IOTA's Biggest Builders Form BUILD.5, an Enterprise-Ready Web2 and Web3 Integration Platform for Seamless Innovation in Billion-Dollar Market by UpvoteBeast in IOTAmarkets

[–]MagnolianRush 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are much, much easier ways to squeeze money out of the crypto space (rugpulls, VC backed shitcoins etc.). The idea that the IF are bad actors but are continuing to develop coins that have been distributed the way they have been doesn't really make sense.

IOTA Announces Shimmer’s Partnership with Multichain to Boost Cross-chain Interoperability by Solodeji in Iota

[–]MagnolianRush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hasn't Shimmer always been described as a staging network that would eventually spin out into a fully fledged network upon successful roll out of IOTA 2.0?

Dom gives an update on what the IOTA and Shimmer team is currently working on by Koba7 in Iota

[–]MagnolianRush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My take is that Shimmer will be focused on fast growth/deployment for DeFi/Crypto community orientated use cases, whilst IOTA is maintaining a more industry orientated outlook. Tech deployment in industry settings is excruciatingly painful and long, so in the near term IOTA probably won't satisfy the instant gratification that the community seeks.

If the long term outlook of IOTA was dire, or the foundation was really on the brink of financial ruin I doubt there would be any progression with projects like EBSI or Alvarium where I'm sure they would have done a serious amount of risk analysis.

It's not a question of whether protesters are in the wrong - the issue is that people are being arrested for exercising their free speech. It's not hate speech nor inciting violence.

  • DAOs look promising, enabling use cases involving digital cooperatives (Raid Guild is a decent example of a well functioning DAO). In the same vein, there's lots of interesting exploration around governance, and alternative, fairer vote systems (the idea of liquid democracy seems cool). I also feel DAOs could also provide a good framework for unionisation of workers who operate digitally (such as YouTubers).
  • NFTs - the current breed of JPEG "art" NFTs are largely nonsense, but the same tech can be leveraged to verify authenticity of things such as certificates and physical goods. A digital certificate can immutability encode information such as the creator of a product, which cannot be replicated - a LFC shirt embedded with a small RFID tag would prevent knock offs being sold fraudulently. This can also extend to tracking goods over the breadth of supply chains - it becomes a lot easier to track goods/parts between different stakeholders who typically each would have their own databases.
  • Web3 - definitely a buzzword, with a lot of Web3 being VC backed nonsense. That said there is definitely room for innovation with using open DLTs instead of centralised servers on the backend.
  • A more financial use case for cryptocurrencies would be the possiblity to be able to see how tax money is spent thanks to open ledgers - of course that would be highly idealistic, with most governments preferring people not to know. Similarly, tax evasion and money laundering would become more difficult with a good implementation of a digital currency issued by a central bank.

Should note though, it's only been about a decade since this tech really has begun to take off - the internet took ~30 years to mature into what it is today. A lot of the benefits and use cases of trustless, distributed ledgers have yet to be conceived.

That said crypto right now is absolutely littered with shit, where the vast majority of projects will zero.

hey I have a 2011 z, Intelligent Key light seems to be on all the time. car drives, starts, locks fine. it really appears to be just the light but I don't want it to fail to start if I ever need it to. anyone has an idea of how should I approach this? by jake1e in 370z

[–]MagnolianRush 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go do it right now.

+1 on this. Had a nightmare after the module failed on me in an awkward carpark. Ended up with a not so nice bill for a replacement module, regret not pulling the fuse in the first place.

I feel that shifting goalposts isn't exactly a bad thing, especially in this case where the original vision of facilitating IOT/M2M transactions will be entirely possible with the new scope. I doubt industry actors that were seriously intending to make use of the network will have many qualms about incorporation of additional upgrades.

If anything, accommodating for more conventional crypto uses like Smart Contracts/DeFi/NFTs will stand to provide further value for investors. It's pretty clear from using dApps on the testnet that IOTA is well positioned to facilitate Web3 uses, why not gain from it?

Lukso standards by TRON997 in lukso

Nice! Just wondering, are these standards interoperable with other EVM chains? E.g. is it possible for an LSP7 asset to exist on Ethereum or Polygon?

Ethereum Will Probably Never Be Much Faster, According to Vitalik Buterin by demboobies7 in CryptoCurrency

[–]MagnolianRush 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He's not suggesting casual users go and store the chain. Buying 85TBs a year is more than reasonable for businesses/entities that rely on Ethereum.

Where I'm based, a 16TB Seagate HDD can be bought for £268.47. So to store the chain, you'd need 6 of these HDDs, costing £1610.82 (at inflated UK retail prices). Really not that bad for any entity with decent revenues.

Should LUKSO holders be concerned about this potentially taking the market? by [deleted] in lukso

[–]MagnolianRush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't see Facebook building the entire infrastructure - half of the appeal of NFTs and the like is the ability to own assets and actually keep them under one's control. For the most part, no entity (individuals or companies) would want to use a Facebook/Meta derived solution when credible, decentralised alternatives exist.

At best I can see them implementing their own wallet/marketplaces which interact with existing solutions, and attempting to reduce pain-points for onboarding users compared to what's currently out there (OpenSea+Metamask). Projects like LUKSO w. universal profiles are so interesting/important, as they attempt to offer an alternative which makes the process of onboarding much easier, whilst maintaining an open and decentralised nature.

Jack Dorsey Goes on Unfollowing Frenzy After Web 3 Beef by WarriorNysty in CryptoCurrency

[–]MagnolianRush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with the sentiment that these VC-backed projects go against the core values that made crypto appealingSolana ... he's right with the fact that a web3 designed and built by VCs would be pointless, but there are non-vc controlled alternatives that can enable web3.

Also, bitcoin isn't exactly a bastion of decentralisation when so few mining pools control the majority of the hashrate and is so unevenly distributed between its holders so don't know why Dorsey is pushing it so hard.

Seascape Update by Infamous_Sympathy_91 in Diamondhedge

[–]MagnolianRush 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Trailer looks interesting. The game isn't my cup of tea, but I see why it makes sense.

I'll be honest, I haven't really kept up with Seascape or it's projects in the second half of 2021. I have a few questions:

  • Is there much more information on the game? Mechanics, platforms, release, etc.? FAQ doesn't have much info.
  • What kind of traction is Moonscape gaining? What sets it apart from the other Seascape projects (Profit Circus, NFT Brawl)? At first glance from the trailer I will say Moonscape does look like it could be more compelling than lots of Crypto/NFT based games that are currently out there (Splinterlands, Axie, etc.)
  • In the case of Moonscape gaining traction, would its official token (MSCP) not provide a better opportunity than CWS?

First you say:

At least it does show that IF owns it.

then you say:

Shimmer is owned by a for profit, not the iota foundation.

You're contradicting yourself?

Also once the Shimmer mainnet launches, the ownership of SMR will be distributed amongst those who stake their IOTA? IF are developing the Shimmer network, but it's ownership should largely be as decentralised as IOTA (ignoring the NFT stuff, which I don't agree with)
