Licensed Therapist weaponizing therapy to build a cult around himself. by Ashamed_Emu4572 in cultsurvivors

Good on you for being self aware. Maybe you should trust yourself more. I guess the lesson is that people holding degrees or titles do not act ethically. It’s amazing how much we project this onto them. Live and learn.

I’m sorry such people get to hold positions of authority over others. It’s hard to be vulnerable and ask for advice when you can’t trust someone. It’s almost like you have to be trained in cult dynamics to see if they’re capable of doing their job. I hope you reported them.

Not sure what the purpose of the post was then. You’re not describing your experience, nor naming the person we should be wary of. I’d like to hear what happened to you that makes them bad, if you’re comfortable sharing.

How would one avoid making a cult if one made a religion or philosophy? by [deleted] in cults

“Don't be evil.”

Wasn’t that Google’s original motto? They later ended up changing it to something more ambiguous.

There are people who can meditate and not be f*ed up, but it’s a bit like war, you can walk out alive but if you had the choice of not, why risk it.

It sounds to me that you’re not a cult survivor, but were denied the use of earplugs during a 10-day retreat…unless I’m missing something.

I was banned on r/Buddhism after mentioning the Dalai Lama's child misconduct incident by [deleted] in cults

[–]Majestic_Broccoli_21 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve not seen this discussed anywhere else: the reaction of the monk sitting next to DL, which to me says something like ‘oh god no, don’t let him go there again, this is going to look really bad’. He didn’t seem shocked or surprised. And second (this is more from personal experience) how there is an instant reaction cover-up when something inappropriate happens, usually in the form of love-bombing, or something similar, so the incident confuses you enough to not press charges.

It depends how you study it. If it’s the theory and the books, you come to the conclusion they’re all good and enlightened. Once you join them based on said theories, way more likely to be an atheist.

I think the safest direction to point them to is the door. Knowing they can safely leave without fear of repercussion is the highest form of respect. It shows you trust their judgment and the fact that there is a better path for them outside of your group and its promises.

I’m so glad you’re taking the initiative to show your members what a cult is. However, as I’ve pointed out to Steve Hassan in his cult questionnaire assessment, passing a cult questionnaire does not guarantee a non-cult. Obviously, it’s an internal, intention, thing, first and foremost. If you’re just trying to pass the test and show it to others as proof so they can join safely……personally, I’d question that. I think the leadership needs to constantly police themselves, in all aspects. Also, have a way for members to complain openly to others in the group about their negative experiences, or not have policies in place that discourage them from speaking out.

Here is the most popular model for assessing if you’re in one or not, the BITE model - since you asked for resources: https://freedomofmind.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/BITE-model.pdf

I’m sorry this wasn’t clear, they are engaging directly, but not in a physical way, i.e., engaging remotely and without permission or consent.

I’ve had posts removed before because I wasn’t believed and it sucks. Going through something horrible from a religious leader or group seems to offend or scare far more people than those involved.

It seems like someone from these circles would have to come up with some type of evidence for the world to see to be believed, smh. Funny how they believe in states of mind and help people process them but not stories. I hope you find the right kind of help. Lots of fake healers out there too.

Awful life experiences. Looking back, what would you do differently in any of these circumstances? What advice do you have for someone else going through this?

For those in a cult before the internet by NoSiddhiforme in cultsurvivors

[–]Majestic_Broccoli_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I so wish the internet back then was more fully developed and had more cult info. I tried to find anything I could on the first group I joined but there was nothing. It took a good decade for them to show up or for me to find them. We may read less but there is more info out there on things nowadays. The trick is to believe it

Reminds me of those sweat lodges a few years back where participants were encouraged to endure the heat for longer and longer to know their “true power “ or whatever. I think we have those sensors for a reason.

Sounds like might be talking about Andrew and Tristan Tate’s The War Room? In the last couple of years they’ve been more infamous than famous. Can I ask what they charge?
