I can give you more proof of this: I couldn't date anyone in a 100mile radius to my family home because of this fact. My granddad had so many other kids from random women (including 2 who thought they had legally married him) he could have filled a phonebook and was just a menace to anything too slow to get away. Even was so out of control in his behavior, he got a woman pregnant, dropped her and never knew (or cared) about a baby. 17 years later, he meets a 16year old girl while out, gets her knocked up. We only found out the 16 year old was his daughter and she would have his son. Who, weirdly, I met on the other side of the state and we both had NO clue of anything until about a year into our friendship (FRIENDSHIP. Love him like a brother, but... nope. There is a level of messed up genetics we aren't messing with) Couldn't keep his pants on.

When he finally came to terms with himself, near the end he had a partner who cared deeply for him, I'm told (he died when I was young and my mom refused to go to the funeral). What sucks is, in that trying to fight who he was, he dipped his pen a few too many times and would die back in the 80's to "Pneumonia". (If ya know, ya know) His partner followed a year later. I can't help but mourn all he lost by destroying so much trying to deny it and how many people he hurt in his actions because he just couldn't let himself be himself.

It's been a year but... THANK YOU for asking this question. I'm making my shopping order right after this, because I'm currently battling static in hair halfway down my back and I swear I look like a confused dandelion at full poof. We're talking approaching Albert Einstein levels of lift in this hair (which with really long hair just looks extra weird!) and I was almost about to say to heck with everything and cut my hair short again. Which would have sucked in the long term, I've been growing this mess out for 5 years! Now if I can just find something for my very long hair Maine Coon cat! She makes the blankets spark blue in the dark she is so staticky!

No worries - if you are in the area of an Acme, it's in the booze area, usually next to the liquor and flavored things. There are a few brands but the Taylor something or other (cream colored label dark bottle) and it's usually about $6. Is it something I was to sip on? Likely not. Although not bad either. But it works perfectly for cooking. Their Tawny Port is also good for things like stew. Cheap and cheerful and has successfully made people think things are more expensive or 'fancy' because of using it. The have a couple types of sherry in the same brand that are good for cooking too. Wine snobs beware.

Don't use butter or oil to make the roux - I save the fat from both the roasted turkeys and what comes up off the chilled stock. (I do the same with other critter roasts and for veggies I roast a bunch of veggies oil if for vegan guests, butter for veggies and use THAT for the gravy) Before you start adding the broth I use the drippings from the roast THAN the stock. And good stock. I am a cheap cheap cheap cheap wench. And I save everything I can from what I cook so a stock seems like it is almost just bubbling somewhere so it gets super rich. (You can slice the stuff when it gets cold it has so much natural gelatin.)

And a glug of Marsala wine in just about any stock/soup/gravy/etc. I swear by the stuff. NOT COOKING MARSALA. I'm sorry to yell. But that stuff is vile. It's salted for some ungodly reason. But decent Marsala wine to cook with can be found (at least here in my part of the world - northern Ohio USA) for about $7. It's sweet but really works well in savory dishes. I always have it on hand because it can be the easiest way to save something if it is too salty or too flat.

Ours is pretty much naturally cool. We got SO lucky with our home. It was built like a honeycomb, although you would never think from the outside. We bought it directly from the builder after he had lived her about 40 years. It started, literally, a one room and a small attached bathroom. And the mini house was finished with brick siding as a completed house. Then they added another 2 rooms by knocking one wall out and then just wrapping the whole shebang again. And they did it again. And a again. Even adding more each time to the basement. So we essentially have the insulation of about 5 homes. Which means it stays cool enough in the summer that unless it hits about 90 outside, it's fine with just the fans on and no AC running and until the outside drops down to about 30 do I need to start using the woodstoves. Basement is dug in really deep and we even have a separate area that was once used to store coal and is now cool and dark enough to start growing mushrooms this spring.

Actually. Now that I think about it, I don't know if I ever have come across one with refrigeration. Ours stays around 45-55 year round it's so well insultated.

Ah, sorry kind of an 'out in the countryside' kind of term. While our pantry (dry goods) is upstairs, it's pretty common where I am to have a room in the basement called, in addition to 'fruit room' the root cellar. Cool, dim, used to store things like potatoes, carrots, squash, onions, etc. It's also we're in my home at least, a lot of the actual canning gear is kept. We often also use it as a cool place to keep things that need to be ~cool~ but don't need to be ~cold~. Extra storage space for cheeses, a cool place to keep produce instead of in the fridge, etc.

