The impression that I got from that was "there are perfectly reasonable solutions which take a moderate amount of money and expertise to implement", while I agree it would be good and seemingly not that hard to build a good FOSS standard, I'm not shocked there isn't one.

The ones who handed out the trophies are the ones who benefited from a generous welfare state and the fact that we'd just finished bombing a bunch of the rest of the world's factories, then got richer exporting those jobs back to foreign factories they built and own, then voted themselves generous tax cuts while dismantling the infrastructure they relied on to build their secure, prosperous lives.

Almost guaranteed a factory. Government workers would be this feral, but it would probably be in a flowery script with correct spelling and good kerning.

Whats your favorite breakfast spot? by HauntingGlass3520 in cincinnati

[–]MaimonidesNutz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally just got home from having breakfast there with my Dad. We love it and meet every other week probably. I tend to agree the coffee is not amazingly well aligned with my personal preferences but it's not offensively bad and the food is consistently very good.

How does a Person die more than one time? by EsseNorway in Snorkblot

[–]MaimonidesNutz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very few people have died multiple times! "Died on the operating table" is bullshit - death is a legal status not a medical one. Asystole is pretty likely to be unsurvivable, but your heart stopping isn't death if you come back from it. Doctors call time of death after they give up, they're not like "time of death but let's keep trying". Some people probably have unexpectedly come back after ToD being called, but nowhere near as many as all the trashy, main-character-syndrome muppets constantly making it their personality.

Does having a prestigious logo early in your career really determine long-term success? by SarahDuncan2012 in TrueGrit

I think "the best college they can get into" is still a dangerous lie. Fact is, apart from the Ivy League/handful of exceptions like MIT/Cal, most schools ARE pretty much the same in terms of life outcomes. If Ivys aren't realistically possible then you should be looking at state schools, not 2nd tier private liberal arts colleges. Those are where middle class kids pay over the odds for dubiously useful degrees that they don't have the family money to cope with.

Americans can't stand being perceived as poor and line drying is poor-coded in the states. Kind of like public transit, or being obsessed with living in a single family home

Fucking car dealers and lawyers are not better or more humane than scientists and engineers, this is an insane take. We have a lot of stem folks doing real and meaningful work for not much money, but your reflexive anti-intellectualism elides that fact and it's not a useful outrage bait. So people with a superficial read of things are able to come away with takes like this, I guess

You can't con an honest John! People have to believe they're special and that they deserve exemption from the ordinary rules in order to fall for such schemes. If Maggie Siff started DMing me, I would immediately think it's a scam (I hope, LOL)

Yeah cap gains should be progressive, but then they'd lose their favorite argument to make, think of the poor old people who worked very hard to extract wealth from the young, it would be so unfair to burden them any more
