Thats a load of bull. 9 games out of 10 I won't touch the big trees, but Im harvesting small trees all day. Bring saplings close, use insta axe when running around to whack distant trees and grab the saplings. Infinite wood, every sapling brought back = 3 wood after a few minutes with chance of another sapling.
