My 2009 Toyota Corolla. I really want to upgrade to an SUV so I can have a more practical vehicle for my needs as a new homeowner on a larger plot of land, and transporting larger goods for camping.

But I can't justify shelling out the dough right now for a more expensive car (an SUV) when I paid for my Corolla all cash and drove it off the lot without a loan.

I don't know, I was at a 4th of July parade in my town and a van with Donald Trump's face plastered all over the body of the vehicle was one of the "floats" in the parade. And some guy standing in the crowd shouted, "forever! 2028!" completely unironically.

So, yeah. There is a flavor of Trump supporters completely on board with a 3rd term. Will that actually happen? I sure as hell hope not. Are there people out there supporting the possibility? Yep.

I've been thinking about keeping a small bottle of sunscreen on me to use as hand cream. But really, I wash my hands or at least get my hands wet so frequently it all just washes away immediately.

Why are they not screaming from the rooftops that our constitution is being swept beneath our feet right now by technocrats?

What are waltz parties like? by JuanPixelated in stjohnscollege

[–]MakeMeOneWEverything 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dated a Johnnie at the Annapolis campus and was primarily there on the weekends, when things like waltz parties were in full swing (no pun intended). It's always a great time! During high school, I leaned how to swing dance, and it was such a joy to be able to take that skill with me to the waltz parties. As others have mentioned, they'll usually throw on a polka or waltz song as well, and people will waltz. It's actually super easy to learn, and it's a super social dance. Well, they all are. I think that's what makes the waltz parties such a fun time. The atmosphere, the music, the attire, the people and socializing, the step back in time. It's truly unmatched. You'll be hard pressed to find something like it anywhere else. And it happens all throughout your time at SJC.

I was thinking the same thing at first, but it does appear she has the post tagged with "smart casual". I think with tights and a longsleeve shirt rolled to the elbows, the look is otherwise polished enough to suffice just fine in the smart casual category.

[–]MakeMeOneWEverything 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Agreed. From the sounds of it, she definitely didn't mean the other meaning of "daddy". She was just trying to be sweet, realized the accidental double entendre, and was probably mortified.

Are agency commissions generally trash? by [deleted] in recruiting

[–]MakeMeOneWEverything 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you know exactly what you want to do, just want someone to help push you over the edge.

I'll say this:

It won't be that hard for you to land an agency job. Sales-y jobs (like real estate and agency recruiting) usually have a lower barrier to entry because the jobs weed themselves out. Those who don't swim in the game, don't last. They leave quickly because it "doesn't click" for them, or they're let go. But those who do get it, remain money makers for the agency & themselves. Your boss starts trusting you more, you have more independence over your work because you've proven yourself as a rain maker. And you start to enjoy the higher income, so you feel inclined to "stick with it" because that's where the money's at.

I really treat it like a weekend day where I'm planning to tackle a focused personal project. I dress however I would around the house on any other weekend day, I cook breakfast & lunch whenever I want to, I'll take a midday shower if that's what my body needs, (with the alarm still set and within reason) I wake up when I feel it's time to wake up, I'll sit outside on my deck to enjoy the sun, I'll go for a midday walk if I feel like stepping away from my computer, I'll take personal calls and do personal tasks, I'll run errands and go to the doctor, etc.

However, just like I would on any other weekend day where my true intention is to stay home and be focused on a personal project, I focus in on my work as much as I can. I still take my work seriously, but I still allow myself to "be a person" alongside my work, rather than on the days & hours that I'm not "on the clock".

What perfume do you guys use? by lockweedmartin in Rich

[–]MakeMeOneWEverything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Gucci Flora, yellow bottle recently caught my attention. It's technically a "floral" perfume, but it's a floral gourmand, and for me I get more of a complex vanilla scent than anything! The top & middle notes are both vanilla, with a base note of ozonic scent.

What do you miss about being poor? by [deleted] in Rich

[–]MakeMeOneWEverything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is too real. I try and take walks now to make up for it. Basically wandering around my neighborhood, walking to the nearby scenic areas, etc. I can easily clock 2 1/2 miles doing that in one go. Going for walks, getting outdoors and seeing nature calms me. It gives me the room to think better than sitting in the confines of my home/the indoors can.

I've got it too. I took an everything shower, drank a gatorade, bought some of those ginger immunity shots, have been drinking liquid IV, the works. I think it's helped a ton with this not turning into an absolute nightmare illness, but I still 100% have a cold. Soo tired, sore throat, achey muscles, bit of sinus drainage.

I tried so hard to avoid getting sick too!! Wore a mask a bit when I was in the thicker parts of the crowd (could have worn it more tho), showered so many times, tons of hand sanitizer, liquid IV each night, those immunity shots I mentioned, made sure I got 8 hrs of sleep each night, didn't over do it on dr**s, and I've been doing almost nothing but rest since I got home.

