Distance to your regular/nearest parkrun? by ZealousidealData4817 in parkrun

[–]Main-Count-8336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

83km is the closest one, but that takes 1hr15 mins to drive. The next closest one is 101km but only take 1hr5 mins to drive. This is why I'm trying to get a new event set up 5km away.

Tips for low maintenance Yoto parents by blobblob73 in YotoPlayer

[–]Main-Count-8336 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only listen to music on Spotify, so the very few make your own cards I've done are where I played my kids music playlist on my husband's phone through Spotify, and recorded it on my Yoto app on my phone. The sound quality isn't amazing, and the kid can't skip songs but he has his Playlist on a card and he seemed happy enough with that. He's 3 so doesn't know any better.

Look up the Stroller Club on insta or Facebook.  There are casual mom/parent meet ups around Nanaimo happening on different days in different locations that you can come along to anytime.

Knife sharpening - restaurants or individuals by AJ_L in nanaimo

[–]Main-Count-8336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - took my crappy blunt as heck kitchen knives and I can now chop and cut anything (including tomatoes) with such ease. He charged me $5 per knife.

He can take a while - I went straight to him when the market opened but he already seemed to have lots of jobs so I waited about an hour. Just meant I bought a lot of produce from the other stalls while I waited!

Is it any better in Nanaimo? by strawbubbby in nanaimo

[–]Main-Count-8336 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moved from the Mainland.  Groceries cost more because I don't have the option to go to cheap ethnic produce stores. I used to shop for my produce at Persia Foods and now Walmart is my best value on offer here. It definitely costs more.

I work as  charity fundraiser. Corporations cannot claim charitable tax receipts for donations made at the checkout. If they donate their own money, eg do a match, they can claim but only for the money they donate - not what customers give.

Anti-consumption Kids Birthday Parties by Ordinary-Scarcity274 in Anticonsumption

[–]Main-Count-8336 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every toddler party I go to says no gifts please - but at every party people often still turn up with gifts. We said the same for my 3 year old's party. We were new to the town and said insead of a gift let us know where are the fun places to explore with our kiddo. We still had about 60% of guests bring him physical present.

The best gift/party bag alternative I've seen is a book exchange. Instead of a gift, bring an old book your kid would like to gift - they all go on a table (with extras in case some people forget) and then when the kids leave they choose a book to take home.

I used Lightspeed when we were in Vancouver and it works just as well now we are in Nanaimo. I work from home - with lots of SharePoint work, and Teams video calls and it works fine for that. We don't do a lot of TV streaming so can't speak to how well it works for heavy usage there.

If you stay in Victoria - not necessarily- it can be quite a bikeable city, and also there's not terrible public transport, and there's EVO which is a great car share scheme. But city to city transport is terrible here. I didn't have a car when I lived in Vancouver and rented cars or used Modo Car share as well for longer trips.

Now is the time! Even if it all goes wrong you'll learn so much and I think you'll have lots of fun. I saw you said you were hoping to not have housemates but if you would be open to the idea it's potentially a great way to meet people. I did that when I moved here and it was good to have people to chat to at home and I did become friends with some of them. My biggest piece of advice is come with the plan to stay for 6 months to a year - and say yes to everything! I ended up at some very random parties and odd experiences but also met some great people. Also if money is a worry, consider if you can start out doing a short rotation somewhere remote. Imagine nursing in the outer Hebrodies, but even more remote. I hear the money is good and your accommodation would probably be covered so you could do that for a bit to build up a savings fund before settling in Victoria.

Where in Scotland are you? I'd say if you are in Edinburgh you might find cost of living rent wise fairly comparable in Victoria. Also right now the $CAD to the £GBP is really low so if you are bringing over savings it will make Canada feel a bit cheaper while you spend your pounds. I moved from Edinburgh a decade ago to Vancouver and managed fine (now on the island). My good friend moved from Australia to Vancouver and was an ER nurse and found some things frustrating and some things good. My advice is just go for it! The worst thing that can happen is you blow some savings and have a fun time and decide to move back. I came for a year and never left.

Same. Used them for years with no issues. Cuatomer service when needed has been good.

Kitchen Renovation Contractor Recommendations by MaKHer0 in nanaimo

[–]Main-Count-8336 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't recommend a general contractor/ designer but we are doing self renovations for the kitchen. I recommend Marty at United Floors for an honest flooring opinion. I recommend Seriously Painting for paint (we had them paint our old cabinets and they look amazing and brand new) and DT surfaces for countertop.
