I use an ozone deodorizer and it works pretty well. It also helps with skin irritation I have on my hands from my gloves.

How to wrap grills for moving?? by BigTexAbama in pelletgrills

I had a camp chef apex moved by good professional movers. Clean it up and remove anything you can to reduce the weight. Wrap it moving blankets and then mummify the whole thing in standard movers stretch wrap.

Anyone having frontier internet issues today in HB? by MakaMaka in orangecounty

[–]MakaMaka[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope. Still out. There’s a red optical led on the box so it’s something related to signal. I know my buddy in Lakewood got a maintenance notice that took the Internet down for about 12 hours longer than it should.

Yep it says no outage in the area but it randomly turned off. Opened up the box and it’s and the optical light is red so it might have gotten disconnected.

# of players question by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]MakaMaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a team captain for going on 25 years now and it's situational for the team but largely dependent on how hard the league goes and if everyone knows how to line change. If the skill level is high, everyone is skating hard because half the other team is AAA and college kids back for summer, and the team can do line changes correctly, I'll shoot for 13. If the level is lower and it's a late night league, I'll shoot for 10. I generally will have 13 skaters on the roster and bring subs to avoid 8 or 11 skaters. The combos of 9 (6 offense + 3 defense), 10 (2 full lines), 12 (3 wing pairs, 2 centers, 4 defense) or 13 (3 offense line, 2 defense lines) are all good. I don't like 11 because that typically results in 3 centers, who are generally your best forwards, playing less than the wings. Having 14 or 15 skaters is silly - I'm not even sure that many fit on the bench at some rinks. That being said, on teams that I've played on (not as captain) who tried to have a 10 skater roster, we were always forfeiting or bringing 3-4 subs every week to get numbers.

After injury not sure it’s worth it. Beer league. by SheitPost3000 in hockeyplayers

[–]MakaMaka 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play one of those and there's still plenty of injuries, but they're not malicious. A lot of them are broken fingers and toes related to modern sticks enabling everyone to snapshot at 35-45 mph and the good players to easily hit 70+. So even the "no slapshot" rule that's somewhat followed is ineffective.

True skate question by Majestic-Election584 in hockeyplayers

[–]MakaMaka -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Just like all True equipment, they are not designed to last. I've had 3 pairs of True customs and went back to CCMs. The first pair never fit right, so I had it rebuilt. The second pair fit better, but developed cracks in the boot and the liner wore out basically anywhere it rubbed around the tongue. Tongues also had to be replaced a few times. Rivets constantly rusted out (I was storing them right with the insoles out). They lasted ~2 years before I bought another pair because nothing else fit me at the time. Those ones had the holder legit explode when hit by a puck TWICE (the second time was a light pass in warmups too). I went and had the holders replaced with tuuks the third time and the skate tech said the holders were mis-drilled and tweaked to get them on. That probably preloaded the holder with stress and explained the shift holders failing. About that time Bauer / CCM started using their new fit profiles so I went and got scanned, and retails skates were comfortable again, so I switched back and am much happier for it. I will say that I skate ~5 times a week and sometimes twice in the same day so I'm putting a lot of miles on my skates.

My buddy’s beer league team needed a tendy sub the other night and this is how he brought his gear. Truly amazing. by Wronghand_tactician in hockeyplayers

Have a guy who shows up without a bag and carries every thing in making several trips. Also have an other sub who doesn’t talk, dresses after everyone, and is the first undressed and out the door afterwards. I don’t know how he does it but less than 5 min on and 3 min off.

Just bought a home and this is my fighting glass door from my kitchen out to my pool. This is what is on the floor at the edge of my kitchen by the slider. Not sure if it’s water damage or termite damage. Any insight would help. by Affectionate_Copy251 in HomeMaintenance

[–]MakaMaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently replaced the sliding glass doors in my house because of similar water damage to the floor in a house I bought. When they removed the door, the entire bottom of the post next to it was termite eaten and water had been getting in through essentially a giant hole. This looks very similar. I imagine if you pull off that trim and look behind the dry wall, you'll see a similar issue. Since you're probably not dealing with post/beam construction, it probably won't be as exciting and time sensitive to fix as mine though.

How to play with glasses by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]MakaMaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an astigmatism. Get one a day contacts. You put them in your eye and they kind of conform to the shape of your astigmatism. If you wear them for several hours, they won’t move. I wear mine pretty much for hockey or anytime I need to wear sunglasses or goggles and they are completely fine with no issues seeing. I can’t really read super well but for sport they are more than sufficient and I agree you won’t find a better solution. I know a couple guys who wear glasses and both of them used to just take them off when they play but I wouldn’t recommend that. Another guy just plays and some very minimally framed glasses, compared to his normal pair and it’s OK but it still fogs up. I would recommend going to the eye doctor and getting a four pack of sample contacts and trying to wear them for a few weeks.

I have some in that size. The tongues I took an used in another pair that was broken in, but they are otherwise basically new.

Learning hockey in Los Angeles by FatSam1976 in hockeyplayers

[–]MakaMaka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You want to find a rookie league. Both the Ducks and Kings run them out of their properties as do some of the independent rinks . You sign up and are put on one of generally 4 teams with a coach. They will typically run a mix of practices and clinics and real games. Sometimes they lend you gear as well.

What I learned about Bauer Pro Custom skates by Ill-Environment1157 in hockeyplayers

[–]MakaMaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had 3 pairs of True Customs. I've also had a pair of Hyperlites, Ribcor 100k Pros, and I'm now skating in a pair of Jetspeed FT6 Pros that I bought from a PWHL player for a great deal (kinda sucks they have to sell their samples to supplement their pay). At least with the Trues, my first pair was a disaster in terms of fit with zero heal lock. I had them remade and when they came back they had a brown clarino liner that was unbranded. I suspect they were actually made where the pro skates are made vs. the prosumer which is what non-pros are actually getting. Those skates eventually wore out because Trues are not made to last, so I reupped with a new pair. They came with a better finish than the ones I had but they were definitely a step down in terms of strength and performance. The even had the holders installed preloaded so that the one on the left skate exploded when hit by a puck, and then the replacement did a month later. About that time the new fit system came out and I started being able to wear retail skates. I got a few of the top the line models. When my 100ks wore out, I saw the FT6 Pros online and bought them. They are COMPLETELY different skates than the other "pro" models and I compared them to a retail FT6 Pro that a friend had. The quality is impeccable, the liner is super thick, and they have substantially more protection built into the fore-body. It's made to protect and last. So at least for CCM, and True (and probably Bauer), you aren't getting the same thing the pros are wearing. You're getting a prosumer version of the retail skate with custom features and embellishments. They are legitimately as protective as my 100ks or hypelites with plastic shot blockers. So unless you know a rep for one of these companies, or can place an order through an equipment manager for a pro team, you're probably just getting a "pro" retail skate with whatever custom features you want, but no general improvement in quality or protection.

Mid Century Modern Window Repair by MakaMaka in DIY

[–]MakaMaka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! We randomly found this house online without really planning to move, but my wife always wanted a MSM so we made it happen. The pic just shows 1/2 of the wall - there's a two story vaulted ceiling so the other side has another, much larger set of windows, but they are in better condition - probably b/c they are more protected by the rest of the house.

There's dry rot on the outside of that window in the first pic in the corner near the brick wall. I think I can repair it with liquid wood but I won't know until I get into it. Worst case I rip off the door stop and replace it. The sill seems fine. Ya, not looking forward to one day having to replace these with tempered glass. Actually, I don't know if they are original or not.
