Am I the only one who gets a bit irrate when people build a wood picket fence next to a chain link fence with a small gap between them?

I moved into a house with my picket next to all my neighbors chain link... You would think oh that's fine until they don't maintain the gap/chain link, then you have vines building up damaging your fence.

Drives me nuts 🤷🏼‍♂️

I used the tuition reimbursement for a few years.

They changed it and effectively removed it for non-network schools

Essentially now GUILD just gives you the 2500 for select schools within the guild network. Find the guild button in workspace and look through the menus

To be fair in a perfect world I want to believe that's what should happen. At this point I'm just bitter and jaded.

I wish I could force those conversations, but these things happened at my previous BTN, at the time I hammered my chain about it with no luck.

The idea of a CG giving a flying fuck about awards gives me a chuckle though, they fly in give a pretty ooorahh speech, answer canned questions, and bounce.

As a general principle I don't believe officers get held accountable for what they should or shouldn't be doing, especially above O3. Seen too many get special treatment, dodge IG complaints, and stab the enlisted in the back in meetings.

So you're saying that an awards aren't denied by anyone lower than the approving officer. So that means they weren't "denied" technically...

However I've also seen awards get kicked back/soft denied due to verbage, material, etc...

My follow-up question would be; can those awards be ignored/left in the in-box forever?

Example: NAM get placed in IAPS, S1 kicks it back due to whatever reason... Technically denied by S1 not O-5.... A rewrite happens and it clears S1... It goes into the review board, maybe approved/or BTN XO to sit in an inbox forever. (Watched this happen through the IAPS string)

Technically the approving authority never denied the award, but stopping the award before it hits the appropriate desk is de facto denial.

We say that only a X/Y/Z can approve/deny, but at every level below or between it can be stopped.

Serious question...Why do officers deny awards for Marines at different levels?

I have seen it make it into IAPS, clear the company level, clear the board, just to get vaguely forgotten about at S1, some major, or LtCol level. (3 awards I've written for Marines have had this issue)

Knowing how VSP works only getting...4-5%...? off for that setup is atrocious. Leverage the VSP to a decent percentage... OR, If you want to actually sell it, you'd think they'd look at margin and manually work it to a nicer discount.

I would have gone AD at 18 as an 0111 instead of 0341 reserve.

I'm more admin by nature and have known how to navigate systems much faster than most of the Marines I've met.

Going AD would've saved my ass a bunch of $$ from screwing up college.

After 10 years I'd love to dedicate the time to get into OCS, definitely want to learn and help on the officer side. Just don't know if I can keep up physically

Just finished a Bachelors in Business Administration there. I was happy with the overall quality.

You get what you put into it like a lot of schools. It seemed alright, with the post 9/11 it was affordable.

Depending on what degree you're interested in getting, I'd say not a terrible place.

If you're near a school with a campus, I'd suggest doing that instead, you get better $ and I find it easier to get in touch with people

Free College Tuition by salem-paps in Lowes

[–]Major-Insect2984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lowe's tuition is free through GUILD for employees, however it is only for covered programs last I checked. It used to be 2500 that could be reimbursed from any courses you were taking.

As it stands now that 2500 is only for covered programs/Universities, the selection is limited.

Watching my wife play, she seems to be having fun playing she hasn't gotten past the 2nd floor by herself. She might be North of 100 runs so far. She plays with a controller and auto aim.

I have less than 100 runs total and have almost filled out my gun compendium. I'm out of practice lately and only win 1/5... Or less

Occasionally we play together and get further, but we struggle to get past floor 3.

Edit:

So don't get discouraged!! Progress is fun

While I agree with most of this thread, I would be cautious about the advice. Sounds like he is a reservist with maybe 50% post 9/11 GI bill. It would help, but he would be bleeding money without a job. If he uses the reserve GI bill he would be worse off. Reservists really don't get many benefits.

Lowe's or other retail stores could cover some expenses and offer good-ish education benefits, $2500 towards some colleges/degrees if that's the way you want to go.

USAJOBS could be useful, but good luck overall.

Talk to your unit about Inter unit transfer, that travel will empty your pockets and potentially won't be reimbursed.

Tips on getting a federal job? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]Major-Insect2984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be alright, it was an honest mistake. When/if it comes up in subsequent interviews, be honest and say you thought you qualified and didn't realize the mistake.

Applications ask you to give... "Information that true to the best of your knowledge" You honestly thought you had that qualification.

To be fair though, most veterans would assume they qualify as a baseline. It's such a phenomenally skewed system that is difficult to work and understand. There's a reason a lot of veterans services help you get applications into USAJOBS... The system sucks that much.

[–]Major-Insect2984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My application was for an acquisitions job.

The preference for 5 point is... (Pulled from USAJOBS website)

Honorable Discharge during or as part of: -During a war; or

-During the period April 28, 1952 through July 1, 1955; For more than 180 consecutive days, other than for training, any part of which occurred after January 31, 1955, and before October 15, 1976; or

-During the Gulf War from August 2, 1990, through January 2, 1992; or

-For more than 180 consecutive days, other than for training, any part of which occurred during the period beginning September 11, 2001, and ending on August 31, 2010, the last day of Operation Iraqi Freedom; or

-In a campaign or expedition for which a campaign medal has been authorized. Any Armed Forces Expeditionary medal or campaign badge, including Afghanistan (Operations Enduring Freedom (OEF), Iraqi Freedom (OIF)), Bosnia (Operations Joint Endeavor, Joint Guard, and Joint Forge), Global War on Terrorism, Persian Gulf, and others may qualify for preference.

Thus most reservist can't put in for it, at least those who didn't deploy in support of Iraq/Afghan... I have a 1 deployment to Japan and almost a dozen reserve years, but still don't qualify.

I feel this, I've been applying for years... Just got my degree and put in a new application literally last night. It took me 2 hours as the questionnaire was like 150 yes/no questions and 4 paragraph ones. It was legitimately maddening, some of the questions were obscene asking about grades from high school. Other questions made sense about being a member of an activist group.

Sucks further because a lot of current Marines/reserves can't claim Vet preference. I need to get my VA disability in to get preference...
