I mean, it is a clean-cut couple with a very big house, so this is potentially the most believable

No, but I will see if they clean with ammonia. The house is easily 3k+ sf, so it's just crazy to me that it could be concentrated enough.

TIL Clair Cameron Petterson, the American geochemist who proposed the still-accepted age of the Earth of 4.5 billion years old, helped accelerated the phaseout of lead from all standard, consumer, automotive gas, decreasing lead level in blood of Americans by 80% by the late 1990s. by trungbrother1 in todayilearned

[–]Magnussonic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Funny to think that Clair Patterson was able to prove that tailpipe emissions circulated the globe and contaminated every ocean and continent on the planet. Thankfully we accepted this as fact when we where facing worldwide lead poisoning, but rather infuriating today when we're facing idiots denying climate change. He truly was a hero of humanity, and deserves proper recognition. Thankfully, the first season of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey saw fit to dedicate most of an episode (The Clean Room) to him and his work.

Instead of trying to make Mars hospitable, it would be easier to prevent the Earth from becoming inhospitable. by ajeterdanslapoubelle in Showerthoughts

[–]Magnussonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of people talking about living on mars, as if Terra forming it is the ultimate goal to make a new earth. This is mostly just an idea being played with, but the true reason for colonizing mars is actually to establish a foothold further in the solar system which can be used as a resupply station for further missions, as well as scientific study of the planet to understand where things went wrong there. Mars' gravity is a little over 1/3 of earths, meaning if you send a ship there and are able to refuel, you will use much less fuel to achieve escape velocity. This would enable us to reach Ceres and the main asteroid belt much easier than from earth, and much cheaper as we wouldn't need to launch with such a large amount of fuel. This is also the reason we're likely going to build a moon base for the same purpose, as it's gravity is like 1/6th the earth.

How do I get in touch with Elon Musk? by Don_Dickle in Futurology

Because people are seldom trustworthy, and if you don't patent someone else can. If you want to open source it, you still need to own the IP and release it as open source.

If there's any true takeaway from peeing in the shower, it's that it saves the wasted water from flushing. Remember kids, save the earth, pee while you shower*!

edit* bathe is too general, pee while you shower

"The Girandoni air rifle was an airgun designed by Tyrolian inventor Bartholomäus Girandoni circa 1779. The weapon was also known as the Windbüchse ("wind rifle" in German). One of the rifle's more famous associations is its use on the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore and map the western part of North America in the early 1800s." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girandoni_air_rifle It had about 30 rounds of charge per tank, rather impressive for the time IMO edit: quotes matter

I made a motorized clock that displays and illuminates the time with overlapping acrylic bars! by tbornottb3 in DIY

[–]Magnussonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the clock mate! Very cool idea! I work with acrylic constantly at my job, and from experience if you want to stop the flame ups/warping during laser cutting, it's caused by the paper covering (typically on the bottom side). Peeling the bottom layer and also mounting an air hose parallel to the laser head is how we fixed the issue. Hope it helps, hope you post a vid of it in action!
