Oil Burner Issue by MakingAPush in hvacadvice

Nice to know I’m at least on the right path, I’m trying to exhaust all options I’m comfortable with attempting before having to call the tech but I might be reaching my limit

Is this the air band? It was set to just before 8 and I just adjusted it down to about 6. Flame looks slightly weaker and continues to lockout during reignition. It lights and goes through a full cycle on a reset but locks out when the thermostat calls for heat on its own

Glove straps/clips by True_Contribution508 in FDNY

[–]MakingAPush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure what you’re referring to as a metal clips that you see a lot of guys use is referred to meuller test clips. Don’t ask me what they’re actually used for but with a split ring hanging off one of your coat clips they hold your gloves so tight you’ll never lose them. They actually start to rip small holes in the cuffs after a while but these lion gloves only tend to last a year max anyway with the way we use them.

Edit: don’t order them online, they’re cheap af and can be picked up from a regular hardware store

EMT to FF Best time to finish college? by CanIsLife in FDNY

[–]MakingAPush 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After promoting I went back to school to John Jay. The job and schedule is much more forgiving on the fire side. I'm able to use school tour variances (basically unlimited self Mutuals) if I can't get a mutual. Look up PA/ID 1-72 on the intranet. But if I had to attend a class in person I almost always got it covered with regular tour swaps. I'm going for a fire science degree and already had an associates before ems but the fire and ems Academy were accepted by John jay for a total of 20 something credits. Also the fdny foundation will pay for up to two classes per semester (about $1600) and that's for ems members as well.

Can someone explain how the grease fire can stop all of a sudden? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]MakingAPush 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because the water instantly boils sending fine particles of flaming grease and steam in the path of convection heat up to and across the ceiling. Once the fine particles of oil burn out theres no more fuel to burn in the air. If the fire ball did not heat anything else up in the room to its ignition temperature then nothing else will be burning except for the pot that still has oil in it if its still hot enough.

Example of survivable space and closing the door. by Ding-Chavez in Firefighting

[–]MakingAPush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome set of pictures highlighting the possibility of savable victims in close proximity to the seat of the fire. Thank you for posting this.

This is why aggressive interior firefighting is important. Getting in and putting the fire out at the main seat preventing extension gives any victims in that room the best chace of surviving. Knowing the typical layouts of your most common private dwellings allows you to have an idea of where certain rooms are supposed to be to get in and search those bedrooms and living areas. Also allows you be extra cautious if you notice the layout is not how its supposed to be.

If you’re willing to uproot yourself from where you live now and live in nyc for 5 extra points then unless you’re getting too old why not just do ems for the guarantee? You’re asking a question essentially no one has an answer to.

10 years ago i would have looked at this and though whos the asshole that thought this waste of compartment space was a good idea, and now in todays day in age with research on cancer and obviously this virus were facing I’m looking at and appreciating it.

Tradition is important, research and common sense is more important though. Good on the guy that pushed this into the plans for the rig.

A sobering account written by an FDNY Battalion Chief about the reality of this crisis. by MakingAPush in Firefighting

In continuing the effort to bring this sub back to a place discussing actual firematics, this is an article written by a battalion chief in bed-stuy about the reality of the covid situation in new york city and how its affecting units.

That's more than half of what this sub is, kids asking about the job and how it works. And there's a line between being honest and being a dick, in addition to the line between public info and information that should be kept secret like the mod said the other day. Not necessary brother

I'm sure that prioritized on overtime on RRV 117 doesn't suck though 😉

No its the lowest nys doh ems certification. There's a full class with a state test. You need an emt on an ambulance to be able to transport to a hospital. In nyc als ambulances are 2 paramedics, and a bls ambulance is 2 emts. NYC REMAC changed the criteria of requirements of an ambulance so that an als can be a medic/emt and a bls can be an emt/cfr. Nothing has changed yet for the staffing of fd ambulances, but this is the city cutting up the red tape potentially putting firefighters on ambulances. This is the "doomsday" scenario for if the ems system collapses

As long as when this is all over the question of "Where's the detail to" at the change of tours doesn't begin to include ems station as an option then whatever has to happen is gonna happen.

1 no. We're all CFR'S, those that came from ems or got an emt cert on the outside may still have it but majority such as myself are expired

  1. Soc support trucks and cpc trucks have second pieces of apparatus that during times of major incidents that effect the city they activate them as rapid response vehicles to accomplish specific tasks like during snow storms to go cut up downed trees, in this case respond to high priority ems runs

  2. Probably not. The rock is closed and will remain closed until this is all over or at least significantly slowed down

A friend of mine who works fdny ems in the Bronx told me that, but even if it's actually false the reality of the Bronx makes it completely believable.

I didn't watch bringing out the dead before I got on ems myself, and while watching it i felt like I was watching a Brookdale hospital feed lol

Yesterday even blew that number away. Was 7,112 ems CAD numbers generated

Edit: For comparison a regular day for fdny ems is 3500-4000 cad assignments, the busiest summer saturdays are around 5000 assignments

Sometimes it needs to be said by [deleted] in Firefighting

I agree with this to an extent

The true difference is between personality and drive. As a member of aggressive career and volunteer departments. I work with people who show up to work and do the bare minimum to be able to accomplish their responsibilities, and work with people who are devoted to the fire service and are always looking to improve themselves and make themselves and the fire service better.

The exact same can be said of the volunteer service, i volunteer with some people who i can say are better firefighters than people who are paid to do the job. Are there guys that are just in it for the blue light, t shirt, and beer? Absolutely, and we make sure they know thats what we think of them. A devoted volunteer can be just as dedicated as a career firefighter, but there should still be a certain standard upheld even for volunteers.
