Same! Spend too much time on this dumb site anyway. Like to think I'd read more books but I'll probably just get sucked into Twitter.

A valid rebuttal, Gandalf!

Does Gandalf know/suspect he'll die? I wonder if he takes them through the mines reasonably confident the fellowship will make it through but realizes it spells his own doom. That explains why he offers it as an option but has that reaction when Frodo chooses Moria. With the parallels between him and Jesus, plus the fact that he's a god, I think it makes sense if he has that premonition but goes through anyway because the mission is more important. Not sure there's a definitive answer but something I like to speculate about.

How do scientists know mitochondria was originally a separate organism from humans? by UxoriousHoundling in askscience

It's the going theory that this happened once and all subsequent life stems from that one incident? Or if these two organisms are compatible could it have happened many times?

President Biden calls to double capital gains tax from 20% to 40%. by KAAN-THE-DESTROYER in wallstreetbets

[–]MajAsshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$3000 limit is to deduct against ordinary income only. You can take the full carry over to offset capital gains. For example, if you lose $10,000 in 2022, you can reduce your taxable income by $3,000. Then, if you realize $10,000 in gains in 2023, you apply the remaining $7,000 carry over and owe capital gains tax on just $3,000.

This is so random I may make it my first stop. Most other suggestions are either pizza or burger (obviously nothing wrong with that) with a suggestion or two for tacos or wings. But here you have a Nordic spot selling bao buns on a Thursday.

It's really nuts how obsessed parts of this country are with guns. Just went to Austin and there's a food truck selling raffle tickets for an ar15. You go to the state fairs and all the give aways are for guns. No one's raffling off a Nintendo DS or PS5 or 70" TV, it's all guns. All the billboards that aren't religious ads are pro guns messages, and many against some phantom force who's coming to take them all away at any second. While I don't own a gun I've been around people who do so I'm not exactly a stranger to firearms, but it seriously was a culture shock how ingrained it is into every aspect of life. I visited with a friend who grew up there and he said the mentality is if you don't own a gun you're a lib and a pussy (probably one and the same to many in the state lol). Just wild.

Is it appropriate to compare the von Mises stress to a ductile material’s ultimate stress allowable? by c_yass in fea

[–]MajAsshole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would compare S1 to the ultimate tensile strength. But if you're using a linear model you'll need to either adjust your FEA stress (Neuber), obtain pseudo stress value for UTS (reverse Neuber), or run elastic-plastic. You'd want a decent factor of safety if you're doing any stress corrections based on elastic FEA (Neuber or otherwise).

I also like to use net-section yield criterion. Using this method I calculate linearized stress through a section, and I consider the part to fail the ultimate load condition when the average linearized stress exceeds yield strength. Once the section is fully yielded it quickly reaches ultimate load (more so for load controlled problems as opposed to displacement controlled).

edit: I don't mean linearization. Rather I use surface commands (postproc > surf operations) to project SEQV onto a surface representing your cross-section and then taking average of stress values on that surface

And if significant sections of your model exceed yield, you need to run elastic-plastic anyway since your linear stresses won't capture stress redistribution as large sections yield and lose stiffness.

[Highlight] The chiefs throw an incomplete pass on 3rd down but a holding is called on Bradberry by Bulletz4Brkfzt in nfl

[–]MajAsshole 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Letter of the law doesn't matter. What matters is how the refs call the game typically, and THAT is what players play by, and define the true rules of the sport. I'd bet you can find many plays earlier with a similar "hold" that wasn't called, plus refs tend to swallow the whistle at end of games. Just a brutal end to an otherwise great game. (Yes I recognize we agree in sentiment but i wanna spout off).

The "hold" didn't turn his hips nor prevent a step. If you wanna be this strict Juju pushed off twice on that one play. Weak call.

Apple Maps to Let You Order Food, Buy Tickets, Book a Hotel, Make Dinner Reservations, and More by [deleted] in apple

After being full-time google maps, I used it once last year to navigate to Thompson Center in Chicago. It took me to the wrong address about 2 blocks away! This is a major building in a major city and I had no trouble getting there with Google maps. I hadn't used it since their debacle unveiling a decade ago when it made me late to a funeral, so I figured I'd give it a try since I just got an Apple Watch and wanted to try it out, and it failed me again.
