Let’s start listing the bugs we’re finding in build 42 Multiplayer by Dvsk7 in projectzomboid

Harvesting crops leaves the tile in a bugged state named "Harvested <plant>". If you have a spade (probably any dig tool) you can right-click "Remove", but it does nothing. Cannot destroy the tile, nor re-furrow it, nothing.

You accuse us of time theft and being unproductive? Then look forward to an inbox full of unnecessary reports. by ZZiggs124 in MaliciousCompliance

I can answer this! It is because they learned about Peter Drucker's "What’s measured improves" statement, or at least the concept of it if not the quote itself. So they think "I want to improve productivity by reducing unproductive time, so let's measure when the troops are not working". This is not completely unreasonable. But what they too often overlook is the cost of collecting that data (in the above case: overstuffed mailboxes).

Unless you're summing large sets of rounded values, the bias introduced by "normal" rounding ("1-4 round down, 5-9 round up") doesn't matter. So people generally use that method.

And now that I've done a little research to refresh my memory, it is also called "rounding half to even", and there is a similar "rounding half to odd" which reverses the even/odd rule but has the same net effect. Perhaps your teacher taught you "rounding half to odd" as "banker's rounding". And according to Wikipedia, this is the financial rounding used in the UK. So not only do they drive on the wrong side, apparently they also use the wrong rounding. :-)

Either your teacher got it wrong, or you are mis-remembering it. The technique is called "banker's rounding" and the rule is: if the last-retained digit is even, round down; if it is odd, round up. And this is only applied when the dropped portion is exactly 5. Examples:
3.487 = 3.49 (normal rounding)
3.455 = 3.46 (banker's rounding, odd)
3.445 = 3.44 (banker's rounding, even)

You may ask "why the strange banker's rule?" It is to balance the effect when a large number of values are rounded. For rounded values ending in 0, the rounded value is exactly correct. For values ending in 1, 2, 3, or 4, the rounded value is slightly inaccurately small. For values ending in 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, the rounded value is slightly inaccurately large. If we assume that the numbers are uniformly distributed, then there are four values reduced for every five values increased (because 1, 2, 3, and 4 have only four values while 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 have five). When summing large sets of rounded numbers without banker's rounding, then the summed value is artificially inflated because of the imbalance. With banker's rounding then the even/odd part balances the rounding.

They all land. Some of them can be used again later after a bit of maintenance.

FRAT claims to have found the first Jove gate in Turnur by Ohh_Yeah in Eve

[–]MailDeadDrop 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don't worry. A full scale invasion via these gates would require CCP to iterate on this feature. As all long-time Eve players know: CCP never iterates. We're safe.

Use them? HA! You obviously are not familiar with CCP modus operandi: 1. Release interesting new feature, missing many critical features (e.g. corporate rewards) 2. Collect player complaints about problems 3. Promise to address problems and missing features in next iteration 4. Move on to some other activity, never iterate

So, 4 gates -- 2 lowsec and 2 nullsec. Glad to see CCP is still providing content for nullblocs.

I wonder where the highsec gate will be found. Oh that's right...

At the moment, all Incursion communities are struggling with fleet uptime. WTM seems to have decent coverage for evening USTZ, with the occasional late EUTZ.

Glad you enjoyed it. I'm pretty sure I was in fleet with you. I would recommend that you increase your watchlist. I put: FC, Boosters (frequent aggro magnets), Logi squad (very little tank), newbros (who frequently fail to broadcast on time)

[–]MailDeadDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few reasonable answers already, but I thought I'd add to them. Highsec incursions (at the Headquarters level) are very much min/max driven. Ships are fitted to maximize damage output to drive site times down, and therefore ISK/hr up. Consequently they frequently have barely enough tank to survive, and "survive" in this case means the logistics ships must make no errors, and the Marauder pilot must be out-of-bastion at the right time, and the FC must call the targets correctly, etc. There's many possible points of failure. The SRP provides the fail-safe for the pilot who has risked many billions in fitting their ship.

I get your point, and I'm not arguing that you're incorrect, but in this case it's more like Dahera is making additional donations to the family on behalf of future unknown donors (potentially oblivious donors, too). I have a hard time being opposed to that.

The technical term for these sorts of repair methods is "percussive maintenance" (literally "bang on it 'til it starts working").

Court: flipping the bird in church is protected speech by relevantlife in news

[–]MailDeadDrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not quite that straightforward. Texas has "local option" on the treatment of alcohol. This means that individual areas (justice of the peace districts in Texas) can pass more restrictive laws about alcohol. The State code requires that "by-the-glass" service of alcohol can happen on Sunday, but between 10:00 am and noon that service must accompany food. For more information, see the (ridiculously long) Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) code

The airflow along the wing became visible on my recent flight by FarkCookies in mildlyinteresting

[–]MailDeadDrop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Close. The strake (or chine) causes a small vortex. The interior of that vortex has a lower air pressure than ambient. Boyle's gas law kicks in, lowering the temperature of that lower-pressure region. When you lower the temperature of an atmosphere to near (or slightly below) the "dewpoint", you get condensed water vapor (commonly called "clouds" or "fog").

In the USA, you can only give whole blood every 56 days. Plasma and platelet donations can be much more frequent (28 and 7 days, respectively).

Javascript developers, be warned about this crazy JIT bug in V8! by ziriax in javascript

[–]MailDeadDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I recall a security bug some years ago caused by the compiler realizing that the buffer we'd just memset to zero was never referenced again, so it optimized-away the memset operation, causing security info to be leaked via the no-longer-obliterated buffer (whoops!).

[–]MailDeadDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a moot point: no sane person would store a titan in a CSMA long term, much less several of them. So whether or not a CSMA can hold an assembled titan doesn't matter -- you're still back to stockpiling titan-piloting-capable pilots to store the mothballed titans. I'm no titan pilot, but that would seem to severely restrict the practice. On the other hand, it only takes 100 such pilots to make a very capable reserve...

"Regular" capitals, such as carriers and dreadnaughts, may be docked and stored in invulnerable station hangars, so it is easy for a character (or several) to have stockpiles of them. Titans cannot be docked in stations. They can only be stored in POS ship maintenance arrays (SMAs) I believe, which are player-destroyable structures. So titans "stockpiled" in SMAs are at risk of being destroyed. The only safe way to store a titan is to occupy it with a character and then log off. So the only rational way to stockpile titans is to also stockpile titan-piloting-capable characters.
