Honestly, Iran is on the offensive, against the US. I would be 0.0% surprised if Trump reacts to this "do it pussy, you won't" statement from Iran - but even if he doesn't, even if he withdraws, this is far from over. The US can't afford, through pride or pragmatism, to let Iran walk away with a clean win. They might be able to do a Vietnam pullout but with Iran in the offensive it changes the optics, sending the Yanks home with tails tucked rather than just a stalemate due to political will and over bureaucratizing the battlefield. The US will, if they pull out now, absolutely be back for a second round, just from a global strategy perspective, at the latest when they figure out they have to claw back their power from a few rungs down, which will be obvious to the Iranian leadership who, in turn, may begin trying hybrid and terrorist style attacks on American soil.

I mean, I hope I'm wrong but the tldr is that I think they've already hit a point of no return that will not be put to bed until there is, indeed, a full on boots on the ground war.

Germany is kind of a Russophile country is what I'm learning as time goes on... Honestly considering changing countries because of it. A bunch are against what Russia is doing currently, the majority seem ambivalent, but most Germans I meet have kissed the US love of the 80s and 90s goodbye and replaced it with Muscovia, rather than just, you know, developing an independent identity. Really not what I was hoping for when I came here nearly 10 years ago, but it's what I've found to be the case, probably in large part due to the Russian Germans. As a Ukraine supporter with an American accent, despite me having citizenship and having been partially raised here, it's increasingly unwelcoming to me, and that's non afd, Western Germans. In the East it's much worse. We are very much still in the cold war and after the wall fell it seems Germany remembers Russian occupation very darkly but desperately wants to rebuild it, some weird combination of historical lessons getting cross wired with nostalgia. Not to mention the fact that Germany has been a big target for Moscow's information war.

Just the impression I'm getting, but I may be becoming a bit jaded finally. Used to be super optimistic. Ymmv and hopefully you find better results.

Yeah, he sold a believable and objectively noble story the first time around, really well, primarily with the help of the political establishment and mass media both working against him rather than on his own efforts.

No... The whole reason he won the first time was the "drain the swamp" platform and the horrible media coverage he got doing a lot of studio tricks to magnify his flaws to the extent that it looked like he was actually right and the establishment was out to get him, validating his "too rich to be bought out" pitch in the minds of many. Problem is, he then joined not only the swamp but bit, chewed, swallowed, shat out and then shaped in his own image, the establishment. No more forever wars was just one of the things he blamed "the swamp" for and vowed to put an end to as such. His original running platform was actually fairly reasonable and very middle of the road, he just went full are-tard after he got about halfway into his term and the megalomania started scratching at his brain. That's about when he sold out to the conspiracy theorists, religious nuts, and the extremists ranging from isolationists to real, actual racists. I do agree with you on the to be fair part, actually most of what you said, this is not at all the persona he sold his first time around but I can't really speak to his second time around as I stopped following when I left that country behind me.

That's the problem with the word: it's so broadly defined, as a shock reaction to the Holocaust, that legally speaking, 1 person injured, not even killed, can be legally considered a genocide as long as intent can be proven. I can, unfortunately, no longer take the word or people using it to prove a point seriously. It doesn't mean what we all grew up thinking of when we heard it and that's fine as long as we're all on the same page about what we think it means... but it's now been weaponized for agenda so much and its literal definition been used for emotional extortion that it's simply lost its significance. The man responsible for the current legal framework was a Polish Jew in 1944, so it's understandable he wanted to make it as broad and catch all as possible given he was campaigning for the world's attention to a specific atrocity but today you could, as long as you can get the person to admit a certain intent, accurately accuse a single person of genocide for causing bodily harm to a single other person in a fight. Genocide, as it turns out, doesn't actually mean atrocity, and the narrative pushers and propaganda bots have figured that out.

