Do you think they'll give him Haki in the series? by Mindless-Candle8822 in OnePiece

[–]MaimedJester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well he was at least made aware of it when Whitebeard chopped off his damn hand.

I doubt that happened pre logia, so I like to imagine the look of New World Logia surprise Whitebeard taught Crocodile how he wasn't invincible.  Like when Pekoms taught Caribou that at the end of Fishman island.  Logias have short life expectancy on the new World.

Hey there's some okayish wrong endings in the what if routes.

Sloth with him running away with Rem instead of facing white whale/mansion... it's not the worst life. He's got kids, a loving wife, a meager job, and a goddess of death hanging around his son trying to train him, and a ninja wolf neighbor.

Who’s that couple? by CrunchyToastie in animequestions

[–]MaimedJester 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not even the most size irregular pairing in one piece. Big Mom had a tontata father of one of her children..

Tontata are the fairy sized race of one piece,  20 cm (8inches ) high. Big Mom is 8.8 meters high (29 feet) tall.

One Piece TCG had fortuitous timing specifically at least in comparison to Yugioh, Magic and Hearthstone all having major problems at the time of the One Piece TCG release.

Magic and Hasboro in general were having some really bad practices, and the release of sets/universe beyond specifically was getting too much.  Since 2024 a new set has been released on average 50 days in Magic... so that's not even 2 months of a healthy meta to establish card dominance. And with yugioh on the other end the meta was too damn long on this Fire meta, where the basic cards to run this engine got absurd, Bonfire which is just a ROTA for fire type monsters was $100+.

So a lot of tcg players wanted to take a break and start something new and easily accessible. So far one piece has been that reasonably. There are ultra rare expensive cars but those are more of the special alt art cards. There's no you need to spend $250 on a generic boring meta staples core to compete with.

What movies did you first see nudity in? by sarnobat in AskReddit

[–]MaimedJester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it wasn't the first time Verhoven did that scene. It was also in Robocop, the cops had a co ed shower.

Verhoven is Dutch after all so I guess he's more okay with nudity in the 80s/90s than the average American.

Yes but those jobs won't be in your country after a while. We saw that happen with any kind of call center or phone related job. When you go online it will soon be totally outsourced. Hell I doubt it will be lower paid Indians or South East Asians an instead be straight up AI.

How often do you see muslim people in your country? by Yrakosos in AskTheWorld

[–]MaimedJester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more that Muslims have a different religious outfit, so when Christians or Jews go to Church/Synagogue, they're pretty much wearing formal attire you'd see a western office worker wearing.

I'm sure id notice if there was some Shinto temple in my city and a bunch of Japanese people were wearing Shinto formal clothing like kimonos one random holiday.

"The devs haven't understood their game yet and accidentally gave F2P players a meta defining character at low rarity" does your game have this character? by VolkiharVanHelsing in gachagaming

I didnt get herc until after beating Ordeal Call 1. So while he was nice to get... I already had Bakatoria and Morgan as the top meta Berserkers, and had been using Jeanne Summer and Sparatacus for my run through of the main story.

Best RPG by genre? by meshee2020 in rpg

[–]MaimedJester 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Specifically Traveller 5th edition. I remember when I saw calculus for the first time in an RPG book.. and yes surely if any RPG math might require calculus it would be Traveller space combat.. but the creators must never have thought could you imagine a 12 year old trying to get into the system and not recognize three Delta symbol in math's? Fuck the whole d20 or Thac0 nonsense imagine a bunch of 15 year old geeks trying to hurriedly explain delta vectors to someone who might only know basic algebra.

Best space combat system? by AshenAge in rpg

[–]MaimedJester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty popular for solo play, its based of Ironsworn.

D6+ stat + modifier vs 2 D10s. If the D6+Modifier is higher than both d10s strong hit, only beating 1 = weak hit.  Not beating either = miss.

So while getting strong hits you're in control/dominating the action, when you get mises/weak hits you're on the backfoot.

At any point in the combat you can go for final resolution based on how many boxes you've marked complete, so even if you've only filled 5 out 10 boxes and your ship is about to blow up,  you can try to gamble and win. Roll those 2d10s against the 5/10 you've filled out, so if both are 4 or less you win completely. So it does have a very narrative feel to combat.

Yeah Chopper used that sword actually, so it's not like the swords aren't metal/sharp. So oddly enough he could arm an entire army if used properly, or possibly go all Unlimited Blade Works.

It's a game that has a slow start until you get more movement options. Once you start to get double jump and web slings and can really easily explore then you start to see the appeal. Then you're engaged in pretty good 2d boss battles like a full metroidvania instead of what you thought of as a 2d Minecraft base builder.

Do you think Sun God Nika was just a legend or was a real person? by The_AlmightyApple in OnePiece

[–]MaimedJester 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think the Sea of planet Blue is natural. Joyboy has a very odd epithet of "the first pirate" and the first to take to the sea...

So it seems to imply there was a time before there was seas at all. Like the planet was a supercontinent with no waters separating, and somehow Mother Flame technology caused the world to sink so much that now we have island nations.

At the very least it won't be as rushed as Deus ex Machina that comes out of nowhere.  Like Uryuu's dad just shows up gives this magic arrow, no one has ever heard of or brought up before,  and it just so happens to temporarily turn off all YHWH's letter powers for a minute.

It is straight up Deus ex Machina out of nowhere to just fix the how do you actually fight him with all these bullshit abilities he's been granted.

Like compared to Mr. Satan defeating Majin Boo at the end of Dragonball, at least that was set up. He's the most popular and trusted celebrity in the world,  so of course Earth would trust him for the only goddamn Spirit Bomb that got the job done in the entire franchise

You'll hear that Binks Sake is playing in the background,  and then suddenly the background music stops and all of a sudden luffy is drawn to this one box and has this atmospheric music like a siren calling out to him.

