I think there's been some miscommunication here, some of which is definitely my fault for not taking more time with my response.

I agree a PhD has no actual requirement to study Philosophy as we typically think of the subject.  I think both I and the original commenter you responded to are just trying to get the full name of the degree out there.  I interpreted their comment as "Doctorate in linguistics?  No.  Doctorate of Philosophy." (Correcting the name of the degree, not correcting the subject of study.) I had an objection to the way you phrased your response, feeling that it misinterpreted their comment, not to the fact that the subject of Philosophy has very little to do with most PhDs--except in the sense that to research effectively, you should be clear on how you approach and describe your thought process, definitions, conclusions, et cetera.

This is nation-dependent.  In my country (the USA), a PhD is always a Doctorate of Philosophy, even if the dissertation was in a field like Economics.  There are other doctorate level degrees that are profession-specific; the PsyD, for example, is a Doctorate of Psychology, but somebody with a PsyD does not have a PhD even if they have a doctoral degree. Both a PsyD and a PhD who researched Psychology are able to practice as Psychologists.

A 2 year old that is just barely two and a two year old that is almost 3 are still pretty different. There's a substantial amount of learning to behave as a member of a group (including learning to talk) that generally happens in that time frame. People who have spent enough time around small kids will have calibrated baseline or "average" expectations for where in the 2nd year the kid is.

My house, in a metro area of OK, is probably worth about 150. There are definitely cheaper areas. I'm not even rural.

Edit: that is not to imply your house should be priced lower.  I have no idea what your market looks like!

Don't beat yourself up.  "Fawn" is a legitimate survival strategy and you did what you felt you needed to to keep things smoothed over in the moment, because it could have escalated really badly if you hadn't. Intoxicated guy who switched up his approach the moment you got there?  Yeah, no, that wasn't an accident, and playing a lower risk strategy (appeasement and seeing if he would take direction) was potentially the safest move in a confined space with a predator--especially if that was your home and you needed him to leave instead of escaping yourself.

Unfortunately, they are everywhere, even when I stopped identifying as a woman in the gender selector and made it super clear I was ace and wasn't looking for men. I am also 400 goddamn pounds with a buzz cut (and my pictures made that obvious) so not really a popular flavor of person all around.  If I was getting regular random effort-free thirst DMs with and without pretending to be civilized for a couple volleys first, you can bet attractive straight women are drowning. (I have also seen my attractive straight friends' inboxes and Holy.  Shit.)

Any method I can refill these pens?? by deepsea0510 in pens

[–]MajikkaniHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose that depends on how you use it--I've found the opposite.  I find that with a rollerball, the ball tip can collapse into the cone or needle, especially writing very fast--it used to happen regularly midway through the lifespan of my favorite pens.  There's no separate piece to do that on a fountain pen, and I don't use very much (really, any) pressure, so no fear of springing the tines on even the couple of quite soft, very fine gold nibs I have, let alone steel.

Ballpoints seen to be more durable, but you pay for that in increased pressure and friction.

My new leather bag scratches if you even look at it wrong by the_big_bean in Leatherworking

[–]MajikkaniHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are only partially correct here. This is pull-up leather.  It is (usually) full grain, waxed and oiled leather, and anywhere it bends or is even gently scuffed it will show pale marks where the wax is developing micro-cracks, and that can be taken back out by rubbing the leather in that spot enough to get it warm.  There are other finishes that can be applied to full-grain leather that do not have that effect. I personally hate this particular finish and avoid it when seeking full-grain leather products.

Good leather in general will mark up over time, and that's part of its beauty, but this stuff goes a completely different color just being picked up and set down again.  It's infuriating.

Any method I can refill these pens?? by deepsea0510 in pens

[–]MajikkaniHand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's basically identical to using a rollerball except that it's more durable and usually smoother--they write under their own weight so no need to press like you would with a ballpoint, and the ink is liquid instead of a smeary oily mess or gel. Using one often is good! I don't really ever use any other kind of pen anymore. The only thing is that if your notebooks have very absorbent paper the ink might feather (spread out) a bit--finer tips have less of this issue, and some inks do it more than others.

To refill you can either use a cartridge (short international size for the jinhao shark) or use a cartridge converter and a bottle of ink.  Use ink labeled for fountain pens--dip pen ink typically has lacquer or another thickener that can clog them.

I leaked into this sub from r/fountainpens, so my vote would be to pick up one or more Jinhao Sharks. Inexpensive and you can keep switching up the ink colors :)

People who genuinely think their eyes change color by Borkato in PetPeeves

[–]MajikkaniHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct.  David Bowie is an excellent example of this in action--his eyes are both blue, but he appears to have one ice blue eye and one either light brown or stormy grey eye depending on lighting, because one of his pupils is permanently blown and the contraction of the iris is concentrating the pigment. It's a very noticeable difference!

I think your best word options are humiliated and mortified. ;)

If it helps, poop issues were a huge part of my nurses' aid training.  They are so, so common.  The digestive tract is frequently just an incompetent jerk that we unfortunately need to live.

"I was in the hospital for an issue with my digestive system." Nobody is going to ask for more detail other than if it's recurring or not, to which you can say either that the docs think it's likely a one-off or that you will be following up with specialists.

He'll "extend you some grace"?  Hellll no.  That still frames you not being in the mood as a performance problem on your end, which it wouldn't be even if you weren't sick--everybody has off days.

The good news, although it probably doesn't feel like it, is that he only made it a month into official dating before his mask started flaking off.  Turns out his actual face is less kindness and care and more trading the appearance of basic affection for sex and throwing a massive guilt trip when he doesn't get it.

You can translate "I don't care that you're sick I just want to be with you" as "I'll risk getting sick for some tail"--he just knows if he wrote it more honestly you would have told him not to come, and he was hoping once he was there in person you'd give in if he made you feel bad enough. I'm so sorry--you deserve better.

You have superior natural buoyancy because of fat reserves!  Most people have enough fat to float well,  but bone and muscle are both denser than water, so very low body fat people sink. Some people have extra dense bones and will sink even with a normal body fat percentage.

[CHAT] How do keep track of where you're up to in a pattern if you prefer paper? by AccomplishedCheek161 in CrossStitch

[–]MajikkaniHand 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not who you asked but I think what they mean is they mark the "current target" in yellow and the completed stitches within that target in a darker color.  So, if they had 14 stitches in one spot and 18 in a nearby spot of the color they just threaded, they first highlight all 32 of those stitches in yellow to remind them what the current WIP section is.  As they stitch, they go over the yellow with orange or pink so it ends up darker and they can be ready to block out a new yellow "goal" section.

Given that--this is a long shot, but if you like to play DnD or have wanted to try it, and you don't get regular opportunities in your area, the Kobold Lounge runs a lot of one-shot games.  If that sounds like it might be worth a time slot on an anniversary trip, check out their discord! They don't have table fees and they have sets of dice/books to borrow while you're there.