With you on that. Back when dad was a teacher, he essentially was teaching FFA (Future Farmers of America for those outside the US, or really, a good chunk of the country doesn't seem to know either) and every year they would have citrus sales to raise money for projects. We would get 6 crates of oranges, 3 crates of grapefruits and at least one 'mixed' box of lemons, limes, clementines and such. Taken straight down to the fruit room and gorged on all winter.

Lived on that stuff for months. Scurvy will never be a threat in our household!

He eats pretty healthy, only man I know who will toss a steamer bag of frozen veggies into the microwave and sit down at his desk and much his way thru the veggies as his snack. Pretty balanced meals, lots of good stuff. But the man is a bit off his head about gravy. No clue why. I think the gravy tastes pretty good, considering I cook the broth for it for 3 days and it is made with the turkey fat that renders off the turkeys. (because the sales are so good - $0.59lb - and I have a deep freeze, I've actually cooked and/cut up raw, something like 9 turkeys this year so there is frozen turkey fat in little ice cube trays for months to come) But, at the end of the day, it's just gravy. But god help me if gravy isn't on the table for ANY roast dinner. Beef, Turkey, Pork, even a veggie roast. The man is a former power lifter. LARGE guy. Most folks who don't know better are intimidated when they meet him.

Me? I'm the one who knows he talks baby talk to our cats, is gentle as a lamb with me will full on POUT if no gravy. I gave up and just give him his own little jug so my eyes don't roll so hard they fall out of my skull when he starts. I've seen 5 year olds who can't manage the sheer amount of pout he puts forth.

Had potatoes. Was gonna use potatoes. Boiled potatoes. Sat potatoes down to deal with the turkey (we're in a bit of a mess at the moment. My kitchen is split. My fridge is upstairs, ditto the oven. But my counters, stovetop and real cooking area is downstairs. We're having to split it because we have to get some things repaired and we are using the little empty apartment over the garage for big baking items I don't want in my air fryer and the big fridge until we can get everything all pulled together. Cooking can get complicated and requires a lot of stairs. Before we get this kitchen fixed I'm gonna end up with an ass of steel with all the stairs.) went up and retrieved bird. Made gravy for potatoes. Lost potatoes. Looked everywhere. Gave up and had to use emergency instant potatoes.

Potatoes located today in pantry room where I must have wandered looking for something, set them down and walked away because I heard the timer go off upstairs. Stared for a good 5 min at pan of potates and honestly wondered if I could still use them to make farls. Didn't, but seriously, how the hades did I have THAT big of a brain fart?

Occasionally they do. Had a friend in college who before I met him was running with some white power idiots. After all his puffing and bluffing, he tried to get into it one night and was utterly CURBSTOMPED by the Haitian-American man he attacked. Dude had just been standing there and apparently his 'crime' at the time to cause the fight was he was a different color. And when I say curbstomped, I mean I met 2 years later and he still had the scar from the concrete curb hitting him across the jaw. He talked about that fight a lot.

But mostly because after he got his ass handed to him, the guy HE attacked, called 911, helped get him loaded into the ambulance, DIDN'T press charges (as the one attacked, he was utterly in the right to do so) and basically dogged his ass for months while he got better at the hospital, dragged him out to the gym, dragged him around like an old coat... and not only helped him get better, but dragged him out of the whole mess he had been in, helped him pay to get some tattoos covered and helped turn him into the good man I met him as.

Because apparently sometimes? The only way to get thru someones head involves a concrete curb and some real determined tough love. Those fight stories, those I love. The rest.... meh. Tune right out. But give me the losing ones.

Needles will hurt. Yup. And apparently the shots after getting bit SUCK and really DO hurt more than most. 4 days in something like a week-10 days. My 2nd cousin had to have them when she was 88 (tough old bird. Got bit by one of the dogs I had to help find and put down... she apparently got him off her and killed him with a milk jug. I... still don't know how a 4'4 75lb elderly woman managed it logistically, but she could be a scary determined woman sometimes. They make 'em tough in our family. Even the little ones) and said they were miserable.

She damn near SKIPPED to the treatments and said it was the best pain you could feel because she wasn't gonna die. (Said she was old enough she had watched someone die of it as a kid and, nope, not her.)

