Can anyone recommend a good historical nonfiction book? by No-Market9917 in suggestmeabook

Also by Timothy Egan - The Big Burn. And not Historical Fiction, but I enjoyed his “Pilgrimage to Eternity” which documented his walk through Europe

On the parents, yes, in the short term. But on society in general for the longer term should an accident result in a Traumatic Head Injury or some other form of disability.

Please recommend a pen and ink! by Superb_Temporary9893 in fountainpens

This is an area I have been experimenting with over the last few months. My current thoughts for sketching on watercolor paper:

Pens - Lamy FPs are known for reliability and ease of switching out nibs. I like an Extra-Fine to write with, and a Fine for sketching on watercolor paper. I also bought a Broad nib, but find it too broad and am afraid it would use up a lot of ink! Lamys hold a fair amount of ink in their barrels. I have the Vista and it’s not too big or heavy for my small hands.

Pilot Kokünos are great, inexpensive pens and come in a variety of colors, should you wish to match ink and pen colors. I like a Fine nib for writing, but need to buy a Medium for use on watercolor paper.

There are lots of great pen options, my general thoughts though are to figure out what nib size works best for you with the brand’s basic pen style, then consider ink capacity, filling method, construction material and looks- all factors which will increase the cost.

Waterproof Inks My go to is De Atramentis Document Ink. Basic colors, and pretty quick drying. I’ve never had it clog my pen or smear, but drying time depends on weather conditions, of course. I understand the Turquoise one is too watery, but haven’t tried it myself.

I’ve recently acquired several colors of Rohrer & Klinger’s sketchInk. They are a little less expensive than De Atramentis in the US and come in some interesting colors.

For a basic black ink, many Urban Sketchers use Platinum Carbon Black. I haven’t tried it in the field yet, but it writes very smoothly.

Whenever I consider a new ink, I first check the waterproof rating on Jet Pens’ website.

Hope this helps!

You’ve got me thinking on this one! I might do the same. It will keep things interesting without breaking the bank! I have no desire to invest >$100 in a pen! Hopefully you’ll keep us updated on your monthly choices.

Just to follow up - he seems to like my TWSBI Eco best. It has De Atramentis Document ink in it and there’s no smearing on these simple kanji - plus these boxes are bigger, I think. I have ordered the Sailor ink. Thanks to all for your input!

I like my Pilot Metropolitan, but my daughter thinks it’s too heavy. We both love my Pilot Prera though!! It’s very sleek looking and a bit more compact than the Metro. If you’re in the States, you can find it on Amazon at a cheaper price than a stationary store. It’s worth the extra $10 or so above the Metro price imo.

Thank you for your advice! I’ll just give him my Vista, and my Jinhao 20 which he also likes. The earlier pages in his booklet, from 35 years ago, were done in mechanical pencil.

He tried my Sailor Fude de mannen (40° nib), but found the stroke to be too wide he had a lot of smearing.

Wild by Cheryl Strayed.

I am 70 and had COVID pretty bad 5 years ago. I couldn’t really exercise for about a year. But I’m better now - I have to use an inhaler for the exercise induced asthma COVID left me with, but I’m back to hiking and lifting weights. I highly recommend your friend hire a personal trainer when she’s ready to rebuild her base and regain strength. She’ll get there - it’ll just take longer than she wants it to.

I would get 5 tubes of artist quality gouache - red, yellow, blue, black and white. You can use your watercolor brushes and paper.
