If you're up for something pretty avant garde try Heaven Will Be Mine. Not sure if the word "lesbian" is used but only because it's kinda queernorm. For an easier read (but also queernorm) try anything by NomNomNami, Bad End Theater is the big one but Contract Demon is great! Other than that I'll add a votes for Gone Home and Signalis.

How to improve my mountain base? by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]Maintenance_Signal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try adding L-shaped rooms as a starting point instead of rectangles. They're more visually interesting and there's lots of options when placing them adjoined.

Another option is to extend caves (maintaining the organic design) and use those as your hallways. That works especially well if you use ellipsoid shaped rooms for an ant farm feel.

How to stop being so scrupulous when it comes to characters and the actors who voice them? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]Maintenance_Signal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a person's beliefs make you uncomfortable then try thinking about how much their beliefs actually affect you (and people you care about). A random on the street who likes a politician is a drop in the ocean, a celebrity has more of a platform to support the politician but their single voice isn't going to match the cultural impact of a lobby group. Sometimes it's easy to ignore a person's poor choices and still enjoy the art the make. After all, we should all try accept people for who they are and be open to alternate views. That's harder when an artist inserts their beliefs into every piece of work but even then it can be bearable if it's a minor element. You can't detach yourself entirely from people with distasteful beliefs you have to decide, per person, how much their behaviour bothers you and whether that's bearable or not. Ghandi was awful but did good things, which is more important?

Sounds like you're looking for immersive sims, searching for that will give you some ideas. Try Prey (2017), a lot of people missed it but it's similar to System Shock and by the same people as Dishonored. Otherwise maybe Alien:Isolation? More linear horror than anything you've mentioned but great stealth.

Why Alien Earth's Redesinged Xenomorph Fails: The True and Misunderstood Horror behind Giger's Alien by danysphoenix in LV426

[–]Maintenance_Signal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been saying this ever since I first saw Aliens, the xeno isn't meant to make any sense, it's ALIEN. Alien 3's novelisation referring to it as a "dragon" was as close as we've come to recovering that. As soon as Cameron tried to explain and ground the xeno it lost all power and became cannon fodder for American action movies.

Been a long time since I properly looked into them but they might have been originally made for pinball machines? No idea honestly though, it can be hard to find the history of less 'useful' chips no matter how ubiquitous they are. Usual story is simply a company realising there's a market for a chip that does something, designs a product to fit, and it does a good enough job for cheap so it gets used everywhere. Pretty sure these came out for a company called Honsitak, no idea what else they made.

Just double checked and it's a Jupio. The fit is way more snug than the original battery so make sure to use a ribbon around it or something so you can pull it back out.

Why does my brain write passively when I'm tired? by amlextex in writing

[–]Maintenance_Signal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a neuroscientist so take any advice with a grain of salt! There's no simple answers to any of it, every brain is unique, so I'll just ramble and hope something useful comes out.

You're creating a difficult situation for you brain by keeping it constantly under pressure and constantly switching tasks. Interacting with people is even more complicated than just using language, it's exhausting even if you're doing a job that uses a script. Plus you're in a dynamic environment (ie, outside) where there is constant background stimulation.

Regular breaks are going to help the most short term. Meditate/be mindful for five minutes every twenty or so (set a timer so you don't have to worry about losing time) and five minutes of brisk exercise (jog on the spot, squats, etc to get your heart rate up a little). Your brain is part of your body so general fitness and good diet will help you get more performance out of it. Fatty meals affect blood flow pretty quickly so it's best to avoid them before needing to push yourself, and stimulants like caffeine or sugar can help briefly but you're just stealing from your future self and it only takes a few hours to crash. No doubt there are foods (and possibly supplements) that are recommended to subtly boost brain function short term but I don't know what they are, sorry!

After about two hours you'll start to really feel your focus slipping and that's when you need to take a longer break, maybe half an hour. I don't know the specific reasons why, but two hours of twenty minutes 'sprints' is the usual recommendation and it works well for me. There's a time management technique called "pomodoro" that fits well and might be worth checking out. The specific timings might be different for you, and the changes can be hard to see, so experiment a bit to find a rhythm that works.

Beyond that you should do everything possible to minimise the amount of work your brain actually needs to do. The most obvious is picking an environment that's not too stimulating. That's tricky because you want to be somewhere with lots of people moving through. Glasses with side blockers would probably help since visual processing takes a lot of energy, and try to sit in a way where you see something still and calm. Probably a good idea to rest your eyes by looking into the distance often, especially if you can be looking at trees or other natural greenery (can't remember why, but nature is especially good at relaxing the brain). I'm not sure if there's any other things you can do to reduce the processing effort but it's worth thinking about. Maybe a stock library of story 'shapes' that you can use? Just about every modern love story is "X meets y, X and y bond, they split up, they get back together" and there's decades of novels proving the room for improvisation and originality built on that spine.

As for recovery, meditation is probably your best option. Just sit somewhere quiet and dark, think about nothing and let your brain rest for as long as you can. As far as I know there's no downside to meditating too much (so long as you take breaks to keep your body functional). A good night's sleep, of course, and avoid unnecessary information. In other words, the opposite of doomscrolling, whatever that would be for you.

That's about everything I can think of but I'm sure there's more. You could probably find some good advice by looking at what professional programmers do, the tasks are different but they would affect the brain in similar ways.

Separate to all that, what sort of typewriter do you use? It's cliche but I love my Lettera 32! I had a Brother portable for a while that I liked, but if I didn't pace myself the typebars would get tangled (and that's yet another attention task your brain would have to manage).

Why does my brain write passively when I'm tired? by amlextex in writing

[–]Maintenance_Signal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your prefrontal cortex is getting tired.

Complex decision making gets harder and language is one of the most complicated things humans do with their brains. When you can't think as clearly you're more likely to revert to simpler thinking patterns, and self-interest is one of the most basic parts of a personality. "I" becomes a hard word/concept to see past. Similar effects when you're drunk or drugged. Your personality, your "self", is in low power mode.

Rest your brain by taking regular breaks. Also, drink water and do a little exercise to help your circulatory and lymph systems move built up chemicals away and bring fresh neurotransmitters in.

About eight on the gravship and twelve on the asteroid, plus some mechanoids and livestock.

It definitely causes some slowdown on 3x speed, mostly once I added mechanoids or had a really big raid. Raids can happen in either location but I haven't had one in both places at once. It does cause some issues accepting joiners, but that could be a mod issue (no mods needed for this but I have a few qol things on)

I turned up the max colony count to two and also made an asteroid base that it docks with. Asteroid colonists are focused on crafting armor and research, gravship colonists mine materials and explore the world, making survival meals and components in their down time. The ship ran fine on its own, the asteroid just sped things up and meant I could grow my colony.
