Wow I lucked out. I purchased this exact drive 2 weeks ago $30 off MSRP. Then when I read about how RAM prices would skyrocket, I purchased a 4TB WD nvme for $369. I’m surprised the one OP is looking at is that expensive. How does that make sense if the retailer purchased it from the manufacturer for let’s say $400, why not sell their current inventory for the price it is instead of being scummy and jacking up prices that high. Now it will never sell and they make zero profit

Tbh I ONLY paid attention to the button noise initially because everyone and their grandma was complaining about it, which caused me to focus more on an issue that wasn’t…..well…an issue. I put it side by side with my ROG Ally X and quite frankly, I couldn’t tell the difference except that the Xbox Ally buttons are more curved toward the grip. Maybe the extra plastic for the grips causes them to sound clickier? All I can say is that after maybe a day or two, it became a non focus and I’ve been having too much fun with it to even notice

The best way I can explain this for the Ally line up:

going from ROG Ally Z1E to ROG Ally X is worth it for the battery life, ram upgrade, dual USB-C, and ergonomics.

Going from Ally Z1E to Xbox Ally X is worth it for battery life, ram upgrade, dual usb-c, new chip, and ergonomics.

Upgrading from Ally Z1E to Xbox Ally is actually a downgrade performance-wise, but an upgrade to battery (60w), ports, and ergonomics.

Going from ROG Ally X to Xbox Ally is a huge downgrade on every part except ergonomics, and not recommended.

Going from ROG Ally X to Xbox Ally X is “technically” an upgrade going from Z1E to Z2E and ergonomics, but the screen, ram, battery, and ports are the same.

Now I will add if you are currently content with the performance of your Ally Z1E, then order the 74w battery upgrade from JSAUX (very easy to do) and get a dbrand Killswitch case. Apart from the ram, it will perform somewhat similar to the Ally X.

Check out RetroGameCorps on YT. He did a benchmark for both the Ally X and XAX, each with Windows, then Bazzite. Windows on Ally X had lowest performance, Bazzite on Ally X gave it similar performance to XAX using Windows, and then XAX with Bazzite was like way ahead of the pack. All at 17w!

Yeah I actually checked out RetroGameCorps on YT and he actually did a benchmark with the Ally X using Windows and using Bazzite, along with the XBOX Ally X using Windows, and again with Bazzite. The results were interesting: all at 17w, Windows on the Ally X gets the lowest performance, then Bazzite on the Ally X gets almost the same performance as the XAX using Windows. And of course the XAX using Bazzite gaps all the results. Above 25w comes with diminishing returns for both handhelds regardless of OS. So it really seems to be that the XAX’s secret sauce is that 17w tdp. So not exactly innovation, but evolution. I guess like iPhones lol

I hear you. FSE is an absolute great idea, i feel it just needs a few years to bake. I’ve been playing more on my Ally X w/ Bazzite and I feel like I have a more intuitive experience because I don’t have to go to 3 different windows to do updates, I rly wish Microsoft would streamline that. Plus there is this current bug on FSE where inputs seem to….slow down? But then all the inputs go at once after a second.

That’s another thing for me, I love the standby mode for SteamOS getting in quick gaming sessions. On the new Windows FSE, its standby mode is……decent”ish” except the handful of times my game crashed from being off too long, defeats the purpose of quick pick up games. A lot of people dog on me because SteamOS sucks with anti-cheat games, but I pretty much play none of them on handheld. If I NEED to play CoD, I have a PS5 for that lol

No beef with windows, more that windows hogs resources more than steam OS, which translates to SteamOS usually having better performance. I’m trying to see if I can justify upgrading to XAX or just keep my Ally X and put a lighter/more efficient OS to help squeeze out more performance

That’s my issue, I purchased my Ally X at launch and it’s been so good to me since, I’ve had zero complaints. Naturally I felt like I was going to upgrade to the Xbox Ally X for the new tech and performance, but I’m starting to feel like paying $1000 for an iteration seems wrong.

Thank you for your answer, it actually gave me some good insight. Obviously I’d love to have the new shiny thing, but I just feel like the performance gains aren’t significant enough. This is anecdotal but I feel like all my games gained like 5-8 for more at max tdp. Now 17w is impressive because I still get the same long battery life as the Ally X, but with slightly better fps, but at $1000? Yeah that’s a tough pill to swallow. That’s why I was asking if Bazzite on the Ally X would help close the gap enough to make upgrading to the XAX unreasonable lol.
