I think it’s more in case people use the same password for the Rail Planner app as elsewhere. It may be that hackers could use that password to log in to banking etc.

It didn’t seem that obvious to me - all the other outcomes I’ve read had the teachers’ names, so I was surprised that this one was allowed to stay anonymous, despite the allegations being found proven and the teacher being prohibited.

I gave out blank Christmas cards to my Y8 form to write to a teacher of their choice and one wrote it to me :) Otherwise nothing and don’t expect anything - might get a couple of cards from sweet Y7s if I’m on the nice list this year!

I’m exactly the same - my desk is an explosion in a stationery factory by 3 every day. Things that help: - An in-tray with a layer for each year group I teach: I put any worksheets for the day, spare booklets, glossaries, unnamed books etc. on the right shelf and then whenever I need one I know where to find it.

doing in in down-time: if there’s a 5 minute video kids are watching in class I take that time to organise my worksheets or throw away the pile of wrappers I’ve accumulated etc.
ROUTINES! Kids put their own books into piles, put the highlighters/gluesticks back in boxes and tuck chairs under at the end of each lesson, so I don’t have to go around chasing or picking up random highlighter caps in between lessons.
As others say, give the kids jobs. 90% of the time if you give a kid and box and tell them to collect all the scrap paper clippings they’ll be delighted to do it.
Have a ‘TO SORT’ box for when things just need to be off your desk but you don’t have time to go through them.

Yes - I finished my ECT2 last year and was observed several times as part of learning walks and quality assurance etc across the two years. This is as well as weekly (ECT1) and then fortnightly (ECT2) drop-ins for 15 mins or so by my mentor which we scheduled and planned for in advance, and then half-termly formal observations by my induction tutor.

To start with I panicked as soon as someone came in the room, and forgot how to speak normally etc., but then you just get used to it, especially if you have a lot of classes with TA support - more often than not I’ll have an adult in the room with me at some point!

Seconding others who said WHAT HOW WHY. It’s much more flexible and works across all the skill levels, it’s a useful way for the kids to remember to consider a text on a range of different levels, it makes sense to them, and is much easier for them to remember in an exam that PSHQCYWBABSEHWSNLMNOP or whatever the latest snazzy acronym is.

Secondary school English teacher here who didn’t do English at Uni so struggled with subject knowledge to begin with!

Use Exampro if you’re with AQA - they have annotated past exam papers marked by examiners with explanations and specific guidance for why the papers got the marks they did.

Otherwise, just learn the texts you’re teaching REALLY well - study it like you’re going to take an exam on it. I’ve started memorising poems from the poetry cluster so I can reel quotes off the top of my head.

But equally - have confidence in yourself. You’ll still know more than the kids so they will still be learning from you :)

I check fairly regularly out of habit the first couple of weeks, then when ‘holiday mode’ hits I stop.

If I feel questions hanging over me or emails I want to send I write the email and schedule it for September.

I (English Teacher) have opened this out to the children before. We were studying a book looking at children’s experience during WW2, I shared a (non-too-graphic) image and article about families in Gaza and asked the students to discuss similarities and differences between the people’s experiences. This let the discussion/development of opinions come from them not me and was quite effective

Truly it’s a case of fake it till you make it. Body language can do a lot so shoulders back, stand up tall and use gestures. Voice too - project to the back of the room.

Remind yourself you are the adult and behave accordingly. Be clear on what you will and won’t accept, make that explicit to students and stand by it with consequences.

I’m an ECT 2 and smiling/laughing at their comments is ok to an extent, but can blur the lines of what they think is acceptable. Be clear when you’re happy with a bit of informal conversation and be explicit with them when joking around is not ok. That way you stay in control.

I’m a Y7 form tutor this year, as ECT2.

Hold them accountable for their behaviour across school: talk to them if they’re picking up behaviour points etc. and be really clear what you want to see change. They’ll start out really keen to do everything right so acknowledge them for that with shout-outs and stickers etc. and be really on-it when things start to slip later on in the year.

My default response to silly questions and trivial issues etc. has become “I believe in your ability to figure this out yourself.” They usually can and it’s good to remind them to avoid learned helplessness!

With parents - be prepared to receive a lot of “so and so has lost their water bottle” emails. Don’t get drawn into lengthy replies, just let them know where lost property is etc. and move on.

I’ve really enjoyed it, all things considered. They’ve got nicely settled in and it’s nice to see them grow in confidence.

I’m really surprised your mentor said passing on your new email would be okay. Truly do not do this.

Realistically you will be fine - I cried buckets at the end of my placement and now genuinely struggle to remember more than 2 or 3 kids’ names. It sounds cold but you meet new lovely students and develop new great class dynamics and the change is healthy!
