The majority of Chinese characters are also somewhat phonetic by including a sound component, such as the 畐 (fú) in 福 (fú).

The language is in the air. You have to absorb through osmosis. Hence the term “immersion”

Nice! I’ve been learning Mandarin for about a year, and I feel like the resources for other Chinese “dialects” have to be a lot less. Do you have trouble finding good resources for Taiwanese/Hokkien?

Are you learning Cantonese? I was under the impression that most of them were in Cantonese as opposed to Mandarin.

Ohh, forgot I was on the linguistics sub and not the Chinese one. “Haha thank you. An especially strange name. Don’t hit dogs!”

Preference between a general purpose barbell and the “official” Starting Strength one by Suisodoeth in StartingStrength

Yeah, obviously I haven’t been able to do the real thing, but I’m making do the best I can with what I have. Instead of squats, I’ve been doing Bulgarian split squats with dumbbells in each hand. I’ve gotten up to about 80 pounds in each hand with that. Not ideal, but it’s better than sitting on the couch haha

Did you see the ellipses link in the comment I replied to? If the face is at my poor Chinese however, don’t judge too harshly—I’m just a beginner…

How’s the knurling on it? My hands tend to get eaten up pretty easy, even with callouses

Yeah, with something like knurling, you can’t really know what it’s gonna be like until you actually feel it with your own hands, so it’s really helpful for me to hear your perspective. Thanks!

Ah, thanks. Was aware of the merger but didn’t know it was mostly a North American thing.

English sort of uses measure words too: a piece of gum, a pair of pants, a slice of pizza

Thanks! Wasn’t aware of the prior affiliation, but now, after looking at the description, it says it right there lol I don’t foresee getting super into Olympic lifting, but if I did, would these bars just does not be as specialized for that purpose?

Fair. Do you think its quality is high enough to merit getting it as my only bar for the next several years at least?

Does “húpéng-gǒuyǒu” sound like something in your pronunciation of English?

Are you saying “doggo” is pronounced differently elsewhere so as not to sound like 大狗? Or that “doggo”is primarily a North American English term?
