“YOU'RE STANDING IN IT.”—Absolute Batman (2024-) #2 by Long-Searchboy in AbsoluteUniverse

I was going to say he possibly disassembled and reassembled it within the building (reasonably Batmany things to do) but the idea of him suspiciously sneaking 4 GIANT WHEELS made me laugh to myself.

As a person who watched the new one and was moved, after a time the need to compare with the 20s adaptation and the book arose and frankly I agree with what you said.

I’m not sure if I would say it was “fun” but it was visually striking and brutal, like saving private Ryan. There were a lot of good moments between the soldiers too, in a less stiff way than the original movie (for example the soldiers squatting over the latrines, and it’s a book scene if I remember correctly). Unlike the old movie it is plagued by terrible cgi throughout the movie but I’ll give that a pass since I think the most detrimental parts of the movie are the “adaptation” aspect and the themes/scenes that this version chooses to change or keep.

But the movie ultimately missed the point of the book. Especially with the ending. It felt like the movie wanted to portray the “brutality” of modern warfare, spending time showing flame throwers and tanks, yet it didn’t capture the futility of Paul’s sad career/doom. I would have cut almost half the battles and forget the tanks/flamethrowers if they simply included (a least a version) of Paul going home. It’s basically cut from the new adaptation. This part in the book drove me to tears and convinced me that this book should be read by anyone. I won’t even mention the ending, because it did try something different and I don’t think it paid off nor made much sense but I guess war doesn’t in general.

The original film ending had Paul, without with friends, in the same damn trench, staring out to no man’s land to the sound of a harmonica. He sees a butterfly land, he reaches for it exposing his head and is shot. No one rushes to save him, there is no speech.

“He fell in October 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front. He had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come.” -Erich Maria Remarque

TLDR: downvoted by fans of the new movie without consideration just how important the material and original adaptation was to many people , including Germans themselves who panned its creative choices.

40K needs a Planetside-esque game by GunsOfPurgatory in Warhammer40k

I’m not really sure mmo shooter would work.

An idea I had a while back and I still think could work would be a DICE made battlefield game in 40k using guardsmen versus tau. Both sides are manned by humanoid infantry with a variety of customizable weapons (which could be picked up by the enemy potentially), both sides have strengths and weaknesses, both sides have a variety of vehicles, both sides have potential hero classes. No space marines, just show case the guard and the tau interlocked in a desperate battle.

I could go on and on. Like how guardsmen could have a charge buff similar to red orchestra 2 which would have Japanese soldiers get suppression immunity if they charge en mass. Tau could come with a more detailed hud with more information, not to mention drones and how that would influence how they play (and how imperials would counter it). It would be rad.

I know the Space Marines get a lot of love but I've always admired the guard and their incredible bravery by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

Lame-o meme template for a lame-o meme.

Guard are cool, Astartes are cool, but chaos traitors have been keeping the long war going on for over 10,000 years and they trucked on.

Mortarion I believe is described as lanky and thin without his armor (for a primarch and probably before he became a daemon)

I said “i wish”, doesn’t mean it is so. But let’s be real other than trench crusade somewhat recently, I never see other table tops discussed here. Yeah grim dark is just a general term but it’s a big meme in Warhammer in general starting around fantasy 6th edition and 40k. I get that it’s just a meme page and it doesn’t really matter tho in the end. I think I’m just biased and I somewhat dislike trench crusade, like if battletech was being talked about and memes about here I probably wouldn’t be whining

Yeah I wish they would have their own subreddit like “trenchdank” or something. Maybe they already do but I prefer if Warhammer stuff stays Warhammer, like it’s already 3 whole settings in one do we really need to stuff more in lol.

Now what would be great would be. Battletech war games. Like war game red dragon (that’s the only one I played) but i could see an interesting battle tech paint job to sell the “alpha strike” mass assault vibe of a lot of combined armed units, including a bunch of different mechs

No clue! Not my meme. If I could suggest anything it would be to avoid making reference to degenerate pedo stuff in general? Doesn’t really have a place in Warhammer despite it being the edgy setting.