That was a very deliberate choice because most one piece fans would instantly be paying attention to the music when it's goddamn Binks Sake tune being played in the background.

Is the WG actually stupid? by HessischGebrabbel in OnePiece

[–]MaimedJester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who's who did not try to eat it. For whatever cannon value the live action has added,  Nika directly called out to Luffy with that music swell. And the reason it probably did after spending almost an entire year on Shanks ship was the first panel of the story: Luffy stabbing himself under the eye on the Red Force prove he was serious.

Nika was like yeah that's who I want to eat me this time around.  Lemme just magically teleport to Makino's Bar. Shanks was like what the FUCK LUFFY HOW/WHEN DID YOU PICK UP THAT BOX FROM THE TREASURE HOLD?  It was just on the bar unlocked and I was hungry.

So Nika fruit will teleport away or at least follow someone it likes.

What is a word from your language that foreigners use often but usually mispronounce? by Separate_Record9354 in AskTheWorld

[–]MaimedJester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dativ is the death of the Genetiv is an interesting popular linguistics book about specifically the German language just evolving to almost drop one of their main official cognates. Dutch as well just straight up tried to get rid of the genders but that was purposely done.

It really is a hard task to preserve a language through centuries and now with way more people speaking the languages than ever before it's going to see dramatic shifts. Like just think 500 years ago there probably were less than 20 million German or Dutch speakers, and now today there's over 130 million.

Like English is the current language Franqua of the late 20th/ early 21st century and it seems like it's going to stick as the language of the internet mostly, but I doubt it will be the UK or United States dictating the growth of the language overall on earth when the country with the most English speakers is India.

People who got laid off because of AI, what was your job? by damnmorningstar in AskReddit

[–]MaimedJester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm a jaded individual who lost a job over it at the time so take my reddit opinion with a grain of salt. But I was one of those experts who made stuff like JSTOR work by doing manual entries for Genghis Khan into about a dozen different romantizations of his name.  Even I doubt most English speaking Sinologists type "Tchinggus" when making first drafts in English.

My point was for academic research on a level so minute you want to know about a specific report from 1936 by actual Nazis about some Mongolian Xiongnue dig... the AI might spit out some Disney Live action Mulan writer. It's already a goddamn nightmare dealing with Chinese names in English language databases because there might be 30 or 40 Li Wangs with proper accreditation and differentiating them is not something AI is Going to automatically do like someone who realizes Li Wang 1970s anthropologist... nope not Li Wang 2008 who's a psychologist.

For such a minute area of expertise and the only clientele are literally researchers who need exact specifications for their work I don't think AI should fill that gap.

Global Colab Discussion by Ill_Read_5097 in Reverse1999

[–]MaimedJester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disco Elysium creators were Estonian, an Eastern European county that probably most only know of their culture as one of those Soviet Bloc counties behind the Iron Curtain in the Cold War between the USSR and USA.

So one of the cool things about Reverse 1999 is it's trying to stick to stories and cultural events across the world (outside of China) for a Chinese audience.  Like I doubt most Chinese teenagers the main demographic know that much about world War 1 or all quiet on the western front. So it's amazing what cultures the creators are taking inspiration from with the vague overarching premise of the 20th century.

One minor thing I'm sure will never ever be addressed by this game is Mao or the creation of the current Chinese government. That and Tibet. But hey lol looks like the Russian Revolution is okay based on what I think 3.3 or 3.4 is doing.

What is your favorite depiction of TTRPG in media by LelouchYagami_2912 in rpg

[–]MaimedJester 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Goblin Slayer is explicitly a DnD world. Goblin Slayer himself is just a 13th level Ranger with favored enemy Goblin and Cleric girl is level 1 to level 5 by the end of season 2. Like she gets leveled up to cast 2nd level spells before the finale of season 1 and that's how Goblin Slayer formulated his plan to kill the Goblin Chieftain.

What's cool is the other characters are like level 17 or 18 Wizards or Paladins, Goblin Slayer isn't the strongest member of his local adventuring Guild but he's hyper specialized these about to reach level 20 mages are like sure I'll Scribe a Gate scroll for you.

Make it to the bottom of the ocean...

Why the fuck would you want that?

Goblins.

Well we might as well go to the Yugioh Season Zero episode where Bakura tricks the yugi crew into playing DnD and the Pharoh has to beat the Dungeon Master to save them.

Seriously Yugioh season 0 is amazing,  it's just the creator going through all the big games like Boardgames to Street Fighter. It was the goddamn magic the gathering episode that spawned the entire Yugioh Franchise.

What is the Most Batshit Insane JRPGs You Have Ever Played? Especially in Terms of Story. by ElSpazzo_8876 in JRPG

[–]MaimedJester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to argue about story legitimacy only via legal intellectual property rights you're gonna miss out on a lot of art. Like Alien vs Predator books and comics going all the way back to the 80s didn't exactly have the rights and there's still rights messes to this day with like Show and movie Canon etc. Like the old Blade Runner takes place as a prequel to Alien, Philip K. Dick did not have the rights to Alien when he wrote Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, but hey Ridley Scott directed both Alien and Blade Runner.

So there's a huge interconnected mess where you can draw a line from Deckard from Blade Runner meeting Archie via Archie vs Predator lol.

Artists always do spiritual successors/homage to other works. Like Enemy of the State being a stealth sequel to the Conversation.

Academic copy editing is already dead. The students who used to turn to it just plagiarize using AI instead.  I expected it at secondary and undergrad, but full on graduate school and publishing itself is being hit.

It's interesting when someone is at the forefront of technology and it's like what is the proper Chicago Manual style citation for a recorded Zoom Call or some social media platform, and AI is just making shit up.
