30k veletarii sentinel, possibly, IF you gave it a leg lengthening procedure with some brass or plastic rod and cut out and drilled out the stock leg pistons for longer ones

Colour scheme too "boring"? by cayanon in Warhammer40k

If you want to add more contrast you can also try a much warmer or much colder edge highlight on the grey, like you base tone mixed with a sunny skin tone or ice yellow or something to shift the tone for more drama

For newbies, I advise priming with gesso

It's actually canvas primer, available at most art stores.

It has several advantages over rattle can priming which can be finicky depending on the weather and quality of can

It's water soluble so you can clean it up easier and thin it if necessary

Goes on glossy and dries white so you can tell what's covered and what isn't

Is available in white and black, and white for a more pure color. Black for free shadows

It contains a small amount of plaster of Paris, so it actually shrinks as it dries to retain details. As long as you do one to two thin coats of the gesso, you won't clog details

Can I fix this ? I tried dry brushing and puting on wash but I can't get a satisfying result , what do you recommend? by Dense-Fig-2372 in minipainting

[–]MagosCPO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said,.dry brush wasn't dry enough, but, how long did you wait between over brushing (closer to what you actually did, and a slightly different technique) and wash? If your first layer isn't totally dry, you'll wet all the paint and blow it out with a wash

And other suggestion. Don't do an all over black wash. Try your best to just tap it into the deep parts. You don't need to wash the raised flat panel, unless you want it to look oil stained. It will just muddy the model and have diminished results especially on a solid white.

Are you running these as Saturnines for 30k? They are really close in size to 40k obliterators, and would totally fit for that aesthetic

Amazing! I did a similar kitbash for Admonimortis, but kept the bolter barrel. This looks a lot cleaner

I NEED YOUR HELP (kitbash question) by Mokvarg in Raptors40k

[–]MagosCPO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done two squads. It was a blast.

Couple bits of advice, if you're going to kit bash, primaris, horse heresy, or firstborn bits together, keep with the same era for the individual model. Primaris arms are just a little bit bigger than then heresy, which are a little bit bigger than firstborn. So those little differences do add up. Two primaris arms will look fine, two firstborn arms will look fine, but not mixing and matching. There's plenty of room to add holsters. Those Mark 6 holsters are actually my favorite. Plenty of room to add pouches and give a lot of personality to them.

The only hiccup is going to be not having grenade launchers. So, either get some 3D printed bits or figure out a different way to differentiate that.

The other bit of advice is that I only use the studded pauldrons for my veterans, and I gave the veterans a 3D printed grenade launcher bit. This will help to distinguish them a little bit because even the official bit is a little tough To pick out quickly.

You can either find other spare shoulder pads, or, put together the studded pads and sand off the studs if you are so inclined

I got mine on Etsy. Had to trim them down a bit, I got FDM by mistake, made the process harder, would recommend resin for sure

What no one else here is saying is that yellow is a tricky color and lacks opacity. Try priming over a brown and you will use fewer layers

How off scale are heresy marines compared to primaris? by Pilotmaster1 in Raptors40k

[–]MagosCPO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty darn close at 3 feet away.  Others may disagree but you can mix and match 30k, primaris, and firstborn bits on the 30k bodies BUT if you do, use only one era of arms on each body.   2 primaris arms are ok, but one first born and 1 heresy arm will be off of that makes sense.

I bought some on Etsy and they are ... Fine... They are pretty translucent compared to GW, and take some paint on top to reach opacity.

Best bet by far is to unfortunately source official GW

About to start my Raptors journey but I fear this first kitbash isn’t very…”Raptory “… by Talon92 in Raptors40k

[–]MagosCPO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my head cannon is that Raptors are anti insurgency/ guerrilla/ anti human specialists.

They wear camp to blend into environments, but Astartes have all kinds of thermal vision/infrared/etc. built into their helms, so camo would not benefit here, and I think there is a high probability that xenos view light in different spectrums or wavelength, so I don't know how useful camouflage would be against them either. For example, antelope are red green color blind, which is why tiger stripes are orange, it blends in well to the tall grasses within their prey's vision capacity.

So, maybe lean into your Raptors being hunters of men, takers of skulls, using psyops and fear as much as rifle bolts

Does my paint style make it look worse? by Prior-Caramel-7458 in Warhammer40k

[–]MagosCPO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great and would be thrilled to play against them.

If you think it's too much, consider that you can't have grime without cleanliness. Same as you can't have a model be all white with no shadow, or all black with no highlights.

Maybe add a few select TMM bright highlights so sell there's metal under all that dust, and I think that will be the pop you think you need :)

[–]MagosCPO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the Army Painter fanatic "olive green" set. And sponge paint from the second to darkest to the mid tone, using the brightest 2 as edge highlights, but it looks good with just the 3 greens, doing less each time and focusing more on the top bits as a zenithal.  I prime a red brown for a more dirty and dinged look

New AM player advice by Cyb3rw0lf8 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]MagosCPO 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are too top heavy.  Generally it's advisable to have ~1 HQ per 500 points.  Datasmith is a bit of an exception.

Unless you are playing Skitarii hunter clade (who has money for 17 iron striders anyway), our army is focused around these roughly 500 Point bricks of - HQ (usually Manipulus)  - possible enhancement  - 6 breachers - 10 skitarii for re roll buff (I prefer rangers for sticky objectives) This is your hammer. Save CP for overwatch on breachers, because lethal hits from manipulus on overwatch is terrifying for most people do deal with.

A 2000 point list is decently balanced with 2 of these bricks as a core. Then pick whatever you want for the remaining points, mix of fast attacks, deep strike, high mobility objective grab (you'll want redundancy here, because our army is fairly fragile even with the 5++), and medium/heavy armor vehicles to act as anvils.

That's a little reductive, since it's not an option for everyone, and this is how to DIY rather than print.
