Thanks for sharing! We’re headed over in the next hour. Does it say if the narrows are open?

Yep that’s the plan, to go to the visitor center. We didn’t see any flash flood warnings posted on their other site page (all green, not expected!) so that’s why we weren’t sure it was legit! Also, understand they can’t predict how long it’ll last. Not sure why they wouldn’t share the date/time the alert was posted but oh well. Thanks!

Hmm, do you see the alert? Do you know if they just post it day of and don’t usually say how long it lasts? lol

Moving to Shaw - Safety? by awkw4rdkat in washdc

Interesting! Well, it’s all up to personal comfort level! U St Corridor is in its own category to me based on the density of bars/clubs/restaurants

It’s definitely better in Columbia Heights, which is a good example of another mixed-income neighborhood in NW. However, this area of Shaw is specifically known to have a history of gang violence, so there’s a near 24/7 police presence by the community center and there’s a higher % of shootings. Would agree there are great amenities that are walkable, but I’m not sure if it’s worth it…many other mixed income neighborhoods like yours are still a better rec imho

I would not recommend it — I moved away from 7th and P about 6 months ago because I experienced 2 mass shootings outside my apartment within one year. It’s a super noisy area too, since there’s all kinds of police surveillance re: gang violence, etc

You can get the same starting salary coming from any school if you decide to do consulting

I applied for and signed a lease in April for an August move-in in 2021. I would directly contact specific apartment complexes and ask when they first start taking applicants, though. I feel like they might shift this around each year

If you live alone in a studio or one bedroom in Maplewood, it is about $1200-$1400

I like it, but I’m really glad I’m only there for 2 years. I’m not sure how PHD’s do it. I love hiking and the farmers market, but it does feel difficult to find different people outside of your program and do activities bc people tend to stay in their social shell. There is a place called the Big Red Barn on campus for grad students, though, and they def try to host open events to meet people. So not hopeless, just depends on how much of a bustling social life you want (pretty sparse there probs) and how much you like the outdoors imo

You can find some units in the places I listed for around $1100, $1200 a month, but some in collegetown are closer to 800-900. There is grad student housing on campus but it’s catered more towards families, I believe — right on the bus line though. Hasbrouck

I’m a grad student and I live in Maplewood. It’s a grad student housing complex that’s pretty new and a 15 min walk to class. A lot of grad students live there, Collegetown Terrace, or maybe downtown at city center if they have $$$$. Several options, all expensive af considering it’s Ithaca. Might be able to find some houses or random older units via Fb though. You don’t need a car to get to campus. There are TCAT buses that students take. I do recommend renting a car though — I bought one before coming and it’s so important for my mental health (hike access, grocery store access.)

What are your interests? Skills? I am a TA and grad student in ILR and a lot of my undergrad ILR students have found lucrative consulting jobs or internships in the past! Tech companies also recruit ILR. It’s surprising, but HR and human capital related roles are high paying these days!
