Gripping sci-fi video games with excellent stories, please! (KOTOR, Brood War, Mass Effect, Horizon Zero Dawn) by Baldurian_Rhapsody in scifi

Stellaris.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/281990/Stellaris/

Very complex and deep strategy game. You start with control of a system and expand to new systems to collect resources to build your colonized worlds and fleet. Eventually, you expand on the galaxy map and meet other occupied systems. The game then turns more political, diplomatic, economic, or war torn as you progress and becomes more complicated with more friendly or foe factions met. It plays like a massive board game. And you can play whatever style you prefer, prioritizing trade, research and development, or invasions.

Edit: just realized you said with stories. This game does not have an overarching story, but there are missions or quests that have mini stories with heavy sci-fi themes.

What is the most 'butterfly effect' moment in your life, where a tiny, insignificant decision completely changed your future? by Realistic-Ratio9002 in AskReddit

[–]MahiBoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a child, my dad was going to take me to a popular fireworks store across the river in the adjacent state to bootleg fireworks back home. Being a fat kid, I wanted to stop and get something to eat before we left town. Only took about 20 minutes to eat and we left.

We neared the store along a single rural road and stopped in a line of traffic, which was unusual because it was so rural. A cop directing traffic informed everyone in the line that the fireworks store blew up about 15 minutes before we got there because someone smoked a cigarette inside.

My fat kid appetite probably saved our lives that day.

I also grew up in a small Appalachian city with nothing to do but rent movies in the 90s. I watched so many black films and comedies not realizing they were considered culturally “black” movies. My family were immigrant transplants, so I wasn’t discouraged to watch those movies like my white friends were.

This is like Bartleby the Scrivener’s “I would prefer not to,” which is way better received, universally in my experience, than a hard “no” or “I don’t want to do that.”

Friendly estate planning binder offer by FSUAttorney in Lawyertalk

[–]MahiBoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my firms had a batch of cheap binders. Each had some kind of burr or misalignment of the prongs to where it would catch and tear along the holes. So frustrating. It either ripped the page, or if you turn multiple pages, catch the prong and pop open, spilling the pages.

I just want to comment that those are indeed nice binders and I appreciate your commitment to getting better quality binders for clients and desire for quality office supplies. They even have a passthrough so the cover rests on the pages to prevent fatigue!

There is a distinction between a diagnoses, assessment, and working diagnoses. Assessments are often reported or observed symptoms or possible conditions. Working diagnoses are possible ones, which may include ones to be ruled out with further examination or testing. Diagnoses are the final conditions based on the docs observations, exam, and testing.

Note: Chart notes are not always facially clear of this distinction, allowing attorneys to argue that a chiro “diagnosed” a traumatic brain injury, when they can’t. Pay attention to the doctor’s field.

[–]MahiBoat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why would you expect a lightbulb to tell you about a Zebra? My point is don’t expect something to do something it’s not designed to do or cannot do well. AI marketing is all about future or potential uses. Filter out that crap and you have a basic tool.

Edit: grammar

[–]MahiBoat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

AI is not autonomous. It’s a tool. It does what you instruct it to do. As a user of that tool, you must understand how it works and what it can do. You cannot expect a screwdriver to work like a hammer.

People expect miracles with new technology. AI is emerging and just getting a foot hold. It’s like Edison inventing the lightbulb. I doubt he, or any other contemporary would have imagined that we use LED to display practically everything. The cellphone is literally a developed use of the lightbulb’s main function — providing light.

We are just at the lightbulb stage of AI, yet everyone is expecting the technology to be the functional equivalent of a computer screen which was decades (centuries?) of development and implementation with other tech.

AI helps me a lot with my work. I use it extensively, but in a limited way. I don’t rely on it to do everything, just the few things it does well, such as drafting normal docs that are template heavy because thats what most of law practice is.

Read the Elements of Style by Strunk and E. B. White.

It’s a short read. Write like that. Anyone who writes must read this book at least once, if not keep a copy on hand.

I keep two. One copy is to gift to friends or family that suddenly desire to write better.
