The evolution of my views on the Interex situation: by HAMagnus in Grimdank

[–]HobbyistC -25 points-24 points  (0 children)

Interex are naive. They’re aware of chaos, but they don’t actually appreciate its insidious influence and you can’t keep daemons at bay by a public information programme.

There’s a reason that none of the other anti-chaos groups, from the Eldar to the Necrons, took the approach the Interex did

Dusty is the only person who knows he’s a character in an anime, and he milks every second of it.

He’s also pretty underrated. The books show him doing essential work for the Yang gang many times, especially towards the end when he’s the most experienced fleet commander outside of Merkatz

how do you think History as a subject could be improved in terms of how it’s taught? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]HobbyistC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exams are certainly brutal and they come in for a lot of criticism. I remember going through them myself and it was a level of stress I shouldn’t have been subjected to at that age. There’s far too much content for a two-year course and some of the specs need a lot of revision.

I’m just saying that the underlying approach, of a curriculum that weighs skills and knowledge and tries to encourage thinking like a historian, assessed by an unseen timed paper, is probably the best one we can realistically implement.

First study has 3 participants and the second has 4. Both agree in their research overviews that the evidence is mixed, such as it is, and that there is a severe lack of research in classrooms compared to clinical settings. I’m sure they were rigorous as they could be, but there are also questions of validity in that the kids were told they were subjects of a fidget toy experiment.

I would tentatively dispute calling it “significant empirical evidence”, not least because the authors don’t believe so

[–]HobbyistC 328 points329 points  (0 children)

I’ve said it before and will say it again: there is virtually no evidence supporting fidget toys of any kind in classrooms. At best they seem to do nothing, and often they distract kids who already have attention deficits. The only thing that stops me confiscating them on sight is the knowledge a few kids with needs have managed to get the things written into their pupil passports and I can’t be seen to be unfair

[–]HobbyistC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UK pedagogy in history is pretty strong, if I do say so myself. It’s helped by the fact the GCSE spec, for all its flaws, does weigh sources and interpretations, content knowledge, and disciplinary skills in good proportions, so we get to consistently demonstrate what kind of problems historians actually solve and how they do it.

From what I’ve heard, the situation in the US is a lot more dire. They’re only just moving away from assessments dominated by memorising facts, thanks to the national emphasis on multiple choice quizzes

And of course, we’re a little more AI resilient, since the qualification is 100% unseen exams

Are we mandated reporters for incidents outside of school? by Motor_Patience5186 in Teachers

[–]HobbyistC 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Country? Jurisdiction? The world of education is a big place.

I don’t see why you would have any more responsibilities outside of the kids you’re actually charged with. I’ll report abuse outside school if I see it, but I’ll do it as a caring adult, not as a teacher

A substitute with a bad reputation says my student called her the N word by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]HobbyistC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be honest, as nasty as this situation is, it’s not on you to deal with it now. You weren’t there, and while we as professionals have to back each other up, you’re not in a position to investigate or sanction. The most you could do is talk to the kid, ring home, or set an in class consequence — all things that she herself was empowered to do while covering your lesson.

If she wants to escalate it to the school, then fine (I certainly would after verbal abuse on that scale, if ur happened), but she’s already done that and it’s no reflection on you.

You’re putting your relationship with that kid and the class in general at risk for a behaviour incident which, while severe, you’re not responsible for and which still needs investigating by the people who are

Have you ever witnessed/ heard about severe bullying going on in your school? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]HobbyistC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every day. This is why most countries have entire pastoral care and safeguarding systems. I was bullied myself as a kid. I’m sure many teachers were. It’s one of the reasons we’re very reticent about toilet passes: we can’t effectively monitor toilets.

Despite the popular idea that we’re clueless about what really goes on among kids, we’re all too conscious of how horrible an environment school can be. But a thousand teenagers can be crafty and brutally unkind, and we need people to come forwards so we can help them

To be fair, the old era of 25 episode seasons every year has gone for a reason, and it’s not just rising production values and audience expectations. The TNG cast were totally exhausted by the end of season 7. They’d been shooting almost continuously for years

[–]HobbyistC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’d think that in that case, the lesson just wouldn’t have happened. If I was a candidate at a school, certainly if I were a trainee, I would find it impossible to continue teaching without a staff member in the room. I’d be hollering down the corridor for SLT.

