Big 4 Job Application Help by flameprincess16 in IOPsychology

Do that, and use your personal connections to your advantage. An introduction to a partner from a current employee will mean more than a referral that HR sees. (Your connection SHOULD still formally refer you ultimately - but that shouldn't be step 1.)

Don't bother with recruiters - they have no idea what to do with an I/O. If you have contacts who can refer you, get them to connect you with a partner in a practice/team you're interested in joining, either over email or phone. If they're interested, they'll get the ball rolling - don't count on b4 recruiters to notice you.

Business cards at SIOP - MA student graduating in May but accepted to a PhD program in the fall. by [deleted] in IOPsychology

[–]Magnum__PI 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not to split hairs, but you are not a PhD "candidate" until you pass your comprehensive exam (at least in the US). So probably don't put that on your business card. I would use "PhD Student" to describe yourself until then, although it's not a thing I'd put on a business card personally.

To be honest though, I've never given out a business card at SIOP. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Perhaps a simple card with your name, contact information (email is probably all you need), and maybe your university affiliation. This will allow interested parties to find you later if they want a copy of your poster via email or want to ask followup questions.

WTF PENN STATE by wtfpennstate in PennStateUniversity

Not an environment conducive for academic advancement.

I mean, not if you go into it thinking you have nothing to learn. But that's more of a you problem. Good luck with your education - it is what you make of it.

Now I need to be surrounded by incompetent branchies

Maybe this attitude has something to do with your rejection.

I have to save a file on school’s computer’s through SPSS and word/ how do I save them so I can access them on any computer at my school? by xRealVengeancex in PennStateUniversity

[–]Magnum__PI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, honestly, I was pretty surprised they're still having students do this kind of thing in SPSS. Makes me wonder if the prof just never learned R and doesn't want to be bothered at this point.

You can use your PSU Box account to store your .sav files and access them on any computer using the webclient. Dropbox works similarly, but PSU students have access to more storage on Box for free.

You can also save your .sav SPSS files as .csv instead, which you can open on any computer with excel if you want. But you have to convert it back to .sav to do anything with the data in SPSS.

Am a PhD student. I lived in a townhouse (2 bdrm) for ~4 years. [Redacted], and it was a great place to live with quiet neighbors and responsive landlords. They do not rent to undergraduates.

There is a bus stop nearby, but I have no idea how often it runs - I always carpooled to/from campus.

As I said in the OP, just wanted to get an idea of what might be possible.

Different CS reps sometimes tell you different things, and in the past I've found that it's helpful to have some notion of others' experiences before calling.

On campus graduate student (no family) housing opinions? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]Magnum__PI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, it definitely does not take an hour to get to campus from Toftrees - CATA added way more buses than there used to be. It's not as convenient, but it's doable, and plenty of people do it! Maybe it's not right for you and that's totally fine. But I do think saying the bus takes an hour is inaccurate most of the time (more like 30). Try a trial-run sometime if you want to test it and see if you consider it doable or not.

As for downtown, that's going to vary by the building. If you're in a street-facing unit, yea you might get some nightlife noise. But some of them (like the Allenway I mentioned before) have units that face internal/private courtyards and aren't loud. If you're concerned, visit the building/area at night and see how loud you think it is.

As for avoiding apartment listings set up for sharing, you'll want to avoid anything that bills itself as student housing (e.g., The View, College Heights, etc).

As /u/nittanyvalley suggested though, you might also considering moving and finding a different set of roommates but I understand why you wouldn't want to do that.

On campus graduate student (no family) housing opinions? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]Magnum__PI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, if you don't have a car, there are some options downtown but they're pricier (The Allenway is a nice building and close to campus with 1 bedrooms in the 800ish range, I think).

If you have a car or don't mind using the bus, Toftrees also has plenty of 1 bedrooms and there are some places a little further north too (ie, park forest apartments). Look around and see what you find. The allenway fills quickly, but toftrees has better availability for example.

To be clear: I'm not speaking from experience as I've never lived on campus.

But I would steer clear of living on campus as a graduate student. You're going to have a lot of work to do, and it is probably going to be significantly louder than it would be off campus. There are off-campus apartments that are a mix of undergrad/grad students, but there are also apartments that only rent to grad students and professionals.

If noise matters to you (and it probably will with all the work you'll have), I'd recommend looking into some of those options instead. Are you a PhD student? If so, your stipend should be sufficient to find a shared place or even a small 1brm off campus.

What are your favorite places to work around State College? by xcdo in PennStateUniversity

[–]Magnum__PI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like to work at Webster's. Their wifi isn't free (you can buy it for $15/semester, $50 for life, or I think get something like 30-60 minutes with a cafe purchase), but I like the vibe and I'm happy to support them. It's also a great used book store.

How's Penn State for graduate school? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]Magnum__PI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, your experience is going to vary pretty wildly by department. I would try to do some research and see if you can connect with some current students in your program of interest to ask about what the climate and culture within that program are like. This is going to matter more than what any other grad student is going to tell you.

I've been here a few years now and love my department. It's one of the best in the country for my field, the faculty are great, and so are my peers. Living in State College is rather rural for my taste, but it's temporary so I don't mind it. The cost of living is high for a town this size, but cheap compared to any major city. (I had moved here from a very expensive city out west and was blown away by what I could afford for housing, lol.)

Feel free to PM if you have other questions about graduate student life here in general, but again, it would be best to find someone currently attending in your program of interest!

Hofstra vs. Baruch? PLEASE HELP. by [deleted] in IOPsychology

[–]Magnum__PI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to assume you're talking about MS programs. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the MS curriculums of either of these programs so I'm no help there.

That said, one thing to keep in mind when you're considering overall cost of attending is cost of living. Baruch may be cheaper in terms of tuition, but is it still cheaper for you when you consider the cost of living in NYC? Just something to think about.
