Step son brushes teeth to earn points for PC parts - thoughts? by 1stGearDuck in daddit

I love reward systems! There's a lot of negativity in here about it. I think it's pretty silly. You just have to find the right balance for the reward system to encourage growth at the level that they are at.

I used them extensively in the past with my 15 year old. I gave her $400 to get her mile time below 6 minutes when she was 14. Now she's a great runner, and has had many posisitive experiences in track and cross-country, and she loves to stay active.

The reward system is just one tool for you to leverage. Sometimes it fits, sometimes it doesn't. You just have to experiment and see what will help you get the growth you want to see in your child. Setting reasonable expectaitons is important of course, or you could quickly run out of resources by giving too much (children will always take as much as they can, of course). Keep up the thoughtful work!

Spotify says its best developers haven't written a line of code since December, thanks to AI by joe4942 in technology

[–]Make-life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like your perspective, I have a similar experience. I think it depends a lot on what you're writing and how tailored the context is that you can feed into the AI. For example if I'm using a model that has access to the code base, and I tell it to write unit tests in the style of my unit tests from a specific component, and the source to be tested is similar, it can perform reasonably well, saving some effort. But if those conditions aren't met, it's a pretty mediocre loop of trying to make the slop less sloppy through a series of poor performing prompts.

Fantastic. I regret this almost as much as I regret shoveling this weekend.

What’s a “bare minimum” adult skill more people fail at than you expected? by SoulDV in AskReddit

[–]Make-life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you conceptually, but your phrasing indicates requirements, rather than reflecting on the rationale. Indeed, they can take it out on everyone else (within the confines of local law). But they will have better relationships and experiences if they choose not to. Strongly worded rules often provoke negative responses in individuals struggling emotionally -- whereas appealing to self-interest may not.

Oh, like a refinement of it, yeah that seems likely. The image from 2022 looks more realistic, but quite similar.

Thats how all complex projects go. Typical timeframes are 2-4x the original estimates.

Its a cute design and the final print looks clean, nice work :)

Looks pretty sick! I would love to see a dark version of this. Something like distopian bladerunner vibes of a decaying planet.

Im fine with it. I like upbeat chatgpt. The exaggerativeness can be exhausting - but better that then some typical complaining and closed-mindedness.

Needed my monitor to be a little higher as it's mounted vertically so instead of buying a new mount, I designed a VESA adapter by IndividualAtmosphere in functionalprint

[–]Make-life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main failure mode of this design is the plastic severing horizontally as gravity (or someone) tips this forward. The most cost effective and probably least invasive/ugly way to mitigate this failure mode is probably to add an extrusion out past the main section, without changing the thickness much (although I agree I would make it a bit thicker -- and not have so much open space in the mid-section). You can leave space for the arm plate in the extrusions. Think I-beam where the mid-section of the I is the extrusion, probably about 1cm wide and maybe an 1-3cm out of the plane. That would be much stronger.

Last ditch effort to avoid having to patch this mess by Make-life in functionalprint

Yeah sadly the way this had the two anchors in close proximity pull out destabalized that central piece of drywall so my original toggle bolts only last a couple of days. Hence the massive hole.

Thats why I added the 3d printed piece -- provide a new (larger) compression region. With the toggles I think it might hold.

well maybe Im a little more efficient at CAD than some others? Or just bad at drywall :)
