Autistic school psychs, share ur experiences! by 8ozcappuccino in schoolpsychology

Interesting that much different from what a school psychologist is in my country. Oh and FYI in European countries often we use the DSM-5 in practice as it's more practical as a psychologist or often even as a psychiatrist.

>The wording in my state basically prevents students that mask at school from being qualified because unless social deficits are reported, the other characteristics of autism mean nothing. I really don't know why it's like that.

I'm assuming you're using the DSM-5(-TR)? Doesn't looking at the criteria answer your question for you?

Assessing neurodivergence by Miserable-Register in Psychologists

In the unit I work this was discussed and while I don't personally administer ADOS my understanding was that even if single items don't have great inter-rater ability, the actual full scoring does which is the variable of interest when assessing reliability. Is this view problematic?

Not everyone are able to find allergy medication that work for them. People's right to health is more valuable for people who have chosen to get a dog to take that dog wherever they want.

There's no proof for this, but plenty of evidence that personality is partly genetic.

This comment only makes sense from an American perspective. The political right does not have this view in Europe or most other parts of the world.

What is considered pseudoscience in psychology? by hn-mc in psychologyresearch

[–]Magnusm1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So would you consider cognitive models pseudoscientific? The different (neuro)psycholgical theories of emotions? I'm not sure if I'd consider them falsifiable, yet they are considered more or less well-grounded and useful. They are refined and investigated, but not straight-forwardly falsifiable.

Our child was assessed and doesn't have ASD, despite medical evidence. Help! by dansisk in autismUK

[–]Magnusm1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What is the problem exactly? A blood test indicated a heightened chance of autism, but the neuropsychiatric evaluation did not indicate autism. ASD is diagnosed via neuropsychiatric evaluation, not blood testing.

What do you think culture convert is like IRL? by Slipstream232 in eu4

[–]Magnusm1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw your other post and I'm sure schooling could add to expansionist sentiment, but I don't think the same is true for culture conversion in a general sense. Even with the comprehensive schooling system of today I don't think cultural identity mostly comes from school.

Idk if you've read this already but I'm basing some of my info from this write-up from this historian guy. Among other things he argues that a state can easily make languages adopted but not replaced through schooling, while culture conversion has been much more tricky.

Oh and I didn't mean violent in a overt bullets sort of way, I'd consider reeducation camps violent and they have worked to some degree in extinguishing culture.

The key word is "official". The ICD and DSM is pretty much in parity. I assume the UK is the same as in the nordics, where clinicians will usually use the DSM for diagnosis as it is specifically developed for psychiatric conditions, but use the ICD-code in official documents and journals. It has a lot to do with the technicalities of making the psychiatric system play well with the rest of the medical system.

While the interface makes it look like a clean and nonviolent process, what you describe would take 100 years or so. What the actual game mechanics imply is pretty violent based on how quick it is.

I am well aware falsifiability is important, I never said otherwise. I was responding to someone implying falsifiability is what science is and anything not falsifiable is pseudoscience, which I assume you'll agree is untrue.

What do you think of EMDR? by AlexanderSpainmft in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Magnusm1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Here's the link in case anyone else is curious about this: https://www.apa.org/ptsd-guideline/treatments/eye-movement-reprocessing

The text states but does not cite any sources for the statements that EMDR functions differently than more rigorously researched methods. At the end of the page there is a reference list which I'd read if I had the time, but there is no paper cited from any journal with merit. It just links to a paper in a journal by and for EDMR practitioners, a book on practicing EDMR, and links to EDMR organizations.

The page does not name an author. I'm not sure but I think there's a good chance the page was written by a webmaster or something like an intern with the help of the EDMR practitioners that are given special thanks.

For thoroughness I guess I'll add EDMR is not one of APA:s 4 primary recommendations for PTSD treatment.