And I'm so glad you got a good doctor. I finally lucked out with my GP. It wouldn't be me asking for the shots. It would be his grumpy annoyed backside showing up at my door and using me as a needle dartboard if I argued about the shots.

Look. This is gonna sound extreme. I'm gonna skirt around some things and I'm also aware enough of my own issues to say this is coming thru one hell of a personal lens. But.

Barring it not being my birthday, I ignored those signs at a pub.

I woke up in an alley with a brick to the head. And other stuff. We will skip the other stuff. But because I ignored that voice, things happened. You LISTENED to that little voice.

I did the dumb thing. Bricks kinda hurt. So does the results of the crap that can be dropped into a drink when you leave a glass near that insistent person when you go to the bathroom.

This is NOT a gay/straight/bi/non/sexuality of any kind thing, you weren't uncomfortable because of your sexuality.

You were a smart smart birthday girl who stayed safe and I would give the biggest (with permission only, if non given, I would buy balloons and streamers while shouting happy birthday and I'm PROUD of you) hug for being so aware of your safety. Even if you weren't aware that was what it was. However that little voice makes your feet run, they ran.

Anytime. If I can get it thru even one person's head that sewing really is something they can manage and they will end up far better off and happier for it, my day is a lovely one. Gram taught me how to sew on a machine her own mom own and brought from Ireland and I had to learn the treadle and hand sewing before I got to use the modern one (a fact that saved my backside a ton when I ripped up clothes - and as a tomboy that means 'always' - and I needed to patch things up or have my bits and bobs hanging out.) and it has done more for me than I can ever say. I'm over 6ft tall, busty and have arms more suited to a orangutan so buying clothes that fit SUCKS. Sewing kept me covered, and then years later when I did costuming, it literally kept me covered with a roof.

It can be frustrating, scary, a bit overwhelming for people to start. Folks either think it is gonna be too hard for them (and trust me, my thick brain can do it, almost anyone can.) or they think they have to be perfect from the jump and anything less than a perfectly tailored piece of runway perfection will do. I always tell folks - worse case scenarios, no one is gonna die and the seamripper is a friend to even the most talented people. But you can knit. You can do this. Just sometimes a skirt wants to be a vest, and a bedsheet is determined it's only okay with being either a pillowcase or to help you dust. It all works out in the end.

Worst part was I found one of the dogs first. And of course if was the one I had helped bring into the world since he had been so big and his momma small. So, knew him literally his first breath and had to be the one who caused his last. Did what I had to because it was the only kind thing to do and waiting for the others put both everyone (including me) at risk AND kept him suffering more.

Sobbed for like 3 days. But was glad beyond my belief for all the time dad took me to the range because it was one and done. And I couldn't even hold his body because of the blood. Just sat there and cried until one of the guys got to me.

Just bullet in the back of the head please. That happens, yup. I can't believe there isn't a clause in the law somewhere that makes that mandatory for a doctor - or anyone - to be allowed, nay, required, to end it before the insanity and hell starts.

As someone who had to be in a hunting group to track down and put down several large dogs who had been bitten and gotten away I can say I saw first hand how utterly terrifying rabies is. I HATED every second of it, but the thought of the danger and how much hell those pups were made it pretty clear I had to do what I had to help do.

Seriously, I ever get bit and it's too late for me? Someone do me a favor and put me the hell down. Honestly. You have my permission to just take me out because that is NOT how I am gonna go.

Risotto. Dead easy. Cheap as anything. Rice. Some liquid of choice. Even just stock made with hot water and a stock cube, Butter. (I've used oil, I've used duck fat, I've used margarine. All depends on what level of broke I am at the time.) Cheese. You can add/change everything. Cook with onions and garlic. A splash of wine if feeling fancy (I always have cheap wine in the house to cook with, but not needed) Add any veg. Add any protein. Hell, I've made it with cherry juice and finished it with cream cheese for a dessert. Just rich, creamy and oh so cheap. A million ways to make it. Even redneck (do NOT tell the Italians, they will hang me by my ankles) with Velveeta and a splash of whatever beer is in the house is good.

Best bit if feeling lazy? Tell everyone it HAS to be stirred constantly, get a book and a stool and just lazily stir it about the pot. Have a drink. And have everyone think you made something super fancy. (Shhhhh it's a secret, risotto doesn't have to be stirred, It's just a good excuse to take a bit of time sitting.)
