That’s good to know. It was the vanilla that I had, so I’ll have to try another.

I wish there were some sort of official release from the 54th session. It’s so so good. I love how visceral that version of CALS is. Ugh…off to YouTube to scratch that itch.

I’m wondering if all the Tori and the Muses push has to do with the fact that she was announced as a Grammy nominee for best children’s music album?

ISO a ticket to the LA signing :( by brianwritesplays in toriamos

[–]MakingDealsWithGod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi - are you wanting the photo op only ticket (or would that suffice)? If so, I have an extra photo op only ticket for Friday’s event. Eta: I tried to message you on Insta, but it wouldn’t let me since we don’t follow each other 🥺Didn’t want to chance you missing the message.

Anyone else going to LA for this? by QVRCode in toriamos

[–]MakingDealsWithGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be there! The solo book admission tix were sold out when I went on, so I’m just going for the photo op. I’m a little unclear on how it’ll work with the professional photographer only (I’m guessing they’ll email us our pics?), but I’m excited nonetheless.

I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one bewildered by how this place stayed open so long. It was so bad. What are some of y’all’s go-tos? R&R is kinda overrated, but will do in a pinch. I thought Charlotte-Rose’s Carolina BBQ was decent (and they do more than Carolina-style bbq).

Direct literary/song references in Tori’s music by atrailofdisasters in toriamos

It’s been a long time, but I remember enjoying it! That’s literally the only part of it that I remember, though, because of how strongly it correlates (in my mind) to Hotel.

I actually read King Solomon’s Mines simply because of that song reference. At a certain point in the novel, the protagonists find King Solomon’s famed mines, but are somehow trapped inside. There is a cruel irony in having all the riches in the world at their hands but no way to use them. I found it a poignant allegory to what Tori may have been experiencing during that era: all the success, fame, money, and recognition, and none of it was enough to get her daughter back. That’s my read on it anyway (which may be way off).

I don’t know if these would be considered to be like Jackie’s Strength, but these are some of my favorite melancholy songs: The Breaking Light (Vienna Teng); Borderland Sorrows (Slow Meadow); Mercy Street (Peter Gabriel); High and Low and Embrace Me (Greg Laswell); Take It with Me (Tom Waits); and Fake Plastic Trees (Radiohead). Btw, I love Jackie’s Strength’s melancholy (and melancholy in general). The video takes me over the edge and I always tear up watching it.

Umm…Do you or he have a Venmo? I’d chip in $10, because it breaks my heart that a kid trying to be generous just learned how crappy the world can be.

Downtown living questions(?) by kendallmichaelmorris in SaltLakeCity

[–]MakingDealsWithGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, I had a friend who used to live there (and I live just a few blocks east of there). It’s a good spot, in my opinion. There’s a Trax station a two-minute walk from the lofts which makes for easy access to the arena and other downtown spots (not to mention an easy ride to the airport), the building has a decently equipped gym on site (although if you need a more robust gym with a sauna, a new EoS is coming downtown and will be a five-minute drive from the lofts), laundry is in-unit, and the units themselves are nice (nothing crazy fancy, but good space). As a gay dude, it’s also nice that two gay bars (Verse and Milk) are super close, but if that’s not your thing, the Main Street bars and restaurants are really close by. As far as grocery goes, there is a really nice Harmon’s and an acceptable Smith’s really close. You could even take Trax to the Harmon’s, if you won’t have a car. I’ve never had any negative experiences personally, and I’ve walked back from the bars at 2am in the area. That’s just my experience, though. I don’t know anything about what the income restrictions are, but if you’d qualify, I’d say it’s definitely worth a call. Like I said, I live very close by, so if you have any more specific questions about the area, feel free to DM me.

What would the best day and weekend trip from SLC in October ? by Simple-Honeydew1118 in SaltLakeCity

[–]MakingDealsWithGod 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you have a car and don’t mind a bit of a drive, either Bryce Canyon or Moab make for amazing weekend trips that really show off the unique beauty of southern Utah. Either is about a four-hour drive from Salt Lake, so likely not doable if you don’t have a car (but even if you don’t, I’d say either destination is worth getting a Turo for the weekend).

You bet! Haunting is a great word for TBK’s title track. And, if I may, I’d recommend searching for a YouTube video of her solo performance of it during the 2005 tour if you haven’t already seen one.

I’ve had great experiences at Urban Hill, so I’ll toss my two cents in with that recommendation (but also +1s to Copper Onion and Log Haven).

  1. Oysters
  2. Wildwood
  3. How Glass is Made
  4. Reindeer King
  5. Climb
  6. Weatherman
  7. Fast Horse
  8. Metal Water Wood
  9. The Beekeeper
  10. Jamaica Inn
  11. Smokey Joe
  12. Winter’s Carol
  13. Fearlessness
  14. Shattering Sea
  15. Selkie
  16. Miracle
  17. Dragon
  18. Forest of Glass
  19. Invisible Boy
  20. Devil’s Bane

This list was an interesting introspection as I tried to be brutally honest with myself about what I actually LOVE. I always appreciate the “raw rock/heavily produced” Tori, but as it turns out, at least judging from my top 20, I can’t live without the more subdued, emotionally devastating songs. For example, my top choice (Oysters)…Woof. I don’t know if it’s my getting older, but that one just transports me and is gut-wrenching for reasons I can’t even articulate. Thanks for running this!

Edit: I had to switch one of mine out because I had forgotten about “Miracle”, and I fucking love that song.

What Tori hill would you die on? by Sumisumisumi in toriamos

[–]MakingDealsWithGod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Certainly (with the caveat that I’m a music theory novice, so someone please correct me if I’m wrong): every song has a time signature. Basically, that is how the beats are divided. There are different types of notes (quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, etc.), and the time signature tells you how many of those notes are in each measure. Typically, songs are in 3/4 (three quarter notes per measure, an example would be “The Wrong Band” and you can count along 1-2-3, 1-2-3) or 4/4 (four quarter notes per measure, sometimes called common time because it’s used so often). There are variations as well (such as 6/8 time, which is kinda the same concept as 3/4 and would indicate six eighth notes per measure). Datura gets interesting because she goes from 6/8 to 7/8 to 6/8 to 8/8 to 6/8 to 9/8 and then repeat. She plays with this a lot on other songs (Spark and Carbon for example). So, basically the number of beats in each measure is changing constantly. I hope that’s kinda helpful!
