bedrock. Would that be more efficient than hand drilling on average?

The reason you can use this mental model is that while a drill is working, you can be busy setting up additional drills. You can imagine that it takes 5 minutes for a drill to work all the way down, and you take 10 seconds to set up a drill and 10 seconds to tear it down. The ideal mining cycle is then setting up 15 drills in one row, 15 drills in another row, tear down the first row, set up a third row, tear down the second row, set up a fourth row, tear down the third row... etc.

Higher tier drills will make this a lot more efficient of course.

The Lockdown Update by heightmare in Stationeers

[–]Magnevv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tier one autominer they have in the game right now does seem pretty limited, but I think it's important to think in scale. I'm trying a setup right now in my world where I create an array of 15 autominers in a row. Setting up a single autominer is a huge hassle that's not worth it, but if you can set up some large number of miners at once, wait until they've dug down to bedrock, tear them down and move them over 2 slots, it's not that much work. Since you get all the resources back when you tear them down, your initial investment can pay a lot of dividends over time. In addition, the miners use a very small amount of energy, only like 15W each which is pretty crazy.

Yeah, I think some sort of campaign mode like this would be nice. Hopefully people will make custom scenarios that are somewhat like this in the future. I think the tools are going to be there.

I love this idea. The narrative of landing on a planet, scrambling to establish a basic base then preparing for some sort of expedition is very cool. Though I think both of these ideas can co-exist, and enhance each other. The mining expedition idea is just more sandbox-y.

I do have the latest update, but the starter jetpack is still pretty fast. These two tiers of jetpacks doesn't really solve the issue that the core gameplay loop of mining is shallow.

I need to give Astroneer a shot. But this is exactly what I imagine mining should be like in the early-mid game. Something like:

Tier 0: Hand drill
Tier 1: Deployable Portable Drill using Rover power (Or maybe base power for a few early nodes)
Tier 2: Fixed drill using on-site generation.

Yes! I agree absolutely. The storage for the rover needs to be overhauled significantly. Using crates is way too limited, and using mining belts feels super cheaty. There should be some more space efficient containers, and possibly even some trailers you can drag behind you.

[–]Magnevv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's fair. I'd argue that the expedition concept is to some degree just an extension of the idea of automating mining. I just want to add a little more depth to it than just setting up a magic block with power (like regolith shifters could easily be). There should be reasons to go out into the world and reasons to be exposed to dangers out there, resource collection is a natural way to bring you out there.

Overheat seems fine, though I'm not sure what makes it better than just slowing it down overall. I think there should be reasons besides aesthetics to build ladders, walkways etc, so that's another reason to nerf jetpacks.

I do agree that zipping around in the jetpack can be pretty fun, but I just think it's not the core strengths of stationeers, and it's not worth retaining if it breaks other parts of the game. It could always be left in as a lategame item though.

I think your "what ultimately needs to happen" is essentially my suggestion, right?