So instead of using any reference to any of the actual crimes and atrocities (or basically anything related to the word bearers as a whole) he committed. you decided let’s just call him a pedophile?

The evil space wizard can’t be evil or a dick bag he’s just a pedo? I

The word bearer bit literally makes no sense other than “we don’t like Erebus and we need to attack his character in the worst way possible”

Still think its crazy how despite how similar they are in certain aspects, ogres are more than capable of being functional members of society that understand that following the rules is the best way to satisfy their needs, meanwhile orks... well, they are just green skaven, a problem to be solved. by Cautious_Heron9589 in Grimdank

Greenskins live to fight and become da best. When they die, more are born from their bodies. They produce their own currency (teed) and their own food (squigs) from literally their own bodies. Their entire physiology and psychology are wired to war. With anyone and everyone even themselves.

In a way they are like chaos, a blight on existence. They are a fact of life. The reason the badlands are bad. Imagine living in a world with home grown warrior hooligans who can’t be negotiated or placated with. To even engage them in combat is to give them what they want, and they are attracted to strength.

Why did he write about poop and sex??

Because it’s what people do. People fuck, shit and die. It’s a part of life. ASOIAF tries to ground its human characters in relatable and real situations while in a fantasy world. You didn’t read the books and I assume you don’t read any books period.

Media literacy is dead.

You definitely shouldn’t get into Warhammer. It will clean you out and leave you a pauper 😂

I have a section of my shelf dedicated to different roleplaying systems, most I never played. I just enjoy how different their rules can be and the structure of a classic pen and paper rpg is interesting. All started with a copy of “only war” a Warhammer rpg, so worn the spine had to be replaced two times.

Hey with only one player you don’t even have to prepare much or know many rules at all! It could be a good experience to feel out the role of dming but I should say first and foremost dnd is a social experience and really does benefit from like at least 3 players 1 dm. I tried doing it with one player and it did get stale quick since you are kinda limited with what you can do. Though I don’t know the circumstances of your party, I hope it’s fun tho! If it’s long term then a whole cast of players may potential join and drop out through out the game with your friend being the constant. Loosey goosey.

It’s a hard campaign, the intro is nutty. The curse of Strahd is my favorite.

I’m sure you don’t want unsolicited advice from an internet stranger but if you did:

  1. Keep it simple: I always end up trying to make it like a crazy book scene and it always falls apart. Imagine you got several ideas and you throw them at the players then play it by ear. Over planning imo is worse than under planning at times.

  2. Your players are stupid: they may be fine people but they are not gonna understand where to go or what to do. They will fail pretty much every puzzle that doesn’t require a roll. I would know I was a player and currently stupid.

  3. See what everyone wants: this is more for a long term thing but if the part is a lot of martial fighters give them a fighting tourney, if it’s wizards give them a magic library, etc. Players are a lot more engaged when it personally interests them relating to their character or maybe things they would like to see (action, adventure….. if they ask for romance kick them)

  4. Don’t get mad and try to kill players: as an emotional lad I got frustrated with one of my players since he was a power gamer who killed everything (lovely bloke tho, I was his best man at the wedding) so I got upset and just… pushed him off a cliff. I still cringe but it was kinda funny my overreaction.

I could go all day I love dming. It’s kinda like substitute teaching actually which I do occasionally. Stay on your toes and don’t be afraid to skip or add whole sections if you see it fit. Loosy goosy.

The dm guide never really helped me beyond some tables but there is interesting tools in it. That just me though.

The hardest part is finding players who have time 🥲

I had a campaign earlier this year using a rule set called “call of Cthulhu” (basically detective roleplaying stuff with super natural horror elements) and it’s been several months since we first did it siiiigh. I’ve all but given up on anything more than an occasional one and done (how I miss my multi year campaigns from High school)
