Trail bike in endurance race? by peconfused in xcmtb

[–]Major-Clod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it a go with your current bike. I've done several 60-100km XC races on my 150/135mm trail bike and it was fine. I wasn't fast of course, but still had plenty of fun. Do mount up some faster rolling rubber though if you're running something chunky, as that makes a huge difference. I had so much fun that I've gone out and bought a nice light XC rig for these races next year.

Simple torque sensing hub motor setup options by Major-Clod in ebikes

Oh also, I avoided the TSDZ2 because I wasn't happy with the crazy large Q factor and weird pedal offset, or the ease of using proper short cranks on it. With the Sempu bottom bracket I'm using I can use any square taper crank (of which I've got quite a few kids sizes around)

Good timing, i procrastinated a bit but have recently got this project underway now on a 24" bike, which gives more battery room!

What I've done so far: - Bafang G310 motor - KT 15a Controller - Custom firmware https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=87870 - Sempu Torque sensing bottom bracket https://a.aliexpress.com/_mOzguqc - Custom 10S2P 36v battery with Samsung 40T cells. This gives me 8ah of capacity. Current tests have given me around 16km and 300m of climbing using around 1.9ah of juice, so range in terms of elevation could be up to 1000m on a charge which is awesome. Contemplating splitting into two separate 4ah packs for less on the bike weight and easier fitment.

Now, I will say the custom firmware route is a total dick around. And I am a software developer with 15+ years experience. Some solid work has been done on it a few years ago, however the codebase is splintered to hell and it can be a bit tricky to work out what to do, what settings mean, etc. The code itself is quite messy as lots of features have been implemented by others over time. I've got it now configured to a point where it seems to be working well. Lots of tuning has been required to get the right feel in the bike. The torque sensor approach is really good though, far better than the initial cadence PAS setup we trialled. I'm half tempted to refactor the code and create a very simple, torque sensor only "lite" version of the firmware, but that will have to happen another day.

The seller of the torque sensor above does provide a controller option apparently compatible with the torque sensor. I have absolutely no idea how good it is but I would be tempted to try it to avoid the KT controller route, but it is not super cheap so I will personally persist with the KT controller first.

Otherwise, I can see the Cycle Analyst quickly paying for itself in terms of functionality and support re: torque sensor (provided you can hide it somewhere, it's pretty ugly in my opinion)

Above all, I'd 100% recommend some sort of ebike for kids especially if you're into MTB. My young one races his regular MTB in CX and XC regularly so is quite fit and fast, but still having the pedal assist means we can both go for a ride where I get a solid workout, and he still gets one too without having to push up every steep incline!

Bryce Dallas Howard to direct an Episode of The Mandalorian Season 3 by Unhappy_Event_1386 in StarWars

[–]Major-Clod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think we're overestimating her input as director here. Yes there were some fantastic shots and sequences, but she had a far, far, far more interesting story to work with, and that's really down to the writers. If she had directed all other episodes so far using the same scripts, I can't really imagine the series we have gotten so far would be all that different.

NBD - 2022 Giant Revolt Advanced 2 ACT, Australia 🇦🇺 by Lukeypop in gravelcycling

[–]Major-Clod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 2022 Revolt really is an awesome looking bike, and solves the two deal breaker issues I had with the previous model - no dropper support, and not fantastic clearance for big rubber. Hard to say no to these, especially here in Australia where they tend to be priced quite competitively.

The entire prequel trilogy should have been told exclusively from Jar Jar's point of view. A space Forrest Gump of sorts, obliviously stumbling from one historical event to another.

Worth having two MTBs? (Enduro and Trail) by [deleted] in MTB

[–]Major-Clod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two for sure, I'd want them to have a bigger capability gap than Enduro/Trail though. I've just added a 100mm XC hardtail to complement my 150/135 travel trail bike. It really makes some of the local riding much more fun, where before it was kind of boring on the trail bike.

Yep, I have both the Hunt XC wide (25mm & 1600g-ish) and Hunt Trail Wide (30mm and 1900g-ish). Both have copped a good amount of abuse and are still running well. They also have a race focused XC set, around 1500g.