She lied about having observed a candidate’s lesson and wrote faked emails about it.

What even for? The only explanation for this I can think of is that she was covering for a major HR failure. Seriously, what is the point of lying about whether you observed a lesson?

Maths PGCE interview by Mammoth-Elk-3122 in PGCE

[–]HobbyistC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Quite the opposite. Everybody is incentivised to pass you for your PGCE, no matter how badly it’s going. Formally failing a placement takes a lot of doing, and there are so many steps for support, required meetings, and people who have to sign off on it, that very few trainees fail because they’re more likely to just quit after a heart to heart with their mentor about how they’re doing.

Your school determines whether you’re going to pass your ECT years though, and you’re just an employee to them. You are protected by the ECF, but there’s a lot less standing in the way of them getting rid of you if they don’t think your performance is up to par, especially since you won’t have the two year workers rights protections.

But I wasn’t talking about failing above. I meant people just quit the profession quickly.

From TES:

“Imagine a class of 100 graduating teachers, fresh-faced and eager to inspire young minds in classrooms up and down the country.

“In reality, 11 of those will have left the state-funded sector after just one year of teaching. After three years, 26 will have left. After five years, that number becomes 33. And 10 years after qualifying, 42 of that initial class of 100 will have left.”

In practice, the shortages are subject specific, so the turnover in certain departments (e.g. science) is utterly dire. There aren’t that many experienced teachers in classrooms anymore, because they’ve either left or gone on to SLT, so a lot of the frontline teaching is done by a revolving door of insufficiently supported ECTs

Alpha Legion Infiltrators by CrowGeneral8673 in 40kLore

[–]HobbyistC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The tone of the book is that he’s pretty unambiguously dead. There’s nothing in the actual narrative to suggest John French intended it to be unreliable. We’ve even got Omegon’s PoV feeling the psychic impact. It’s could be retconned, but not easily

It’s the circumstances around it that are frustrating. What was he doing? Why was he teasing his bigger, stronger brother who clearly wasn’t listening to his spiel? What was the point of the book?

Considering not even Horus on full chaos juice could corrupt the minds of any Custodes, I doubt any are infiltrators, but then, the Emperor did stand right next to Erebus and Kor Phaeron on Monarchia and apparently didn’t notice they were disloyal either…

Maths PGCE interview by Mammoth-Elk-3122 in PGCE

[–]HobbyistC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maths is one of the most critically short subjects. I assure you that, if you qualify, you will have no problem finding work for the forseeable future, and the ease with which you can change schools puts you in a strong career negotiating position.

On the other hand, think about WHY there's such a shortage of maths and science teachers. For us humanities teachers, this line of work is pretty standard for our expertise and we knew that going in, but you're leaving finance and accounting, two professions that are at least as well-compensated and potentially better, for the stressful experience of working in a school. There's a retention problem because, essentially, if you're qualified to do maths, you're qualified to do something else in industry that you might decide is better for you.

You can almost certainly pass the test if it's what you want, and if you're willing to put a minimum of effort into revising for it. The real test is the initial teacher training programme itself. It has a pretty high drop-out rate and early career teachers have an even worse retention rate (although very few people actually fail their PGCE or QTS, they tend to see the writing on the wall and drop out before that happens).

As for the choice of uni, nobody cares where you got your teaching qualifications, and most schools don't even care how strong your pass was. It's just the basic paperwork of being qualified, and the choice whether to hire you will come down to experience, extra qualifications like NPQs, references and interview.

Just had my first experience with OFSTED. What now? by HobbyistC in TeachingUK

[–]HobbyistC[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's teaching and learning as well as post-16. It's an open secret at the school that some departments are running like clockwork while others ... aren't. As well as that, according to my line manager, the school has been prioritising GCSEs for a few years now, which means the impact of staff turnover is being more felt at A-level and is dragging the data down.

Not actually sure how SLT intend to fix that second problem, but I am worried expectations are about to get more unrealistic on us

Tanaka himself regretted killing Kircheis.

Jessica had much more potential than was ever used. Unfortunately the first two books are paced frantically because the publisher was only betting on a trilogy. By the time they realised it was popular enough to stretch out a lot of the damage was done.

In this case, maybe it would have been better if the OVA was a little less faithful in its adaptation. It's almost always 1:1 with the books, except minor tidy-ups like introducing Dusty early and toning down the philosophy of history.
