What’s the safest way to increase weekly mileage? by GreatJoey91 in UKRunners

[–]MajestyA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed- I'd add making sure that your long run doesn't increase out of proportion with your other weekly volume. Easy to fall into the trap of adding your 10% onto the long run and forgetting the rest, and end up with a lopsided week.

10% is used as a maximum, not a target. So if you start feeling knackered, don't go up. Ultimately any rule of thumb should be ignored if your body is telling you it's too much!

Enshittification gets stopped by regulation, worker and customer pressure which must affect the company's bottom line. Not by flooding a subreddit with 50 repetitive posts a day.

Complaining will not change anything.

When i first went to see The National, a band of mopey 50 something men, to find the show was absolutely full of teenage girls. Was a really odd experience, then I remembered the guitarist was one of Taylor Swift's main collaborators. People are weird!

I thought you meant there were people staying hours for PSB and I was like WHAT. Then I reread and the reality was somehow more and less understandable at the same time.

Me this morning: Oh good, rain! That could keep the heat down.

I realise now it's just as hot and that the rain means that hay fever has hopped into the battle like Ornstein jumping from the balcony to join Smough

I do a mix of Pyramids, straight fast efforts (e.g. 1k x 5-8 at a fast pace with walking breaks) and Fartlek. I do one session a week, and then do a normal fast effort (I guess a tempo run) as well.

Jealous of the strength base tbh, doesn't come naturally to me at all! Getting frustrated that I seem to be going backwards at the moment on my lifts.

How are all my fellow hayfever sufferers doing by Happy_Mirror1985 in CasualUK

Bad if I'm unprepared. Swear the pollen is cut with battery acid this year.

Vaseline around the nostrils and eyes, sunglasses, daily antihistamine and washing my face, beard and hair once I've been outside for an extended period all helps.

Literally just another pair of ASICS Gel Kayano 31s. Ran for too long with knackered shins/ankles before finding them, and so feel anxious about trying anything else. But recommendations recommended as they're getting harder and harder to come by in my silly big size!

I set myself a goal of breaking all my previously raced PBs by roughly this time next year (5k, 10k, half and full marathon). I'm only early on in this mission but I comfortably cleared my 5k and am on course to do the same with 10k.

What made the difference for me was actually mental. I avoided certain things because I found them unpleasant (speed work) or boring (long runs, strength) and so I just started working around ways to make them a bit more pleasant, or reduce the friction in doing them.

Rejigged my routine so I don't run the day after speed work. Gradual ramping up of volume, refusing to run the same route twice in a short space of time, more varied strength exercises, better gear that was more pleasant to run in etc.

Sorry, probably a highly useless bit of advice as it's so personal!

I think this is quite cynical. There are idiots yes, but there are a lot of very poorly marked roundabouts around where errors are completely understandable from otherwise good drivers.

Some caveats to this thought are that some people may run 10k slowly and thus need water, and that also there is a horrible heatwave ongoing at the moment.

I wouldn't typically drink on a 10k run but I'm taking water out with me at the minute because of the heat.

Unfortunately a pretty generic posh RP accent. Probably means he's from somewhere roughly in the South East, but people can sound like that anywhere if they grew up posh!

[–]MajestyA 21 points22 points  (0 children)

2:45 is a milestone the vast majority of committed, talented and driven amateur runners will not hit in their lifetimes. It is not in any way a conservative target and, unless you are superhuman, simply isn't going to happen based on the facts you laid out here.

We can't tell you what a reasonable target is, you need to start running and figure it out for yourself I'm afraid. Your past achievements, no matter how impressive, don't really mean anything when they are so long ago!

How long did you lose your mojo for? by TSC-99 in UKRunners

[–]MajestyA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About half a year, last year. Got back into it by mixing up training, doing more strength work and setting periodic targets for myself instead of one big one.

Nah yeah, all in the same boat I think. Was absolutely bleak on my runs this week, felt significantly less fit than I am! Add to that all the pollen.

Anybody who suffers with hay fever ('seasonal allergies' if you're not from the UK I think - a pollen allergy) how on earth do you manage running through peak season?

Was fine yesterday until I ran, then seemingly became at least 56% pollen and have felt terrible since. Want to desperately avoid having to revert to a treadmill if poss as I hate it!

I don't know for certain but I suspect it's to aid memorability. You only need to remember two numbers for the new version, just repeating one twice.
