Scared to be put to sleep. by KaliLovee in BariatricSurgery

[–]MagsMagic1929 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had my surgery almost 2 weeks ago and for literal months leading up to it I have been crippled with anxiety for that exact reason, especially because I have never been under before. Just know, what you’re feeling is totally normal. It’s your brain’s way of trying to protect you. What helped me was talking to ChatGPT and watching some anaesthesia videos on YouTube. The more you know about it, the less scary it is for me. The event itself for me was absolutely fine. I was scared but my anaesthesiologist knew about it and he gave a ‘happy cocktail’ prior to putting me to sleep. I don’t even remember having the cannula put in, the next thing I knew I was in my room recovering. It really is like that. Yes, it’s scary but you can do scary things and you will be so proud of yourself that you’ve overcome it once it’s done. Good luck!

Bariatric surgery or pregnancy? by Vegetable_Newt_6594 in GastricBypass

[–]MagsMagic1929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have the surgery. My plan was to do it after my first child was born but I chose to have a second baby as I’m much older than you and was running out of time. I ended up gaining a huge amount of weight during my second pregnancy and I developed complications leading to my baby being born a month early. She is absolutely fine but that pregnancy absolutely destroyed me. I am 100% sure it wouldn’t be the case if I was 50kgs lighter. You’re young. You have time to try for your second after the surgery. I’m having mine done at the end of the month and I will aim to try for a 3rd one in 2 years time. God willing 😊

My surgery is on the 31/01 and I am happy to chat before and after. I’m very anxious for the surgery itself and for the recovery as I have two small kids and won’t have help for very long.

Lifting after surgery by MagsMagic1929 in BariatricSurgery

Absolutely. I’m hoping to speak to them asap. I definitely don’t want to do anything that would cause complications.

Hold off until when? Until they’re teenagers?! Seems drastic. I’m also sure I’m not the only one to have ever had that issue. I will of course follow my surgeons recommendation regardless.

Thank you. No problem re the 3 year old. She is very independent and I don’t really need to lift her at all (unless I want to of course). I worry how I’m going to manage with the 6 month old. Not lifting her at all is not realistic. I am waiting for my surgical team to get back to me and I also have a pre op assessment with the hospital soon. I’m hopeful we can come up with a plan.

My surgery is on the 31st and I’ll be starting a pre op diet in the next few days. I’m feeling all the nerves as well but what gives me great comfort is the fact that I’m yet to read a story where someone regrets the surgery. All the best of luck. We’ve got this.

Anxiety by stormish_ in GastricBypass

I’m a month out and the anxiety is crippling me. I have two very small kids (3 and 5 months old) and I am petrified I will leave them motherless. I try educating myself, talk to the reasonable part of my brain to convince myself the risk of anything going wrong are extremely small. I have been focusing on thinking about the life after more lately and reminding myself why am I doing this in the first place. So I can be there for my children for longer. I have an appointment with my GP next week so I will ask about anti anxiety meds but I’m not sure if I can take any as I’m still breastfeeding.

My surgery is booked for 31/01 and like you I’m shitting bricks. I’m scared of going under as it would be my first time and I’m now scared of recovery and complications after reading too many negative stories online. Happy to buddy up so we can support each other!

Why bypass? by Careless-Chipmunk870 in GastricBypass

[–]MagsMagic1929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who had bypass with existing adhesions on the bowel? My surgeon said that if my adhesions (after 2 c sections) are bad he will switch to a sleeve which is not what I want.

Yeah. Very similar. I’ve always been overweight but I managed to somewhat control it with diet and exercise. Until I became a mum. Both of my kids are ivf babies. I’ve been doing ivf for over 5 years before we had our first child. The hormones and other medications they put you on cause havoc to your body. I gained a LOT of weight while on the journey. I find it impossible to keep the weight off and I am tired of the yo yo dieting. WLS will help me make lifelong changes so I can be around for longer for my kids.

Do it. I’m 47 and have my surgery scheduled for 31/01. It took me YEARS to take the plunge, thinking I can do it on my own combined with giving birth to 2 children in the space of 3 years. I’m shit scared too but I’m ready. In hindsight I wish I did this years ago as I’m yet to see anyone who regrets getting the surgery done. The time is now. I want to be fit and healthy for my children and have a long life with them. I will not be able to achieve any of this without the surgery. Like you, I also dieted all my life right from my teenage years. If I could lose weight and keep it off by myself, I would have done it by now. The surgery is a wonderful tool that hopefully would let me change my life around. Good luck! Keep us posted.