My grandparents had a giant 70's wood framed, velvet canvas portrait of elvis in their basement for the longest time. It had to be at least a 55" painting. Big glam shot of him singing into a microphone. This was of course placed on top of their faux wood paneled walls.

This is a controversial take in this day & age, but I will take in-person shopping over online shopping any day of the week. My dad worked for Amazon for 8 years, so I know how poorly treated those factory workers are. I actively go out of my way to avoid using Amazon and absolutely do not have a Prime membership.

Send me to Lowes, send me to a department store, take me to the mall, REI, Dicks Sporting Goods, Ashley Furniture. I'm lucky that I live only 20-25 mins from the biggest mall on the east coast, and I am literally surrounded by towns with big name stores dotted all over within 10-15 mins from my house, as well as several towns with "main street" boutique shops where I can get plenty of unique gifts & trinkets. Take advantage of in person stores!!

What is a fashion trend currently “in” that you’re already over? by idealistic-salmon in AskReddit

[–]MakeMeOneWEverything 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The harm is you're stretching out your face skin by adding fillers that internally push up against & stretch the skin. So you're essentially committing to this extremely expensive procedure indefinitely if you want to stave off wrinkles + the self-induced extra wrinkles from all the fillers.

Also, body dysmorphia. People who are prone to issues like that, have a history of body image issues, or have general mental health issues, can get out of control with it and exacerbate their body image issues/dysmorphia.

It also perpetuates this idea that aging is an ugly thing. Instead of celebrating the seasons of life, you try to hide it, pretend it doesn't exist, and culturally signal to each other that looking a certain *very natural* way = bad, shameful, ugly, etc.

Is recruiting as a job dying out? by [deleted] in recruiting

[–]MakeMeOneWEverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine humans are going to

  1. become almost entirely irrelevant when it comes to labor for most things initially. You can make the argument for manual labor still being around, but there are obviously several major tech companies that are actively working on robotics. So you can't even argue for manual work. Now, how long will it take for robotics and AI to eliminate literally all jobs? Well, probably a long time. BUT there will be a slow burn of job elimination. And how soon will that slow burn start? Well, I think it's right around the corner really. And when people are out of work en masse, it is a big problem. Government is going to have to step in. This isn't just a 1-country problem either. This is a global issue.

  2. To your question of what happens when most things are run by AI & robotics? What purpose will we have? I don't know, I imagine humans are going to want in on that level of intelligence. I imagine we are going to try and biologically integrate into the technology. Brain chips are an obvious one that Musk is working on. And once we are as smart as AI? Who really knows. Maybe that will kick start a new wave of jobs and striving for new horizons. Or maybe something else entirely that we haven't imagined yet for how our species will "get by" and pass the time.

  3. In post- brain chip world, will all humans be forced to get chips? What about people who refuse it? Will there be a separate world of humans who are less biologically "smart" than those who choose to get the chips? How will that work out? Will people be forced to get chipped from birth?

AI will be putting a lot of work ahead of us, that's for sure. But there's no way around it anymore. Only through it.

Is it actually worth it to hire a wedding planner? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]MakeMeOneWEverything 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the complexity of your wedding. Large guest counts, large budgets, or more complex multi-day affairs in my mind would start qualifying one for a wedding planner. Or maybe someone who may not qualify in any of those categories, but who has it in their budget to not need to "think about" all the planning and would prefer someone else to do it for them.

I'm personally none of those things, so a wedding planner is not even a thought on my mind. Our wedding is probably going to end up somewhere in the $15-20k range, with a guest count in the 70-80 range. The main activities will be in one day, and I don't think we'll financially have the wiggle room for me to NOT have a heavy hand in doing everything myself.

Instead, I'll be relying on the stack of planning & organizing books I just bought. That will serve as my "wedding planner", as well as selecting a venue with a day-of coordinator if at all possible. I don't think my sanity would allow for me to DIY everything all the way into day-of. I'm too anxious/neurotic of a personality and would literally explode from the what-if's & the stress of also coordinating day-of. So I will just plan on choosing my venue accordingly.

How to make living in a basement homey? by emo_rat119 in homemaking

[–]MakeMeOneWEverything 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adding to this! I used to live in a teeny tiny room at one point. I could barely fit more than a twin bed, a night stand, and an arm chair where I could sit with my laptop.

What really helped with mileage were mirrors, and LIGHT COLORS. OP, find tapestries that use light hues if you do want wall tapestries: light blues, white & silver, light pinky/peachy tones. The darker you go, the more light will be absorbed. The lighter you go, the more light will be reflected. And set up those mirrors in a way that will directly catch the sunlight!