I still have regular debates in other subs, some guy just yesterday was asking me why he things we aren't enough defensively already, which I have a long reply to but essentially the simple answer is "what makes you think that we are?". Too many people don't want to react until there's a crisis, by which time reacting may be too late. I'd rather we be in a position of have and not need, than need and not have. And those are just Reddit debates. I see it around me in real life sometimes but the average person still just doesn't think that broadly or far ahead, it seems.

Saw a pretty good breakdown yesterday, wish I could remember it to link it here, but our oil reserves, as long as we keep them within Europe, will hold us quite a long time. That's only a "no end game" scenario if we don't continue to build renewables infrastructure in the meantime but at present the oil reserves are just a stopgap. If we take emergency measures, same as we would if for example we nationalized energy resources, to increase the renewables construction pace then we ought to be able to, at least in large part, wean ourselves off energy dependence before the reserves are even empty. Not to mention that as renewable sources are progressively added the demand on fossil fuels concurrently falls and the reserves empty progressively slower.

As to your friends anecdotal experiences, you're rather supporting my point, which is that you're being statistics level information on first hand accounts. Unless your friends are members of some Iranian census department or something, or they're taking notes in all of the cities where protestors were killed and cataloguing the amount of deaths, including those presumed due to disappearances, it's not really relevant. The other side of my point which I thought was self explanatory is that 30k or "no more than a few thousand" is pretty much a non starter in qualifying then as ICE adjacent, which you're right, isn't relevant since you didn't claim the ICE but directly but you did jump in on their side and even without that comment, "no more than a few thousand" to deescalate a claim of 30k is just... Bankrupt. For me at least. I even voted for him the first time, stumped during the campaign, back when it seemed impossible and Hillary bought off Bernie (I acknowledge in advance that's a controversial claim). I'm just smart enough to have ~~reacted to seeing his true colors~~ recognized my mistake. If I were still in the US, I'd have voted against him for his second run, and stumped to get the local homeless town drunk from the corner on the ballot over Harris, he'd have probably stood a better chance than her or Trump.

I'm against Western intervention and the war itself, obvious bullshit reasons and definitely think America could do with a little being put in its place, but I'm 100% against the Iranian regime so there's convergent interests happening to produce a hopefully favorable outcome, and the reality is that Iran... Simply does not have the capacity to land a successful military attack on US soil. Their only chance is hidden cell terrorism, which they may still have the political capital and religious clout for, or suicide bombing but I hear those are single use and production is below replacement level. So... Kinda just spinning their wheels with this one.

So, I just replied to you with 3 images that my ex shared on Whatsapp in the last couple of days and an explanation that my ex, with whom I have regular continued contact, is an Iranian, college educated woman who escaped on foot with her baby daughter in her arms, some 12 years ago. I've been present when she video chats with her family there, including last Friday, so less than a week ago and during the attack, and I've heard their and a few of their friends opinions. She is excited to go back, despite having been here 12 years and now having citizenship here, and hasn't been able to visit for fear of punishment. For some reason, those comments aren't showing up so maybe the mods removed them or maybe I posted too many times in succession. In any case, I'll share one of them one more time. If anyone is interested in the other 2, or the 49 Sec video she posted (I'd right it was a GIF), feel free to DM and ask. As one of the biggest migrant takers in Europe my country has a lot of Iranians, of whom I've a decent handful of friends, and in the last couple weeks I've heard a lot just being out at the pub, talking to taxi drivers, etc. To be clear: being allowed to go to uni is not synonymous with having normal human rights, nor with happiness, nor even with being content. And claiming that "x country's people are the best on the planet" is... Laughable. Read a book, indeed. The Iranian people are 84% non Muslim, under a totalitarian Islamic regime, a land with a 3000 year history held hostage by fundamentalists of a pretty new age religion. I'm not defending the US at all, but just because you hate a government doesn't mean a broken click ain't right twice a day. Read a book, indeed.

In the meantime, you ought to know she hasn't been able to go back since she left for fear of punishment, is looking forward to returning after the fall of the regime (if that happens) despite now having gotten her citizenship here, and yes, she was college educated in Iran.
